So I don't normally complain about new editions, 6th 40k nerfed my kan wall before I finished it or got to game with it, so what, I will still try and have fun with it when done.

But why oh why have hasbro messed with a classic, I mean who fecks with a board game? Monopoly hasn't changed and cluedo is still the same so why Risk?

So this is the version of the game I grew up with, the Parker edition.

My old man had a slightly older version that I learnt to play on, but they were the same game.

Six players
Three attack dice
Two defending dice
Territory cards with the playing pieces on for reinforments
Mission cards

This is the new Hasbro edition

Five players
No missions
Reinforcements are different as far as I can tell.

So my problem...

I have organised a game of risk for my buddies who are coming back home from the four corners of the uk for Christmas. They aren't really into war games but we all love risk. Booze, smoke, naked women (well two out of three) and a long night of rolling dice and screwing each other over, should be fun

But my copy is showing signs of to many years of abuse, I have lost so many pieces that its more like Risk lite. So I suggested to my mother in law that she gets me a new copy for Christmas.

But it needs to be six players, I don't want to battle on cybertron, middle earth, the moon or the London Underground. I don't want mechs, clone troopers or mole people fighting each other.

I want the classic Parker version, or at least a version that can be played like the classic Parker version if you ignore all the "look at all my new added content, buy me" crap.

So what would you recommend and how does it differ from my version?

This is actually a really good idea, if you ever need a new board you can always switch that out too.

I die alittle bit inside whenever people talk about playing boardgames and Risk, Monopoly and Clue are what they consider playing. There are so many great boardgames out there... Risk is not one of them.

I wouldn't consider them bad per say, Monopoly set me on the road of learning how to trade well after all. However, regarding risk I had been wanting to play it forever, but nobody had the board. Well, friend shows up one day with it and we play, man was I disappointed.

Anyways, yeah I'm with the other poster about just replacing the pieces. I imagine it would be cheaper to just make or find replacements for them instead of getting a new board which you will most likely hate.

Also...i still want to try risk 2210

I have a star wars one that can be played with the SW rules (Clone Wars) or the original Rules. 2+ players.
Then another version that is a minimum of 3 players and other weird rules. Capitals, factories, set mission goals, etc. X sided die, I think its a 10 sided.

I think they were moving towards that 2nd version, with the capitals, factories, etc. It was adding tactics and stuff to the game to make it less about just rolling dice.

Cybertron Risk? Maybe if it was War for Cybertron style instead of Bayformers style ... Tempting but nah. Risk is just too lame.

Sorry but to my knowledge Risk has been exclusively 2-4 or 2/3-5 for over a decade now. The last 2-6 version I can think of is the 1999 40th Anniversary Edition ... except for this past year's Starcraft edition.

Risk 2210 or whatever is a lot of fun. It has all the original stuff, plus you get points that you can use to buy action cards, commanders, and bases.
The cards let you do all kinds of cool stuff - pop reinforcements when one of your weaker areas get attacked, do orbital strikes do kill off some enemies, and so on.
The commanders roll a d8 instead of a d6 when defending, and when they attack into their element - sea commanders when attacking into the undersea colonies, space commanders when you are on the moon, nuke commanders whenever. It's awesome.

I second the Risk 2210. That game is a ton of fun.

THIS! Its risk in campaign form, so a game you played affects the next one cause you change stuff. By change stuff I mean, add new rules to the rulebook, change borders by drawing on board, rip up cards, add new cards. Its really, really, fun. Almost like building a go cart and going down a hill that is way too steep, and your speed exceeds the go carts limitations...

But in the Emergency ward you say "That was AWESOME!!!" The go cart is destroyed but you have a memorable experience.

Monopoly HAS changed. It now includes a "speed die" to help make the game faster and many versions include credit cards and an electronic banking unit instead of cash.

Also, Cluedo's modern version, Discover the Secrets, is a changed version which has been criticized for destroying the quaintness and charm of the original. For example, Professor Plum is now Victor Plum, billionaire video game designer, and the lead pipe is now a baseball bat. The Library is now a living room and the cellar is now a pool(where all accusations must take place instead of the room where you're accusing someone). Also, there's new "Intrigue" cards(one of which "kills" a player and removes them from the game).

Huh; I had never heard of secret missions in Risk, and had to look them up. Turns out European versions always had them, but here in the US they were only added in 1993, which is after I stopped playing it.

I agree with previous comments that Risk 2210 is really good and fun, but it's a VERY different game.

I agree with the other comments that your best bet is to buy a new set, and use the pieces with your old rules to play the way you want to play.

Ugh, I hate 2210. I have a bunch of friends who love it, but I have no use for it. I have the '93 version of RISK with secret mission cards, played it with my roomie and his brother a couple weeks ago, it was a ton of fun. Regular RISK is still the best. Damn the fancy new rules, the '93 edition was the first edition I was old enough to play and understand (I was 8), and it's the classic edition to me. I have SW and LotR RISK, but the original is still better. Screw the gimmicks.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I know its different from the original, but the 2210 version is awesome. When i was in the military, i was on a ship for a while, I had my mother send it too me. It took forever to get it in the mail, as our mail was always chasing us around, but man was it fun. We had so many games where people would talk so much crap it was rediculous. Probably my favorite board game ever.

From what i've heard Legacy can be great if you're already a fan of Risk, but if you don't like the basic game, it's not all that different.

For new years I hung out with some buddies and we did a little board gamin'. Anyways, one of the guys had this board game called supremecy. If you like risk I highly recommend playing this game. It's work sa little like risk in that you have units moving about the map of the world, except there's also a global economy on minerals, grain, and oil. Your starting area get's 6 companies that produce 3/2 of each resource every turn. Keeping the companies running costs money per turn, as does keeping your troops around. You can also sell these resources to the global market. As you sell things, the price goes down. As you buy them, the price goes up. Anyways, you use the stuff you generate in different ways. Grain is used when moving troops on the ground, oil is use for dropping units into any part of the map via air strike. I also believe it's used to move your navy units. Minerals are used to research nukes and orbital satellites. Nukes do what you expect them to do. If you launch one and it hits, the area is decimated and cannot generate resources anymore, nor can you move through it. Orbital satellites, or L-stars are used to shoot down nukes and each other. If 12 nukes land on soil, the game go into nuclear winter and it's over.

There's a little bit of dice rolling, but it's like they took risk, and mixed it with monopoly, and made it quite a bit more complex. I totally recommend you guys check it out.

You can probably continue to find old versions of risk out there pretty cheap. I have one from the mid 90s.

It is a great gateway game for players new to table top strategy games imho.

Thanks guys sorry for the late reply I thought the mods had deleted this topic for some reason, but turns out they had just moved it. Surprised by the level of risk hate on here but at least some seem to like it.

We had an awesome night, ended up borrowing my old mans copy in the end because who can trust the Christmas post or mother in laws not to feck it up. Found plenty of copies dirt cheap on eBay so going to grab some spares from there. I might check out legacy or 2210 as well but my risk crowed aren't big in to change, old before their time.

Supremecy sounds awesome Necroshea gonna trawl eBay right now see if I can find a copy.

anyway

Seriously though, why? Are board games selling so badly that they have to keep adding all these gimmicks to make them more "fun"

@Bang

It totally is. I also forgot there are tanks in the box (we didn't use them) that function as a sort of expansion to the rules. Battles go from straight forward unit numbers to fire power ratings. Troops being one and tanks being 5 I believe.

Shiny new versions with new twists means it's a different game than that old box that's been sitting in the parent's closet for decades. Board games aren't quite heirlooms, and are relatively common gifts for kids of a certain age as they're 'safe' and easy.

My family had a Monopoly set that might've been a collector's item if it was in better shape. Big giant box, much older look than the current editions, metal pawns, etc. Perfectly good (although purists might complaint hat there were probably a few bills missing... is Monopoly technically limited to the currency that is in the box?) but nowhere near as flashy as modern sets.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Man, my copy of Risk still has the wooden cubes in it.. you kids today don't know how good you have it with the fancy plastic horses and cannons....

Or.. something like that.

I enjoyed "Classic" Risk to the point where I was thrilled to find an original edition at a yard sale (the wooden cube version).. and just don't understand the need to make the older versions relevant for today.

I have an 11 year old daughter who we play "old school" Monopoly with around the kitchen table. She went over to a friends house over the Christmas break, and they had a newer Monopoly set with electronic banking and credit cards. She played, but vented to me at home later about how "unreal" that version was.. (I teared up).

I saw that in a store, next to a "first to £1m" Set for monopoly *(Although Poleconomy is a really fun alternate to monopoly)

risk is a good strategy game but the fact there is no differentiation between each force makes it 1 dimensional
Thats what sets games like Twilight Imperium ahead it , as well adding in actual politics
