It appears that I'm addicted to plastic crack. In the last couple of months, I've acquired a couple of hundred minis, and started collecting four different armies. I have about 9k of 40k and whfb stuff to paint, and I'm an unbelievably slow painter.

Curse you dakka it's all your fault!

Son...its okay. We are all in the same boat here, we know how you feel. And holy hell batman! 9k worth of minis to paint..... Well at least you have something to pass the time with

I had that problem once.

Then one day I discovered I didn't have enough money in my chequing account to buy a single thing of plastic glue.

After that, I made myself a semi-monthly hobby budget and stuck to it - well, mostly.

I still have problems with more minis to paint than desire to paint them, but that's because I really dislike painting.

Ha ha. A budget is probably not a bad idea, but then I'd realise what I'm spending!

Every time I'm on the net, I end up on wayland, or gifts for geeks, or fleabay....

I often look stuff up on the net I'd like to buy too.

I just don't have a credit card so I can't order stuff online without using my parents' card, so that cuts down on the temptation to order nifty stuff. ^^

I also only make it out to the store at most two or three times a month, due to needing a ride to get there - I'd take a bus, but my anxiety issues make that an impossible option, and same with a cab - and rides out to that part of town being few and far between, typically coinciding with the times my parents want to go shopping out there.

I feel your pain, brother.

Just look at it as life insurance. Everyone knows if a gamer paints his last model, he dies.

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

I know the feeling.

My new year's resolution for the next decade is to get these buggers painted.

And then the rest... and my Reaper kickstarter... and my WM/Hordes stuff..

Ha ha! Not heard that one before. Looks like I have a while left to live then. I'm going to try and avoid any more buys until I have painted at least two units in each army.

Pouncy, my problem is I have multiple credit cards, a car, and have a bonus coming next month...

I have a sudden urge to lay out all my miniatures and see how it compares.

I don't think I have quite that amount, though, and my gaming table currently has a game being played on it.

The ratio of painted to unpainted looks roughly similar, though. ^^

I feel your pain...

I just unintentionally talked myself into building a 2000 point Nurgle CSM force. Fortunately, lots of conversions and a few corners to cut, which will allow some savings.

This is about 2/3 of them, not counting my old 1st/2nd ed Orks that are in storage.

Couldn't fit more on the table

I am embarrased by how few are painted though :(

Yeah, I probably have less then. ^^

My excuse for the large ratio of unpainted models is that I like assembling models and gaming, and I don't like painting. Just because it happens to be true doesn't make it any less of an excuse.

About the same here.

I love building and playing, but i'm not much of a painter. It takes me AGES to paint a unit.

And this is just my Orks..

My DE are smaller, and easier to paint, but my orks are my current project..

It takes me about 45 minutes to 1 hour to paint a single human-sized model. And I don't normally shade, and only a little drybrush for a highlight.

more like 3-4 for me.

I have severe nerve damage in three fingers, and a slight quiver in my right arm that gets worse as i tire.

Makes painting a trip

Ahh. ^^

I only have a small, persistent tremble in my hands that prevents me from painting facial detail. ^^ No nerve damage, though.

It gets worse the harder I grip something. I can force it to steady, but the amount of time it takes to do so and then push it to a precise spot on a model means that the brush's tip is dry enough that it doesn't leave a mark, unless I load it down with too much paint. So I stopped painting face detail.

At least I can paint larger things like faces and purity seals and rivets - though I always have to go back after painting rivets and correct the splotches.

I've just started my 4th army [Sisters of Battle - sooo expensive but love the models] and have loads of unpainted stuff. My biggest problem is serious addiction to buying vintage GW models from Ebay [spend around £100-£150 each month ] I think it comes from envying my brother's 1st/2nd edition models when I was a kid [Rainbow Warriors FTW].

I did find it beneficial a few years ago to say that I wouldn't buy any more models until I had painted up at least 1500 points worth of my first army [Chaos Marines]. Took me 3 years but I got about 1750ish painted before I started buying again.

Once I finish buying my Sisters army [should be 90% complete after next payday] will impose a ban on buying and will get painting again. Apart from the odd bit from Ebay.

I almost never buy 40k with my own cash anymore. Friends+family gets me stuff for Xmas/birthday, but that's it. Means I don't have many models, but almsot all of them are painted! I was even able to go back and start re-painting my slugga boys from aobr. My first attempt at painting was so embarrassing, and now they are at basic table top quality, which for me, is golden daemon standard. Right now I'm converting flash gitz!

I have 4 armies, close to 3K of Tyranids, over 2K Nurgle, over 2K of black templars, over 1K of orks as I guesstimate. Also I started a few allied detachments like Dark Eldar (Talos paine engine, wracks so far), Necron (a few destroyers, warriors and a lord), Grey Knights (few metal models, assasins etc), vostroyans (a few), tau ( a squad of fire warriors and the grey hq guy) and I want Sister one too. All that plus 1,5 DV set. Moral of the story is, I always have something to buy, this is bad.

btw I paid for all that ~3000$ equivalent - too much, ok or good deal overall?

One of the first things I did when I started collecting 40k was start a spending spreadsheet.
I track what I bought, where from and how much, but also what type of item it is.
It turns out I've spent more on paints, glue, magnets, MDF boards, flock, etc, than models.
It also reminds me how much I've spent overall, meaning I feel less likely to splurge the next time I go online.

I think a spreadsheet would be far too organised for me. I'd deliberately not put stuff into it so I could convince myself I hadn't spent anything. I've had an initial splurge, but I think I just need to settle down to maybe a unit a month or something now, and try to make a dent in my new pile.

I like painting a lot, but there's no way I could do 3-6 a day! If I'm batch painting, it'd be maybe five over 2-3 days, otherwise I'm lucky to finish a single model in a day!

My resolution is to try to do some painting every day. Although it helps that I can leave some stuff out.

Even if you're just basecoating another model cause you're too tired to do any intricate stuff, it still counts! And it's still progress.

I agree. Slow and steady wins the race. At least I can bounce from army to army to change up the colour scheme and keep it interesting.

This^

The first few months I started collecting 40k, I didn't keep track of costs. Was buying minis, paints, tools, then a nice lamp, then a better desk, then later an airbrush... Yeah, it added up to way more than I thought I was spending. So now I keep a simple text file on my desktop and record every hobby-related purchase (no cheating or there's no point). I try to stick to a rough $200 a month budget, but sometimes I blow it anyway. But at least I know it when I do and there are no surprises later
