Don't forget - like any organic material though, it's imperative to thoroughly seal it both before priming and after painting, so it doesn't break down or become moldy/rotten.

I was going to ask about this. Sealing prevents it from biodegrading?

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

That's just nuts

A rather interesting use for a natural material. And sealing it will prevent things getting into the coconut - even bacteria will need oxygen/carbon dioxide/etc in order to respire. By sealing the natural material you can help prevent the transfer of these gases and so stop the bacteria from functioning.

Never heard of anaerobic bacteria/viruses then? They are what cause root decay in your teeth and junk.

Sure I have, however, they still require some form of exchange to function. "Anaerobic" simply means "living without air".

They do need an exchange, but it's possible for them to live in a contained environment. Some breeds do better in it. I point to the root decay example again. There may also be anaerobic and aerobic things living off each other, on the microbiological scale there could be symbiotic relationships like that. Couldn't name an example due to that not being my field though.

My argument is that you'll never stop the decay of anything, organic or not due to the nature of atrophy. Sped up by organic, chemical or physical means, it'll still happen. Sealing it will help stop the decay, maybe it'll last longer than your life time. You could also try irrigating it in disinfectant to try and kill everything first. If it doesn't? It's a bit of coconut, elbow grease and time.

An anaerobic organism or anaerobe is any organism that does not require oxygen for growth.

OT: I like this idea very much, if only I had easy access to coconuts

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaerobic_organism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaerobic

"Anaerobic is a word coming from the Greek word "αναερόβιος" (comprising from the words αν=without, αέρας=air and βίος=life) which literally means living without air, as opposed to aerobic."

They may not use oxygen but they still need gas and ion exchange (which can be blocked or significantly slowed by sealing the biological material). Trust me, just because they don't need oxygen doesn't mean they can exist in a vacuum (no pun intended). Additionally, the products of anaerobic digestion tend to include carbon dioxide – if this builds up it leads to a change in pH (as carbon dioxide is acidic), which kills off the bacteria, sterilising the sealed environment.

Thus my theory of symbiotic bacteria.

Can we agree that sealing it will help decrease decay, but it will eventually decay regardless?

I'd like to point out that most of the wood that you'll get, i.e. in stores and such are already treated in some form or another to preven- I mean, DELAY (Ahem, looking at all you Nurgle people ) decay. I'd think that fresh coconut husk is akin to fresh wood - eventually it's going to start decaying. From experience, wooden tools that I've carved while in the jungle eventually shrivel and turn black with decay about a month or so after.

Nevertheless, this has got to be one of the most creative uses of left-overs ever. Have you done anything with the hairs outside the husk yet that you bagged?
