What problems have you had with Poots? Other than everything selling out so fast, I don't think there's much to complain about business wise.

I wasn't talking about Kingdom Death in particular but "boutique" manufacturers as a whole: Kingdom Death, Studio McVey, Raging Heroes, Avatars of War, even GW post-2011. Unless Impact Miniatures counts as boutique, they've all been pretty crap for one reason or another.

I don't care for the $400 freakshow that is Kingdom Death: Monster, but I could definitely see using those female survivors to build an Amazon army. If it was possible to just head on over to Waylands and buy a bunch at a reasonable price, that's something that would have appealed to me.

Well, they do sell Playboys and Hustlers behind the counter at BAM! and Barnes and Noble. I'm sure they could just keep it behind the counter if they wanted to sell it.

You may be able to. He mentioned selling the armor kits seperately. No details on how though.

Not sure if the survivors would be available either.

It'll be interesting seeing how things proceed after Kickstarter fulfillment is complete.

The Pinup set has been available on the Kingdom Death webstore since it was released, I believe. As the only plastic offering (not including the Experiment of Death and the limited Xmas Twilight Knight) it may be indicative of what can be expected with general release plastics going forward(?) such as the armor kits mentioned in the KS comments. Whether that will affect pricing is another matter; again, it's the cost of plastic tooling vs KD-sized production runs. Seems like a lot of it would depend on Kingdom Death's production and distribution networks especially warehousing. Since Adam doesn't want stuff just sitting on shelves, I'd imagine that KD doesn't isn't big in the storage department.

The plastic pinups were $15 add-ons during the kickstarter and had an MSRP of $18, but the resins maintained their $25 price point. So it could be that we'll see the plastic pinups at that MSRP when/if they become available through the KD store. A lot of that depends on packaging, I'd wager. The game expansions, which were all plastic, also got the usual KS discount - Dragon King at $30 versus $65 retail - but they're not getting resin releases as far as I know so it's harder to make comparisons.

However, we can compare the resin models with the expansions based on them. It may not be the best comparison either as the expansions, obviously, have game content and presumably different packaging as a result. The Flower Knight resin goes for $30; the same price as its KD:M expansion. Others like the Dung Beetle Knight, however, go for $50 resin and is listed at $35 MSRP on the KS page. This makes the game expansion the better deal (imho) as you get the model and bonus game content - if you care about the game at all.

I wouldn't consider $35 for a KD quality mini and game content 'boutique' as some are calling it. It actually sounds fairly reasonable. But maybe I'm an idiot with no sense of the value of money, so who knows. /shrug

No, but you could get it in online stores and make your money on volume, like other games. Hell, people are probably more inclined to buy a dong monster if they don't have to look some kid in the eye when they make the purchase lol. He says its to protect the small retailer, but come on - no small store is going to be stocking this sucker at $400 retail and hope someone strolls in off the street to buy it. I'm glad I got virtually everything in the kickstarter, because there's no way I'd be picking this up with the retail prices!

Same here

While the game and the mini looks amazing, I wonder if with these prices, it will ever be able to find it's way in LGS. As other have said, seems a bit of contradiction to use hips, and to have a boutique pricing strategy.

Yeah - I see a $400 game sitting on the shelf at my FLGS for quite a while.

I think It'd comes down to "Do I want this one, awesome-looking game or these 4 awesome-looking games?"

IMO - Poots might be wise to release the $400 version as a special "Kickstarter deluxe edition" and maybe split off a lot of the components and release a $150 normal version.

Not too odd around here for guys to come in and drop the cash for a case of mtg cards(6? Booster boxes I believe). That's well over $500. Granted, different type of game with chase rares and such, but there are people walking around with the money that if they want it they'll buy it.

Yeah, but there can't be that many people. In addition, a lot of people pitch in for a case or booster box to draft from. There is also a lot of other factors to consider, as there are solid ways to profit off of MTG. While I understand the point you are making, I don't think it's a good comparison.

Reality wise, I don't see a 400$ box selling very well at a retail store at all. There are very few and far between people who are willing to drop that kind of money at once, on a board game.

People spending 150$ on a base game, then purchasing expansions which ends up over 400 dollars over time, I could easily see.

RE: $400 Retail box.

I don't think you're going to see a deliberate attempt at brick and mortar or even online stores. I also think Adam will sleep well at night (or when ever he does) with that decision. My math on a couple of resins released a month (that sells out in hours) means he's not going to be going anywhere or changing his methods anytime soon.

I'd like to think maybe for the heroic KD game he would learn from KD:M and make sure there was a $100-150 retail box... but again, I don't think that's how Adam rolls. And I'm pretty OK with that too.

I wonder how Cthulhu Wars is moving in the FLGS, that has a hefty tag of $200. Anyone know of anything else in the $200-$400 range for a core box? Other than things like limited edition/special issue Cataan, Clue etc. ?

Magic benefits from the massive tournament scene and popularity. You know you can walk into any game store a few years from now and still play a game. I'm convinced that's a big reason why Warhammer is still a thing - basically a big player base feedback cycle. It's a big game, which is a draw to others because they know they can get a game. They wont try a small game because they aren't guaranteed a game and don't want to be an adopter if it's not hugely popular.

This game will have rabid fans, but its widespread success is highly doubtful due to the subject matter, price point, intentional sales throttling by the creator, etc.

Fancy schmancy chess sets? Age of Sigmar? $100 seems to be the upper limit for games of this type. Miniature Market lists a couple above that (Doomtown premium edition, Atlantic Wall, Fury of Dracula, Wellington's Victory: The Battle of Waterloo). Other than Doomtown, I haven't heard of the others.

Tried pulling up the exhibit hall map but I can't read it on my phone. I would assume it would be the CMoN booth since they usually sell the minis, but you not recognizing it must mean not.

I fear to ask if there will be "booth babes." Knowing Kingdom Death, they may hide something more sinister.

Depends on the shop. I dropped $500+ when I jumped into RC car racing, and I've seen railroad guys ring up 4 figures worth of stuff without batting an eye. For all the talk of GW being expensive, it really isn't.

I agree that a $200-250 MSRP starter might be a good idea for future sales growth.

Another fun speculation: The model will only be sold at Gencon and be limited to 100. Imagine the rage...

Super glad to hear he'll have a booth. I'll need to visit it.

Thinking about it, if he isn't going to sell any kickstarter product at the booth, then he either has to show up with something new, or have a fairly empty booth (I mean, look at his webstore- what he has available at any given moment isn't likely to fill out his booth well).

On a side note, he'll probably have some small demo for Kingdom Death. And that'd be awesome (I'm really wondering how the game will play).

I'll do my best to pop over there during exhibitor hours to get a sense of what he has and to report to the team here.

The booth is over in the tiny booth corner, which last year was strangely dimly lit.
