I'm simply proposing that certain weapons on vehicles should be allowed to overwatch fire into a unit assaulting it. These weapons would be designated as "Defensive." Weapons like:

Pintle-mounted Storm Bolters, Heavy Stubbers, Shuriken Catapults and Cannons, Big Shootas, etc.

So the entry would read:

Gun, Str 4, AP 6, Heavy 3, Pintle-mounted, Defensive

No points would need to be addedto the already considerable cost for this additions anyway. I don't think it is OP in any way. And it stands to reason that the crew of a veicle engaging charging infantry in the open with the small arms mounts... sounds cinematic to me.

I like the idea.

For example, FoW allows vehicle MGs to be fired in defensive fire vs. attacking infantry. I don't have my rulebook on hand, but I believe that the vehicle takes a -1 to it's armour stat to represent exposed crew/open hatches if the player elects to use pintle mounted MGs.

It would make assaulting vehicles a bit more interesting than closing hatches, turning off engine and sitting there awaiting powerfists

Thanks for the reply. That last bit made me chuckle as that more than perfectly describes the current state of infantry assaulting vehicles. Well said!

Perhaps for only pintle mounted weapons?

I could definitely see it for pintle-mounted weapons... except for the pintle-mounted MM on the LR Crusader variant. Pintle-mounteds, bolt-ons, and I'd like to see the other races benefit from the rule as well.

I think the inherent benefit of having a defensive pintle-mounted weapon is the 360' arc of fire versus, say, the shuriken catapults on the Eldar falcon, for example.

Thanks for the reply, Necrosis!

sponson weapons should be able to overwatch too. However, the weapon must be able to target the unit charging. Therefore you could very often avoid one sponson. HFlamer sponsons might actually be useful on ord LR variants then.

Sponson firing would make units of russes deadly. I wouldn't want to have to charge into the 6 heavy flamer wall of death.

Then dont charge the front.... Sponsons only have a 180 degree field of view. Charging the side would mean 1-3 heavy flamers. Also, they are paying for the sponsons and are not gaining any AT resistance from shooting. They are serving exactly the purpose they are meant to in fluff.

LRRs would be broken then. You could only decide to charge side armor (as if you could choose that easily...) to only get 1 flamestorm cannon and not 2.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

LRRs are unused as is. Have you EVER seen one run? in ~200 games over 5 or 6 years i have seen one run in a friendly game. Im not seeing how this makes them broken.

This addresses the symptom of an unecissarily restrictive game turn.

Why not simply use a more interactive game turn and fix far more symptoms?

I like the idea.

It would certainly make sense for Walkers.

All vehicles should be able to fire flame / rapid fire weapon as overwatch
Ever wondered why infantry isn't running blindly towards a tank in real life ? that's because machineguns are deadly ...

And yes, assaulting a 3-LR unit with full flamers seem deadly, but then you're assaulting 510 pts (at least) of tanks kinda specialized in close quarters fighting

I think the rules should mostly stay the same for overwatch and vehicles (i.e Walkers only) but for open topped transports I think it would make sense if a unit embarked can fire their weapons in overwatch, since you can fire in the shooting phase from any point it seems unrealistic that they wouldn't do this when getting charged. But game-play wise I would restrict it to one model gets to fire their weapon in overwatch, as it would make a transport full of flamers almost nonchargeable because of wall of death.

embarked units can already fire overwatch.

open topped all units inside can fire overwatch.

being an ork player i enjoy this a lot

you can fire overwatch out of fire points so rhinos and such would only get a few shots but they still get some.

My command squads unload with a heavy flamer, 3 flamers, and a few bolt pistol shots. Having the chimera also unload isn't really needed.
