This may be in the wrong section so sorry if it is! Considering branching out my ...wargammer-ness... into new areas and I am wondering what the general impression is of other games out there. There is probably a bunch out there idk

I honestly don't know why we need to create an us-and-them mentality over games, finding the best in order to ridicule players of the rest. The market is fething saturated right now - and it's a great thing. Every game offers different gameplay. Play them all. You'll have a better time.

"Best" is going to vary in definition greatly from person to person. What one person loves, another may hate.
I think warmachine/hordes and infinity are poised as the best games overall right now. WM/H has extremely clear and well-designed rules that emphasise aggressive play.
Infinity has the same kind of equipment micromanagement as 40k but steps up the detail to almost rpg levels of detail.
Malifaux and dropzone commander get honorable mentions, but The former seems to be having some balance issues with a few of their strongest masters and the later is still too new to call.
I've heard very little in general about dark age or dust warfare.

Looking for fun articles on painting, tactics and wargaming? Are you after a new regular blog to follow? Are you a bit bored with nothing better to do?
If the answer to any of the above is 'well, I guess' you could probably do worse than read my blog! Regular wargaming posts, painting and discussions

I'm not that interested in other wargames.
Minitaures wise 40K is my favourite hobby game, but I prefer Star Wars miniatures (provided you don't include the fan made stuff).
My favourite Board Game at the moment is Star Trek: Fleet Captains.
My favourite RPG will always be Star Wars D6.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

Each of those games you have listed offers a different type of experience. I would try and look at some of the imagery, background and game mechanics of them and then after that take a look at some games in action if possible. Most gaming groups will be pretty friendly and only too glad to have a new player join their group, so will no doubt help you get into things.
Of course in an ideal world I would say to try all of them! Wargaming has never been so varied and well supported as it is now, easy to find opponents and get into, but obviously time & money will be the biggest limitation.

Where's battletech?
Where's Anime Tactics?
Where's Kings of War/ Warpath?
Where's FOW?
Your not going to find a "Best". You have an interest, you need to step out or your comfort zone and try something new. Initial investment- about 20 bucks. Get a couple of guys, a book, and then try it out.
You don't always have to follow the crowd.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

No Malifaux? Also, why the listing for Warmachine, Hordes and Warmahodes?
I prefer Malifaux for small games, Warmahordes for bigger ones.

I feel that most people have spoken. There is no 'best'.
Maybe you could make your own house game to play with your friends? It's quite easy.

My new rule for wargamming.
Own no more than two armies for any system. The money you would have spent on a 3rd 'System X" army can and should be used to look at a new game system.
The market is so huge right now that you would be doing yourself a disservice to fanboi any one game system to the detriment of others. Two armies assures that you will always be able to teach someone new a different system to get them interested in the game.
So to your poll I say "yes" and "you have woefully underestimated the options you have available to yourself in branching out. NOt only have you forgotten quality systems in your selected Sci Fi/Fantasy selection, you have completely discounted the realm of historicals.

Even if I don't believe there is a better one. Just different.
For me at the moment Malifaux, small number of models to paint, small number of models to carry, easy and fun to play, love the aesthetics and relatively easier to fin a game. There are however others that look interesting but I still don't have time to start yet another game system. Even my KoW is king of packed away at the moment as I love the rules but need to paint a ton a stuff and it is not that easier to find a game

Kings of War - and you can find a sample version of the rules and all the army lists for free, online. (They intend to put the full rules up for free again, someday... right now it is only mostly up - some of the magic items are missing, and some of the special rules.)
Mordheim. Also free over to GW.
The Auld Grump, best rules? Maybe, maybe not, but the ones that I play the most.

As others have already said, there are a ton of options out there right now. It depends on what you're into. If you like historicals, there is so much variety it'll make your head spin. It's like getting sucked into a black hole of miniature wargaming awesomeness.
There are also plenty of other fantasy and science fiction games.
It would help if we knew your interests a bit better. Are you only looking for science fiction or fantasy? Or are you open to pretty much anything?

Lord of the Rings/Hobbit, just wait to see if your stoer has a sale for either the rulebook or the box. It's still GW, but it's relatively cheap to get armies for and it's really simple to learn but difficult to master, like all great games.

I enjoy Kings of War myself, Dust warfare and the newly released Dreadball. But I think, currently, I'm having the most fun with Dreadball. That gets my "other" vote.
