I'm a big fan of the Steel Legion Models.
I just don't know how they fight in combat.
I know they've got their armoured companies and stuff, but that's it.

Not sure what it is you want to know..

Is it how they fight in fluff, or on the tabletop.

But basically they use a mechanized infantry doctrine, everyone is mounted in a transport with some armored support, and use blitzkreig style tactics in fluff.

Tabletop well its simular based on how many points the battle is, the main crux is its a armored infantry force, I played one for many years and enjoyed it alot, almost as much as I enjoyed my airmobile force

Their guardsmen truck around in chimeras. The Steel Legion dates from a time when the Imperial guard codex had armoured fist squads, infantry platoons fighting from chimeras iirc. The Steel Legion were the masters of that.

Seeing as you can now give any line infantry squad in a platoon a chimera, you can replicate a Steel Legion army really easily.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

They're Space Germans with Russia's manufacturing capabilities. Every man and their dog has a Chimera.

They're the high speed anti ork shock troops.

Think of something clever to say.

Though interestingly enough they're more or less being forced to fight a defensive campaign by the Orks, who have the initiative and are denying them the ability to use their true strengths. Same dilemma the Germans faced on the Eastern Front after Kursk.

They're mechanized infantry for the most part.

A few fluff notes:

-Armageddon is an ash waste with corrosive atmosphere, the steel legion list originally required all vehicles to have armored/closed tops, meaning basilisks, no scout sentinels, etc.

-sentinels were anti-tank light vehicles, lascannons are typical armament for them

-there were also conscript gangers, which were suggested to be represented by necromunda ganger models. Depending on how you wanted them to function, these could be veterans, conscripts, guardsmen, or convicts

-yarrick is, of course, a key figure

-you could also use any of the death korps lists to represent them, though unlike the death korps, they don't use mining or cavalry

-armageddon ork hunters used modified catachan rules, though normally they work as their own army, not attached.

-the FW large transports, esp. the crassus (sp?) would probably be appropriate, too

-elysians were also first introduced in Armageddon, so they'd make sense as allies or if you wanted an excuse for flyers.

edit: they weren't originally recognized as related to armored companies: they were known for mecahnized companies (all chimeras-based)

Steel Legion are noted for two things: lascannon Sentinels and Chimera infantry squads. Most of the fluff about them is from the era of the old IG Codex, though, and back then their fundamental strategy emphasized mobility; I think most Armageddon colonels would be very happy to use Valkyries or Vendettas too.
