Thanks guys, here's hoping I find time to use it.

Another misguided hobby lobby purchase... found a decorative box that just barely fits old sabol army transport figure foams. I think it's maybe 5-5.5" deep so about 5" of foams. The ogres will need a fairly deep tray, either 3 or 3 inches. Not sure. Planning on the dragon to not fit in anything. Could potentially get 85 figures 17/tray but that doesn't work for the big ones. I'll do some figuring. Would be nice to situate the minis in one box once they're painted, would go nicely with the book boxes for the rules and tiles.

Hobby lobby $24, 16 with coupon. They have bigger and smaller ones. I considered getting a smaller one for a dice box. Actually come to think of it they have a tall one that may make a decent dice tower...

That's an awesome Miniatures storage chest. I wish we had something like your Hobby Lobby over here. The place seems like a goldmine for cool and useful stuff. The portable paint station looks great as well, though the thought of painting on my lap fills me with terror!

I don't love painting on my lap either, preferably I can drop it on the kitchen table or similar, and when the kids come around I can drop the lid to protect my work. But I'll paint easy steps on the lap-mounted tray if it means getting more progress than none.

Hobby lobby is pretty cool. Their prices range from pretty decent to fairly-exorbitant-but-largely-because-you're-buying-products-marketed-at-the-hobby-crowd and occasionally they deploy virtually can't miss clearance.

They have a lot of useful stuff but I won't shop there. You can call bigotry a stand for "Christian principles" but it's still bigotry. Motivation is irrelevant. I just order stuff online, they don't sell anything you can't find elsewhere. Ok, I'll put the soapbox back in the closet now. I'm not judging anyone for where they shop. I don't eat at chick-fil-a, but if you want a chicken sandwich, get it wherever you want. I'm not trying to impose my views on anyone…except my children. I'm brainwashing the hell out of them

Hobby Lobby product selection is regional. There have been times where I driven 45 minutes to the nearest Hobby Lobby to find stuff I've seen other people buy there, only to find the local store doesn't carry it. After the second try, I just abandoned the idea of being a Hobby Lobby customer.

Grimdork always finds cool stuff at his

Knew HL was religious, was unaware of specific bigotry.

Yeah mine is very nearly right across the street. I can haunt the clearance pretty easily as its an easy place to drag the kids. I have also had trouble finding stuff at mine that I've heard about online though.

Honestly ordering is best once you know what you want and how to buy it in forms that aren't hobby-specic, but sometimes I find cool stuff in this store. Right now I could get upwards of half a dozen snap fit brand tie fighters for maybe $16 each instead of 40 but that 40 is overpriced. 16 isn't bad but I think they're out of scale with my one x-wing and I'm oversaturated on minis atm.

The box is awesome though, Adam's right that it'd be perfect on the table for some d&d.

That chest is excellent, the laptop paint station looks really useful as well. Such a shame that the UK has no real Hobby Lobby equivalent.

That does suck, though you guys do seem to turn up somewhat cooler hobby stuff at your poundlands than I tend to at the dollar store.

Made a couple of quick mods to the paint box. Attached a BBQ grill light (lol) and mounted a block of wood to the back such that the lid stays at roughly a 90 degree angle to the base so the light shines on the work area. I just need to do finalize some brush storage and maybe add a slot in the base for my brush soap, though the soap is only an issue if I end up mostly using the portable rig. I also need to make some kind of prop or guard to keep the lid from potentially slapping down on me heh. And if I could figure a good way to mount the lamp without the default thing...so the box would close without the lamp having to come off.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also I worked out that I could get a 2" and 3x 1" foams into that chest I bought . So plenty for the 9 biguns in the 2" and ~20 normal figs besides, and around 20 figs in each small tray. That's 80+ the big stuff or 9. I think the whole crew is something like 100 or 110 maybe? I think I can just about fit everyone bit the dragon if I double up on small stuff like goblins and orclings etc. Also will have to find a place for barrels doors and so on.

Brilliant Idea Grimdork!

I store my "once in a blue moon going to the FLGS" hobby kit in a tripart stackable sewing box, but it's too short for my taller bottles. Really like the blue foam idea.

Hobby Lobby can have good stuffs, I admit I shop there occassionally but not regularly. Tend to spend too much if I do Michael's near me has an ok selection. What I'm really craving is a Hobby Town :( Nearest one is 2 hours away sadly.

I have never even heard of a hobby town. Honestly I like to figure out what hobby stuff is made of and then determine a source for it that isn't marketed as a hobby item. Buying plastic garage sale signs from Walmart is cheaper than buying legitimate plasticard.

I think I sorted the light issue too, can't find it at home though I know I have some... but that strap tape stuff... like 3/4 inch wide or so with a bunch of holes down the length? Made of metal? That stuff, two wee loops of it secured to hold the light on, then I can still flip it back and shut the lid.

Alright it was bothering me I had to get it done... To be fair I may do some more tweaking in the future but there's the lighting and brush storage sorted for now.

Cool! you could put a small piece of metal on the bottom and magnetise your minis to sit on top of it, so they don't move about as well. An old cookie tin lid or bottom can be cut with tin snips for this. Just make sure you deburr those edges or they'll be sharp as stuffing.

repurposing stuff is always a good idea in my book, the original version of recycling imo ^_^

https://www.hobbytown.com/

^^ used to spend a lot of time in these places, looking at model cars etc - they used to carry everything from scenic express stuffs, Lionel trains all kinds of hobbying/modeling materials. Haven't been in one in years sadly. I dunno if it's the same now, you could see if there's one near you, check it out.

There used to be all kinds of mom and pop stores back in the day, selling miniatures and hobby stuff :( I guess they just ended up going out of business + internet prolly didn't help.

Anyway sorry for dragging off topic! I love where you're going with your 'to go' kit!

Indeed!

Painted on the goblins a bit. Nothing worth showing.

Got a little city building done, slowly grinding towards a 2x4' 'run away from zombies' layout.

That is a great terrain product. I really wanted to back it each time the have thrown out a Kickstarter, but it's always in lots that cover a 2ftx2ft area. I don't play anything that occupies less than a 4ftx4ft table, and I can't justify $400 on terrain to have a matching set that will cover at that.

Yeah the same with the size and cost. I got what should cover a 2x6 so 1/4 short of a 4x4 but an extra mat to stretch it. Probably the only time I'll every do that, bit I've always wanted a city.

Last two mods to my painting case. Now I have brush soap integrated and a slot for a nail to prop up the lid in case of toddler attack. Bit more work on the goblins.

Yeah first thing the little one did when she saw my paint station was try to slam it on my hands

Goblins are starting to look like goblins now...just gotta do metal, minimal highlights , and bitty details like eyes and teeth.

The kickstand was a good addition.

2ft x6ft is still pretty healthy. A basketball court, or a park could fill the gap.

Or a parking lot with all the toy cars you have. Used car lot, or scrapyard too.

Yeah originally I was gonna use battlezones from mars attacks for the last quarter but i expanded those into the factory/urban tile board so I still have to consider my options. Plus side is I'll have a 4x8 urban sprawl

Gotta make more ceilings and floors though..woefully lacking in the scenery but mostly because they take up so much space on the card sheets. Easy enough to replicate my own and i have been, but slowly.

Yeah enough cars for a parking lot for sure.

Theo! Was starting to wonder if you had gone AWOL but then again I haven't been around much either.

Got those goblins done. After so long not finishing anything it's nice to have any progress.

I've got six orcs and two mawbeasts lined up next. Hopefully the slightly increased workload doesn't put me off

Caught up on flash and arrow, or as much as Netflix has, and almost got legends of tomorrow down as well. I guess I could watch super girl. Also two or three seasons of supernatural behind. And stranger things. And half a dozen others... it's a good time for TV lol. But while I paint I'm watching DS9 again, don't really need to see it to be entertained.

Six melee gobbos and then the whole gang.

Those gobbos look good. I've been working on the same set, but lost steam after finishing the orcs.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

The latest mods to the hobby box are brilliant, especially the light.

Nice work on the goblins too.

Just a rough spot. Haven't touched (even picked up) a model or a brush since mid July. Double whammy today, and severe burn out. I didn't even open DakkaDakka for weeks. Slowly coming back though.
