Taken this from my blog www.imperiusdominatus.com

I've recently finished my Daemon army, so I thought I would share with you how to make corrupted bases. It is very simple and effective, even hobby newbies can do this.

1. Get yourself some PVA glue. I used the below, though this exact stuff isn't required; I got this for free from my Dad as he works in the building trade.

2. Get some superglue. This is only cheap stuff and costs a bank busting £1 from a local discount shop. Depending how many bases you have and how much corrupted effect you want will greatly depend how much you use. My Daemon army has 61 based models and I used only half a tube of superglue, though majority of these were normal 25mm bases and I only had four 40mm bases.

3. Spread your PVA glue onto the base using an old paint brush. I tend to pour an amount into a lid so I can just scoop it out with the paint brush. Don't be shy with the pva too, the more you put on and more generous you are the greater the effect will be!

As soon as you have put the PVA glue on the base and you're happy with the amount, drop on the superglue. You can drop bits of it on areas or tilt the base around so the superglue runs over the surface.

Drying time is about 4-5 hours. Once dry you will get the below effect; the dried superglue has made weird patterns and interesting shapes in the PVA.

* Remember to wash out the paint brush with water or else it will turn solid and no more brush use for you!

4. You will need to give the base a wash of your chosen colour. Don't paint it as it will lose the tiny detail it has, a wash will keep this. I've given mine two coats of heavy wash.

Then you will just need to add detail such as flock, sand, rocks etc. This will create the look that the ground is corrupted in areas where the Daemon walks!

Here's various finished results:

The first picture is using blue wash. Second picture black wash followed by red and the last picture a red wash.

It took me about a day over all to get these bases done, most the time I am waiting for the glue and wash to dry before moving onto the next step. The gluing took about an hour while the wash took about 45 minutes.

These bases not only look good for Daemons but will look ace for Tyranids too!

Hope this guide comes in handy for you. Post your weird base creations!

Better pix, plox.

I know this causes a rather nice effect, but others might not. Please take bigger pictures so others can see the result.

Yeah. I agree with the better pics vote. I use this effect as well. Some of the demons on the last page of my blog have the same technique used. I was wondering if spray paint over wet PVA would accomplish the same thing.

I can make the pics bigger. It's just how I linked them.

I am not sure if wet paint would do it, see superglue tighens when it dries and I am not sure if paint does that. Worth a try!

Simple Effective Basing!! A Tyranid Army would look good with that kind of basing.

Would look ace for Tyranids, perhaps red and blue maybe?

I like this, need to give it a shot sometime to make my Daemon bases similar yet distinct enough through the army to not be boring.

you can also skip the glue , and use acrylic paint instead . it gives a different texture . i was useing it for scabs and open wounds 20 years ago when i played 1st ed chaos , and for tyranid bases when they first came out in white dwarf .

It is something different put it this way.

Wouldn't it crack? How'd you get the paint go like that? Is it because it's thick?

the effect varies based on what paint you use (thicker craft painst vs thiner GW paints ) it also varies (in paint and PVA glue ) based on if you use super glue , super thin super glue , or super thick super glue .

Yep, fix the pictures.

The process is actually some pretty neat and simple chemistry. The way PVA cures is by releasing liquid. It really does actually just dry out. Cyanoacrylate (Superglue) is the opposite. In order for it to cure, it accepts water molecules to cure. That's why super glue seemingly cures INSTANTLY when it touches your skin, your skin releases moisture. The superglue sucks the water out of the PVA. Ok, chemistry lesson over...

I've been using this for quite a while (Nids)

Something else you Chaos guys can do is drop a little drop of PVA on your mini (skin or whatever), and touch it with the superglue, and have an open sore looking mark on the actual miniature. Also applicable to vehicles, of course.

Also, I usually use Loctite Super Control Gel for assembly, and when you use gel instead of liquid for this, it keeps the process inside the line of the gel that you lay down. Useful incase you've got a specific idea going.

Keep spreading the knowledge. This is a super useful technique.

You can't really "necro" threads in the tutorial section. Seeing as they are still useful and what not.

Definitely a good tut. Gives me Ideas for my bases and maybe the whole gaming table I was thinking about.

Fair enough, didn't think about it from a tutorial-utility standpoint

You pose a valid point... XD

Something I might add: I later mixed some ink into the PVA glue for some built-in color. Try that on for size (a few drops of green, 1 drop red, a drop of black for some bog looking booger green color lol). Of course, you'll have to meddle with the amounts, and be cautious not to thin the PVA too much, else destroy the effect with the cyanoacrylate.

And if you don't know, then I'll tell you: Be careful with your model after this point. The PVA on the base is super-brittle, and doesn't take much to pop off and shatter. I sealed mine down with some clear polyurethane and it's no-longer an issue (even for all the travel they endure without a proper case).

This looks really interesting. I have some 'Nids that I am going to be re-doing. I will certainly keep this in mind for their bases.

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

My first thoughts are that: (apart from awesomeness!)

- that you could airbrush over with the ghost tints for some nice effects

- Drop droplets of wash into the PVA as you go to add some depth to the colour? so like a light blue and a pink, you could then swirl them a little and drop super glue anyone tried this?
