Oooh, a bump, Reposting the last update for the page flip. Have a seat stick around, more to come

Holy crap I got a lot done, woot. I'm really pleased with the mediplex, I found a couple of things out that should make future buildings even better too. I really should have gone over the mediplex more carefully with the cotton swabs, there were pools of dip in some recesses that finally decided to run after the fact, I caught a few but others made messes that were too set to easily fix. They're on the inside mostly, at least. I know to watch out for this and to pre-siphon all of the recesses for future buildings. I should be able to cover up these messes with other forms of weathering. The other thing I determined was a good way to handle the building without touching anything getting dipped. I'll just show you tomorrow when I take pictures of the building and dumpsters after the dip has cured.

I think between tonight and tomorrow nap/night, I might just be able to have finished three buildings and two bits of scatter. Gonna upload pictures on the laptop, so expect those soonish.

Ok, here's a photo dump for you, but the best is yet to come.

Some poor souls are going to have to do without dollar store pill organizers, I saw this and immediately thought 28mm dumpsters!

Seems like a pretty good size to me, big enough you could stuff a guardsman or corporation marine into each section. If you were a jerk That brush-on glue sounded pretty handy so I grabbed a bottle of it while I was out and about.

Front of the industrial building, will have to come up with a name, or at least a better idea of it's function. Thoughts?

Front of the mediplex/center/whatever. I like the brightness of the building in contrast with how dark everything else has been coming out. Though, now that there's dip on it... it's definitely not that bright anymore, and just as dingy as the rest of it.

What the hell, I decided to checker the roof (and ceiling). It's a bit... Alice in Wonderland or something... for me, but... definitely more interesting than it was before. What purpose shall this building serve? I was thinking of something industrial like maybe a machine shop or something. Thoughts?

Still happy with how the mediplex looks, I like the contrast of the red and silver grates with the white.

Duplicated the exterior details on the interior. For both buildings I spent less time on the interior, I just sprayed semi-carefully instead of masking at all. Still looks alright, IMO, and It won't be seen as regularly.

So what should be going on in this building once I get around to working out interior details for the structures? Looks like my camera lens may still have that smudge on it...

Ahh, my first deadzone structure. Watchtower, I guess. Just had to spray the black and fill in the metal for this one. Still need to edge highlight the black sections.

That soldier better hope that the plague dog can't climb!

Dumpsters! A bit colorful, but my board is going to be pretty dreary without some spot color now and then. I figure the blue is waste, green is recycle, and orange is hazardous waste.

These are empty, but I may make something to put inside of them eventually.

CRAP! I spoke too soon, hope that Ranger is a quick shot!

Yay undercoat!

Everything is pretty snug so I don't have to glue any of the pieces together, yay modular stuff! Just need another conduit box thing. Might paint these later tonight.

Ok, out of pictures. I've got more stuff to photograph, but it's all drying and such. Feel like I got quite a bit done, especially compared to things lately. Thoughts, comments?

Hopefully will put up a bit more later, but I may get tired and crash.

Some fantastic work, all looking great. Love the dumpsters, though they need rust.

Thanks . Rust comes after the dip stage right before the flat top coat. So don't worry, its coming.

Thanks It's funny I'm starting to blossom/butterfly at junk terrain after I spent however many hundred dollars on battlezone terrain If I get half a moment before/after the barbecue today I'll be sealing the mediplex and dumpsters, which are halfway done with rust.

Absolutely ingenious use of random stuff to make some great terrain, really shows what a little effort and creative thinking can do. Nice work on the battlezone stuff too (although I reckon the medicentre needs some interior furniture/props. Any ideas/plans?)

Battle systems has a batch of medical dressing I think I'll use. If I come up with anything else while I'm tinkering though... gonna get stuff figured out and just take pictures for fun, maybe with captions. So dressing and props make sense. Need to do some counters and desks etc.

Haha, lots of good stuff, but the dumpsters are the best. Not only did I love the idea for them, the picture with the "SURPRISE!" was fantastic

Oh yeah, forgot you had Battle Systems stuff on the way. Should liven things up and add a lot of character/detail. Caption shots should be fun...

Sheesh you guys are making me blush (underneath my terrible winter beard which does not look good and needs to be shaved right to death...)!

I liked the dog in the dumpster but if I open them too much the paint is going to peel, I should have gone over the entire surface with really fine sand paper. I'm noticing that a lot of found items don't take paint really well. The storage tank is still pretty easy to chip/peel the paint off of, and it's had polywhatever AND a flat coat.

What I would really like to do is do some narrative "battle reports" or possibly even a pseudo web comic. If I thought I could make it funny and or interesting often enough :p I'm not much of a writer but I should be able to come up with one liners every so often...

Man... just think of how much battlezones I'd have done already if I'd gotten them not two months late... Oh well, maybe I'll give them a hard time about it at their gencon booth

Have you sealed the terrain? Gloss for hardening then matt for taking away shine usually works.

The dip is minwax poly shades, it has the poly in it. Forget if its polyeurethane or polyethelene or whatever, but that in and of itself is really hard. Then they get top coated to. It's just that some of the items are really smooth and even the undercoat of spray paint doesn't stick very well. So if the smooth soft plastic of the coffee can bends and the paint pops off, it won't matter how tough the outer layers are. Just need to rough things like that up just a wee tiny bit moving forward.

Yeah, it's something I'm gonna have to be proactive about. I'm hoping really fine grit sand paper will do the trick. I don't want the surface to be especially rough, but gotta scratch it a little or the paint will just peel off somewhere down the road.

May not get those two buildings done today. The girls are napping but I've not got nearly the energy that I had yesterday, and Starbound is distracting me a bit.

Wow, you've been busy. I really like how your terrain is coming out. It's making me want to actually paint mine. And buy more. I really like the industrial building.

The pill container dumpsters though are just plain genius! I need to steal that idea.

Thanks Sometimes I see something like that and the idea is immediate, like the item was made for it. Sometimes it takes a little more work like the big storage tank.

Thanks for popping by everyone, the comments, criticisms, suggestions, and all are rather useful and I appreciate them all If I wasn't posting on Dakka with the level of feedback I'm getting, I'd never turn over projects at the rate I have been. So thanks for hanging around folks

If you are going to do a lot of "reclaimed" terrain you may want to investigate a plaspak, which is a primer designed to assist the hard to adhere to plastics to hold paint. I used to use it in my trade many moons ago when we had to paint prototypes to look all pretty.

You'll probably see this in the Mantic thread, but thought I'd post it here since your Deadzone terrain is awesome too. Anarchy is releasing a Mantic Deadzone Stencil set that you might find useful for adding some more themed detail to your stuff. I'm pretty sure i'll pick it up, and think I have a discount code form backing the kickstarter.

Shame you're having trouble with peeling, but yeah seems liek you're on a winner for correcting it for future items with the sanding. Surprising though that a gloss and a matte coat are having difficulty holding it down, but I haven't experimented anywhere near as much as you.

Well so far it's just a couple of pieces, that coffee can for the storage tank and the dumpsters really. None of the deadzone stuff. Well... just spraying a fine layer of airbrush paint for a basecoat will come off pretty easy, but a nice coat of Krylon THEN airbrush paint works fine. On the battlezone stuff. The tank and dumpsters I think were just too smooth, maybe needed washed or something. It's not peeling yet, I could just see it not holding up.

Thanks for the link. I'm a bit afraid of the cost to ship those. Plus they don't look very big for 9 pounds. Or was it euros? Even then 12-15 or better monies the items shown seem kind of limited. You backed the kickstarter, thoughts? I guess it also said they gave you an A4 sheet full of them so that's probably more than is shown..

Might have to stick to tape though, kind of had a frozen hobby budget after summer of kickstarters 2013, and then i spent nearly $100 buying minis for dioramas as gifts

BTW Grim I love how you have spent a metric fethton on Deadzone terrain but are spending more time painting pill boxes and coffee cans than the terrain you shelled out for.

Damn! 2 pages!
The 2 buildings look great, but I really want to see a yellow/mustard coloured building without the black, and just weathered with the Minwax to really darken and stain the yellow. Likewise, I'd love to see a medical facility in the pale green/turquoise colours. The white with red seems... very aggressive, or militaristic. Perhaps a control room for the Corporation. I'm certainly getting ideas to nick from you when my stuff eventually arrives, I don't have any AW stuff coming, though - so I'll have to make do with other stuff. Probably found objects, bits of resin that I have sitting around here and some of the Tablescapes cardstock stuff.

For plastic adhesion, I found that Mr Surfacer sticks to that kind of plastic really well:

It comes in various "grits", but it's brilliant stuff. I've also heard that a particular type of spray paint - Krylon Camo - has extra stuff in it to help it bond effectively to plastic, which could be a readily available source of undercoat spray for that kind of thing.

As for metallics, it's a yes and no thing, in my opinion. It's not especially realistic that everything in the far-flung future would be made of metal - especially buildings and armour plate, yet we still give things like Space Marine Armour, Dreadnoughts and so forth chipped paint with "metal" armour underneath - mostly because it gives a good/effective visual shorthand. With stuff like bins/dumpsters you can again go both ways. I encounter both plastic and metal-lidded dumpsters in my travels, so you could go with either in the DeadZone future as well.

Pipes and such are looking good. I need to do some similar, but I think I'll wait a few months for the stuff that will go with them to finally show up...
