Probably, but at the moment the modpacks are still in the Beta Testing stage. They're still currently adding and removing mods with each release, while they try to figure out what works well and what doesn't. I believe they're currently waiting on a bugfix from ExtraUtilities.

*revives thread

I'm looking at Monster and it looks cool. Shame it's lost Soul Shards, but that mod went off in an odd new direction, and not for the better. It was still usable, but more tedious.

I've been paying Moonquest for a while, hence my absence. It's an OK pack, but I miss a couple of key mods. Besides, the person I was playing with is buggering off to Uni so I may be back on the FTB server for a while

We still going for Monster pack?

Any more news on this? I want to get back into FTB, but part of me wants to wait for a restart...

In the launcher you can click the dropdown that says "Recommended" and switch it back to "1.1.3". I haven't bothered to update the server because no-one was playing on it anyway

4oursword wrote:Any more news on this? I want to get back into FTB, but part of me wants to wait for a restart...

I can't give any news I don't have. The last "weekly news" from FTB was two weeks ago and didn't mention anything about Monster. All I can really give you are the changelogs they have for the various Beta versions of Monster here:
https://feedthebeast.atlassian.net/wiki/display/PML/Monster
They were still changing things relating to biome generation in the latest update so it's still risky to start a proper server just yet.

However...

Back when we first switched from Tekkit to FTB Ultimate, I ran a "Temporary" Direwolf20 modpack server while we waited for Ultimate to become stable. This server had lots of warnings about the world being reset as soon as Ultimate was ready, but people still managed to build quite a lot of cool things. It also helped to find any issues with things that should be enabled or disabled from the default configs.

As it seems no-one is interested in Unleashed anymore, I could run a similar "Temporary" Monster server until it becomes stable. Again with the understanding that the world would have a short lifespan until Monster gets a proper release. Does that sound like a good plan or would people prefer to just wait for the stable release/suddenly get all nostalgic for Unleashed?

I think the temporary beta Monster sever is a good idea. We can get our heads around some of the changes to the core mods and begin to learn about the new ones (that look like they're staying)
I, for one, am interested in Blood Magic, looks like a cool magic mod.

Were there be dragons....

Just to throw another idea out there, what about some form of Hardcore mode ftb server for a little while as a bit of a challenge? Or something similar to the voltz pack and on the last couple of days before the reset we can let unleash all hell before returning to peaceful normality.
Just another idea, feel free to poop all over it

A beta server sounds good. I assume the chances of item transfer are nil?

Last time I checked, that one was disabled by default. However, if I recall correctly, that was just because it might not be considered "kid friendly" to some people, rather than it being disabled because of lag/overpoweredness. I'll have a look and think about whether to enable it (if it's just the "kid friendly" issue then I probably will).

Optio wrote:Just to throw another idea out there, what about some form of Hardcore mode ftb server for a little while as a bit of a challenge?

While I enjoyed the UHS pack for a while in singleplayer, I can understand how it might not interest some people. Also if by hardcore you mean deathbans, it could lead to a rather quiet server (even if they were temporary).
Optio wrote:Or something similar to the voltz pack and on the last couple of days before the reset we can let unleash all hell before returning to peaceful normality.

That just sounds like it would become an unbearable lagfest sadly :(

Of course if others think these suggestions sound interesting, do chime in.

While item transfer are out (due to the number of changed mods), I will be looking at mods like bspkrs' Starting Inventory

Neat.

One thing I have found useful is the custom recipes mod. I used it on my moonquest server to effectively recreate Equivalent Exchange 2's iron>gold>diamond and back transfusing. Not sure if it's in the modpack, but that might be neat. Maybe add the need for a catalyst like Clay. I don't know to be honest

MineTweaker is in the pack, but it's only there so the FTB Team could correct a couple of conflicting recipes (i.e. two different mods had the same recipe for two different items).
Recipe Changes
Fixed conflict between OpenBlocks XP Grate and Agriculture Grill
Fixed conflict between Steve's Carts Handle and RemoteIO Iron Bar
Removed recipe for End portal frame

I'm not going to go adding in more custom recipes just because you like EE2.

Looking at the wiki it is enabled by default for Monster. Horizons is the one that has it disabled.

EDIT: Also, while I know it is nigh-impossible to transfer mod items across, would it be possible to transfer vanilla items (diamonds, iron and the like?). Unsure if vanilla items have their IDs changed.

Not at the moment it's not. Although they may just be waiting for an update that Pahimar keeps promising.

The wiki may be out of date or just plain incorrect, because the launcher has it disabled by default.

Sorry but for things like item transfers, I prefer an all or nothing approach, otherwise it ends up being unfair on someone somehow. That's why I'm looking at the Starting Inventory mod, to at least give a decent "Starter pack" that's the same for everyone.

Ah, ok. Shows me for not checking the launcher.

That's ok, was only a suggestion. (I don't have nearly enough vanilla resources for a transfer, anyway) I see what you mean.

Dammit.

Something neat that I learned on Monster is that with all of the ridiculous different stone types from Geostrata, they can be used for all the same recipes as regular stone and cobble. This means they can be made into Compressed Cobblestone and uncrafted to turn them into regular cobble.

I kind of WANT to get back in to FtB, but after the strain the last version kept putting on my computer even AFTER I upgraded it... I'm a bit iffy. I think a test run would at least let me see how much I want to put in to it after it goes "permanent".

Test run would be great. One of the best things about the game is building up from scratch, and a forced reset sounds fun especially if there is another inevitable reset coming up.

Monster is a LOT more demanding on computers than Unleashed is. Playing on a server rather than single player helps (because the server can handle all the background processing), but it's still a lot more demanding.

A test run could also help us decide if Monster is "too much" for most people and if we would be better on a smaller pack like the Direwolf20 pack or such.

I'm currently doing videos on a singleplayer world with just Tinker's and Railcraft- and aside from being able to grind gravel into flint (I like using flint in early game tinker's tools) and certain liquid transportation systems, I'm finding that I have pretty much everything I need outside of vanilla.

I'm playing quite a bit of FTB on a singleplayer world at the moment... So it'd be good to get on the server again.

Yeah, then let's do that.

If Monster is way too slow on my computer I would definitely prefer a smaller pack.

How about FTB lite?
http://ftbwiki.org/Feed_The_Beast_Lite_2

Or Tech World 2
http://ftbwiki.org/Tech_World_2

Automatically Appended Next Post:
They both use very little ram and have many of the populay mods in.

If you're going Tech World, why not Magic World? Magic's got a bunch of 'technical' mods like Railcraft, while letting you do all the automation you want as well- just using magic systems instead of powerlines and such.

I was suggesting mods that aren't as heavy as FTB monster. It says on the wiki that techworld 2 and lite 2 don't use much ram and they are both Release versions, magic world still say BETA testing on the launcher.
