Hi dakka,

I was looking for some opinions on what I should collect next after picking up a SM megaforce. I'm debating getting a second megaforce just to have the metric ton of marines and then the extra vehicles, but i am not certain.

I was thinking maybe a devastator squad and some assault terminators for some extra punch.

I have SW and GK marine armies but I've never collected a space marine one. What sets the vanilla space marine codex apart from the other marine codices?

I'm doing the whole army painter method. I've done it before and it doesn't take that long to get some nice looking stuff out on the board.

Depends on what you like.

Couple more squads of marines would help.

Some fast attack, depends on how deep your pockets and preference. May I suggest 3 skimmers with magnets top and bottom and have 2 Hvy bolters per skimmer? Attack bikes are expensive money-wise but 3 with Hvy bolters work very nice and if you get skimmers with them switch to Melta/Hvy flamer.

Same with Whirlwind, Vindicator, Predator.

Sternguard have some flexibility and send them off in the drop pod.

Finally TH/SS termies riding in the landraider and big pockets again, get a Razerback for the command squad. (can hack up twin linked heavy bolters for skimmers and use the TL lascannon and magnet one side for TL plasgun)

There are many overlapping options but I think I listed them in order of what I would do if I started over.

I'd definitely advise getting some Land Speeders at this point; one thing vanilla Space Marines do very well is White Scars-esque biker/Land Speeder armies, so that's definitely a direction to explore, otherwise find some additional firepower. Devastators, Terminators, some bigger, heavier units to back your core of basic people.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

If you really want to directly move on I would consider a box of Termis of your favorite flavor (it does not really matter that much anymore. Tacticals work well if you deepstrike them and you can shift them around with a Libby with GoI to get always the optimal shooting position and Assault Termis work best in a Land Raider so you can avoid the one turn of doing nothing and being shot. A Chaplain or a Nullzone-Libby will buff those greatly.) and /or a fast vehicle of some sort (There is quite a big discussion on how effective the Storm Talon is in comparison to the old dependable Land Speeder. Both can pull of some nice tricks.)

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

A dev box would be good, to give you more options then just MLs.

Assault terminators. You have a LR, might as well fill it up.

Something from the FA slot. I'm a big fan of balanced armies, with something from each slot. The megaforce lacks this. I'd grab a pair of speeders. Another good option would be a 5 man jump squad and a chaplain.

I clicked on this thread to suggest that very thing.

Devastators, assault termies, and landspeeders just like the above said. (and maybe a second rhino)

It really depends on what you want your list to look like. I don't use Scouts and I like tanks, dreadnoughts, and Sternguard, so obviously my suggestion would be to pick up some Sternguard or more tactical squads to convert into Sternguard, and some heavy support tanks.

IMO the Megaforce gives a solid foundation, but you usually won't use all of the pieces in a single army unless you're playing a fluffy/versatile list in large point games. There are no bad units in the Megaforce, but IMO here are the USEFUL ones:

20 Tactical Marines
5 Sniper Scouts
1 Rhino chassis
1 Drop Pod

So personally, I would recommend getting a Librarian HQ, some more transports if you want them, bet they Rhinos or Drop Pods, and then start working on the Elites and Heavy Support you want.

I was going to suggest back to work to ask for some extra shifts.

Though I'd be all over the Vampire Counts box if my fiancee wasn't already getting me an ipad for Christmas.

On top of all of the above suggestions, here is my take:

You will want to have the option of dealing with flyers. Even if your opponent does not have flyers, this setup will induce lots of rage.

Get Telion and buy cloaks for 3 sniper scouts 1 ML scout. Also buy Aegis Defense Line with Quad Gun.

For 250 points you get a Scout sarge with BS6, and the entire squad has a 2+ cover save. Also, when Telion mans the Quad Gun, he gets to make 4 autocannon shots which he gets to reroll hits TWICE, because of his BS6 and twin-linked nature of Quad Guns. Also intercepts any deep-striking units in range. Stick them at an objective point and they will be harder to kill than regular Terminators.

Assault marines are the bee's knees if you want to have fun with MEQ. unfortunately they have about as much Survivability as a cultist with a chaos sigil on his face in front of a commissar (not very much survivability). But hell if you aren't playing competitively you can have some good laughs with them.

False. No dice can be rerolled twice. BS6 and BS 5 Twinlinked are the same.

Nah BS 6 is actually a lot worse as the reroll only hit on 6.

The twinlinked takes over as per the rules for BS6+ meaning you hit on a 2+ with rerolls if you have BS 5+ at the Quad Gun.
