Does anyone else write out rosters such as I do? I feel it brings another level on connection to ones army.

I did that for my Black Templars, I had names for every marine and tank. However the word document is on my parents computer, so I'd have to go and fetch that before posting.
I'm also writing up something similar for my Eldar Craftworld. I probably won't go and name every guardian, avenger and fire dragon though.

Isn't that something they joked about in the comic Crtl+Alt+Del?

Try do that with an army of IG-conscripts, and for spice and fun paint them in the colors and such as Manchester United (secret dream of mine then sending them up against a horde of diverse Tyranids or Dark Eldar).

Is there even a point to naming Imperial Guardsmen? I mean most of them won't even survive the first battle they get into! For me, a guardsman/unit would have to accomplish some miracle, and prove the God-Empire is with him to have the honour of recieving a name. Like, a single guardsman fighting off a greater enemy where there's a 99% chance of dying. That guy...would get a name.

He has a name. His name is Bob.

Id love to see this done for nids. Joe the hormagant, Frank the hormagaunt and so on and so on

Actually, they all have a name. It is the same name. Nom Nom. Though in all seriousness, it is sadly impossible to make a naming convention for the Tyranids. As they have a hive mind, the individual and in part, their name, do not exist because the hive mind has no need to give it's tools names. All the names given to special Tyranids have come from the forces that have faced them.

I came to find all my names after 15 battles with my brother. Anyone who survived a good deal got a name.

Especially Brother Seargent Kristo and Andromedes. They took down around 20 fire warriors together. Andromedes died and Kristo survived so Andy became a Dread and I kept Kristo. Even in games I always leave his squad one man short out of respect.

I only name the sergeants; I'm honestly not very good at naming people...

Interceptor Justicar Uriel Kars, Brother-Sergeant Corbin's plasma-gun Ravenwing squad, and Striking Scorpion Exarch Jheran are probably the most noteable for significant cases of doing things you wouldn't expect of them (Jheran's beaten a Space Marine Captain in a challenge, for one).

I name mine down to Sergeants. When I get into individual guardsmen my traditional post-turn reading of the casualty lists becomes time-prohibitive.

I have names for every one of my independent characters, but this makes me think maybe I should name my nobz as well. here's just a smattering of some of my characters:

Reminds me of when I was young and my grandfather used to impress me by recalling the names of his sheep (he had hundreds), took me a few years to realise he was full of gak and made the names up as he went along.

So how do you remember which standard marine is Jez and which is Eric?

ICs and the truly awesome ones like Brother Barugh. Wielding the 5th squad's MM (Full Sallie company so yes I numbered the squads) he stepped out of a drop pod to snap fire a Necron Lord dead. When he got back up as necrons are wont to do and assaulted the unit Barugh snap fired him dead a second time.

I have all the bases marked with their names on the sides. When one dies, I paint over it in black and rename him. All of my Squad leaders are haggard war veterans with at least 10 battles under their belts.

I remember I had Big Boss Big-Beatz for my metal themed Ork army

I tend to track character histories from Sargeant upwards, although lowly marines get marked for promotion to seargent if they do something cool. For example, my current commander was originally just an assault marine until he killed a Chaos Lord a few years back. Then he was promoted to sargeant upon the death of the current assault marine sargeant. After having wiped numerous enemies off the map with his thunder hammer, including most notable a land raider he was promoted to commander, forgoing his jump pack for a command squad.

I find that method to just be a nice way of adding a little character to armies and such.

now that I've had some time to write it out I've named each of my units, and each army has a theme to their names, anyone want to guess them:

Only to an extent - I have Death Korp of Krieg and they don't have names unless they're rather notable members of the Korp - gets a bit dull writing out serial numbers for each one.

For my Orks:

Beyond that, the Nobz don't usually get names and any boy is named by making some sound, usually coming from the back of the throat.

For my Necrons (which are actually Orkrons):

I pick a random number, convert it to base 2, and end up with Warrior 10111001.

Every guardsmen get his/her (who knows under the coats and masks!) squad number on one of the shoulder plate, in the case of regular guardsmen, they get their platoon number on their left shoulder plate and their squad number within the platoon on the right one. Then everyone gets a number in their squad (so from 1 to 10) and the usual 56 (5th regiment, 6th company), then their platoon number of it applies, then the squad number (56-93-4 = Grenadier #4 from the 93th squad).

When I collected Tanith First-and-Only, I named every mini after a character from the books.
