Infiltrating Hawwa'

If you're like me and look forward to seeing The Hobbit extended edition, it's worth knowing that the first release won't have it.
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/movies/hobbit-blu-ray-release-march-19-wont-have-extended-edition/#/0
Middle-earth fans who buy “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” when it is released on Blu-ray and DVD March 19 will be privy to a sneak preview of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” — the second movie in Peter Jackson’s planned trilogy based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien. But those hoping for an extended edition of the first film will have to wait until the holidays.
“An Unexpected Journey” will go on sale March 19 in three different combinations — a Blu-ray combo pack ($35.99), a Blu-ray 3-D combo pack ($44.95) and a DVD two-disc special edition ($28.98) — but all of them will feature the 169-minute theatrical version of the film, Warner Bros. announced Tuesday, adding that an extended edition will be available in time for the holidays.
So why would any self-respecting “Lord of the Rings” fan buy now instead of waiting for the scenes that didn’t make the theatrical cut? Warner Bros. is hoping to sweeten the deal by giving buyers an exclusive first look at “The Desolation of Smaug.” The event, hosted by Jackson, will be streamed live on March 24 at noon Pacific Time, and only holders of an UltraViolet code (found in the Blu-ray and DVD packs or issued by select digital retailers upon purchase) will have access.
The DVD and Blu-ray packs will also include Jackson’s behind-the-scenes production videos, from starting production and scouting locations to the film’s premiere in Wellington, New Zealand, last November.
A trailer that will quickly hit youtube most certainly won't be enough for me to want to get it now, then again.
If this has already been discussed, my apologies.

I'm waiting until all three films are released in their extended-cut versions and then getting the full blue-ray box set.
Not getting burned again like I did w/LotR! (Or GoT's for that matter...)

There was an extended edition for Game of Thrones? Other then the first printing having 'The guy who kinda looks like George Bush's head on a pike for 5 seconds', whats different from the later releases?

Well, 'extended' in the sense that the Holiday 'uber-special box set came with both blue-ray+dvd discs AND the first episode of Season 2! (and a mini Rheagal's dragon egg.)
I think they also included a couple additional bonus features from the behind the scenes type stuff
Hence why I'm not picking up season 2 until the holidays this year, in case they pull the same stunt again.
I figure PJ will likely have an all-inclusive super box set of all 3 extended editions done up in some fancy packaging for Xmas 2015.
Which is when I'll finally be picking the Hobbit trilogy up.
Until then, well, there's a reason I simply pay for The Movie Network!

Looking forward to the extended version of the hobbit?
Unlike the LotR films, The Hobbit is ALREADY an extended version. It's nearly 3 hours long and full of padding. I enjoyed it overall, but it's not a great movie. Does this movie really need additional out-takes and deleted scenes added to it? Not really. Nevertheless, out of curiosity if nothing else if there are multiple versions of this coming on DVD and one has more footage I'd wait for the longer version. Still not sure if we're buying this one on home video, but I can wait till autumn for a version with more footage. By then I might actually want to see it again. I was in no rush to buy it now, this movie just didn't generate the excitement of the LotR movies to see it again.

I was just about to say, isn't the Hobbit already extended? That's why it's three movies not the planned two?

I'm just gonna wait and upgrade all my LOTR's to bluray at the same time.
Actually, at that point, it'll probably be bluray 3d.

I'll probably get the extended versions if, like TLotR, they come with two DVDs with extras.
For my own interests, I've found them really interesting, specially when it comes to props, dresses and scale miniatures.

Hmm, exactly the same as they did for the LotR trilogy, who would have guessed?
Theatrical version for when it exits the cinema, then follow up at christmas time for an 'extended edition' in one of those nice book-shaped cases with a Limited edition figurine/etc
LotR, came with a set of bookends that looked like those king statues that sit either side of the big river, a smeagol statuette (you could purchase a matching gollum one separately for a gazillion pounds) and a minas tirith trinket box thing, plus 2 bonus DVDs about making the music and making the gollum character.
So what are the odds the main release will be nothing too special, then in December we'll get an extended edition release over 4 discs with some sort of collectable.

Yeah, because that "special view at the new movie" totally won't be around the internet the day after the event.
Sigh. I like how the movie industry keeps refusing to acknowledge the internet's influence.

King Kong showed the world that Peter Jackson had reached the directorial level at which the studio could no longer tell him to cut the damn film. And clearly he lacks the instincts and/or ego control to use that power wisely.
IIRC, he also released a King Kong extended version, which really is a bad joke considering how much the theatrical version would be improved with 20 minutes of *cuts*. Much like how Lucas lost his way after being seduced by the dark side (merchandising), Jackson went bad after accepting the One Ring (near-absolute creative control). It's a shame.

I think it says a lot about Hollywood that we've now got this business model that drip feeds us film content over several editions.
I mean, with LotR there was genuine pressure to include all this material in a bladder friendly movie version. So they put that material into the DVD extended editions. That's cool (well, releasing the film edit and then later on releasing the extended version isn't cool, but having different versions is okay).
But now it seems that's just become the assumed method for making this stuff. Even when it's the Hobbit, and no-one on Earth who could possibly argue that what the Hobbit needed was more content. But this has become the way the studio understands to make money on big, sprawling fantasy epics.

It makes sense to have extended edition of lotr but the Hobbit is supposed to be a smaller scale story it kind of clashes with the Hobbit's themes to have an extended version of the Hobbit especially considering that I don't even think there's enough materiel in the book for 3 movies (2 for sure though).
