So Mantic seems to be filling in alot of gaps in GWs lineup where they no longer support the product. Dreadball for Bloodbowl is the obvious example. I'm all for this. I never got to play Necromunda because when it was in production I was a teenager and never really had the money. I know you can buy the stuff still on eBay but it seems silly since GW doesn't support it. I guess my question is, does anyone have any clue what Mantic's next project is, and if they could pull something like this off? I don't know if the world of Warpath really translates into a Necromunda style game, but they could just make a completely different "world" if you will. Anyone else think this would be awesome? Any ideas if this is up in the air for them or am I just doing a lot of wishful thinking?

I don't see the point. A game doesn't need active support and/or new releases to still be fully playable to be honest. The necromunda rules are available for free, there are plenty of resources to be found for it on the web (see yakromunda.com) and you can easily convert a gang or just use another companys models.
Could Mantic instead do something even remotely original with their potential? No? Okay.

It doesn't need it, but it sure as heck makes it alot more fun. You can only play the same few scenarios or what have you I would think before it gets boring. And while they aren't the most original company in the world I have no problem with them filling in the gaps where existing companies have slacked off. Wasn't trying to get into the whole is mantic an originial company debate, more of trying to see if anyone knew what was next on the horizon for them and if something like this might be on the table.

Well, I suppose it's not impossible. I don't know if they are going to release more games so soon, certainly a lot of resources goes into creating a new game.

There's a thread on the Mantic forums where alternative in-universe sports to Dreadball were considered. One of the ideas put forward was a paintball/lasergun style combat game, I reasoned that this could easily become Mantic's version of Necromunda - individuals rather than squads, but the same basic rules, and with XP etc thrown in .

I liked the idea because it didn't go down the 'gangs' route, or the similar post-Apoc setting.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

Hmmm... thats an interesting idea. The only thing I wouldn't like about that is if you have a campaign going there would be no way to "lose" a player. As in you can't die playing laser tag and in campaigns I feel like there needs to be consequences if you play poorly or whatever. Its a neat idea though.

Why not? Dreadball is a hyperviolent sport with common deaths, whose to say that a futuristic version of laser tag won't be using real lasers? Coaches have the option to resurrect dead players in DB, so you could move a similar concept across.

I've been looking at infinity. My only problem with it is I hate/ am not good at working with metal minis. I still might make the jump. Guess I need to learn sometime. I thought about getting the rulebook and just playing a few games with my 40k models to see if I like it.

I'm not sure it's mantic's style to do a game like Necromunda. Necro needs more multipart models than Mantic usually makes, yet the game also requires far less miniatures than Mantic's business plan seems based on.

For Mantic's bottom line, the beauty of Grim Cargo or Dwarf Kings hold is that they use minis that Mantic already makes, so they're not investing for new models for a small-model-count game.

Dreadball is a fairly small model count game, but the figures don't have to be fancy multipart models.

I'd love to see a necro-path game from Mantic, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

If Necro isn't your thing, I'll plug one of my favorite fast-play skirmish/campaign games. Free Here:

In The Emperor's Name. Based in the 40k universe (nothing in common with 40k mechanics though), but allows for stating of one's own units so it can be entirely generic. Cool basic scenario/campaign system toi.

It'd be easy enough to just limit the available weapons and do weapon packs though. That allows people to mod the figures to how they want. I'd probably be in for this on a kickstarter.

You will probably find it very straight-forward. The key is to remember that each miniature in Infinity is essentially a character piece, with even the basic grunts having as much detail (and more finely sculpted) than even a character/HQ from something like 40k or Warmachine. You won't have to make or paint more than a dozen of them, so you can really go to town on making a good job of painting them! I'm not a particularly good painter by any means, but the minis forced me to become better, with the end result some of my other non-Infinity stuff has also improved as a result.

Playing with 40k minis is a great idea though, and something a lot of people do to see if they like the game. Just download the 'starter rules' off the website, and set up 4-5 guys a side and go from there. You'll have a blast!

Agree completely, I don't think its in Mantic's mission plan to make this kind of game yet. The only thing that might happen is if they keep expanding on Warpath 2.0 (which is more of a skirmish game), make the rules more detailed so you end up with a smaller alternative version of what will be the main Warpath game.

@pacific, I didn't know you can download the rules. I have just seen the HC rulebook but I'll go check it out.

Back on topic, I guess you guys are probably right that this might not be mantic's thing. May have been some wishful thinking on my part, but I wouldn't put it past them either. They have done a pretty good job at filling some of GWs holes. I guess we'll just have to wait and see whats next (even though I think a warpath kickstarter is next.)

Ronnie definitely 100% wants to make a sci-fi skirmish game, and this is something he's talked about a few times, but it's far ahead in the future at this point in their plans.

Mass battles come first. Maybe if the Warpath kickstarter gets an insane level of funding it might get an early skirmish expansion, too!

Some time Q2 next year is the most likely estimate at this point.

Not much anymore.

At the time, it was something new (because 40k didn't even have that much terrain yet - all the terrain sets GW did utilised parts that came from the Necro sets.

If we'd (in the west) had the likes of the Robogear stuff (Hexagon mainly) back in the late 80s, then it would have been a lot different.

I was considering what might be on offer once Dreadball Extreme comes around. Given the background given there could be scope for some form of limited urban terrain that forms the basis of the pitch/

That aside there seems little to justify Mantic going to an urban, gang style skirmish. A complete boxed, high detail, hard sci fi skirmish set could happen, but given the expected Warpath KS it could be a long way off yet.

Want urban terrain check ebay for Robogear or Pegasus Hobbies Hexagon if you can get a set of all available you will have more than enough for Necromunda

Sounds a bit like wishful thinking, do you have any evidence to support this? I've not seen anything that suggests that this could happen.

So far Mantic has apparently confirmed a definite future for Warpath 2.0 (skirmish) and a probable future for a version of the original mass-battle warpath. Neither Warpath 1.0 or 2.0 is remotely similar to a "hard-sci-fi" skirmish ruleset. They are both Soft-sci-fi rulesets with many similarities to 40k. (note that I like Warpath and don't consider this a negative)

If you are hoping for a hard-sci-fi ruleset, you're much better off picking up Tomorrow's War or Stargrunt 2.

Could see that being pretty popular if they did, and certainly from the stuff out there are already you can imagine it being quite cheap (some kind of building kit for 1/4 the price of GW stuff perhaps?)

GF9/Battlefront's "Battlefield in a Box" has already set the bar pretty high with surprisingly good quality terrain for the low price. I'd love to see what Mantic could come up with in the same vein.

Having just played a game of Dreadball last night, I think a skirmish-based game using Dreadball style of character interactions would work very well. I'd buy into it immediately. Jake made a solid game there, and I think his game engine could very easily be incorporated into a skirmish game. After all, Dreadball is already a skirmish game, as models can interact together, but all of them are technically independent of each other. There are already a bunch of races, and it wouldn't even be hard to create a fan-made skirmish game and send the idea in to Mantic. Who knows, it could work. Probably couldn't make [much/any] money off it, as it's their universe and uses their engine, but it could open up job possibilities in the future with them...who knows?

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
