I love quite a good bit of metal. Guys like Lamb of God, Amon Amarth, Meshuggah, Mastodon, and Falconer, etc.
It really all depends on my mood of course, as Im getting older, I of course have added many other types of music to what I listen to, but I always come back to metal.
I love metal but am not too familiar with bands other than Metallica and Megadeath. I look forward to taking down names of bands I'll see mentioned in this thread.
For Thrash, you may like Sodom, Slayer, Anthrax, early Black Metal such as Venom, Celtic Frost or Bathory, Kreator and possibly melodic death metal bands such as Dark Tranquility. You may also like Iron Maiden, Budgie and Judas Priest.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I want to show readers this band:
It's Irish black metal. It's pretty good, if you like black metal of course! Sadly the EP's not that widely available!

I've been listening to metal since before I was a teenager. Black Metal is my favorite, but I listen to pretty much all of it.
Some of my favorites: Watain, Leviathan, Wolves in the Throne Room, In Solitude, Chthonic, Goatwhore, Alcest, Dissection
I'm both selfish and rational. I'm scheming, secretive and manipulative; I use knowledge as a tool for personal gain, and in turn obtaining more knowledge. At best, I am mysterious and stealthy; at worst, I am distrustful and opportunistic.
Do my best to have Kerrang playing when ever I have the chance I do like other music, but Metal is my default setting. In fact since I started listening to Kerrang on my PC my music purchases have increased ten fold.
Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

My wife and I went to Wacken a couple of years back and discovered that its the happiest pace on earth. Went to a Nightwish gig about a month ago, that was epic. The replacement vocalist was excellent AND super hot. Finally, enjoyed a raucous Alestorm gig and then my mates took the band on a trip to Hobbiton.
I suggest reading steffmetal.com, she does good reviews and such.
Metal, you say? I'm a pretty big metal head. Favorites include Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Ghost, Xasthur, Chthonic, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Emperor, Demons and Wizards, The Berzerker, Impaled, Machinehead, Cattle Decapitation, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Naglfar, Opeth, and wow this list is getting kind of long so I'll stop there.
....also even some numetal (most of it is bad to mediocre, but I do like Slipknot and Mushroomhead).
Used to be really into Heavy Metal music but now I only listen to a few Heavy Metal bands, mostly the originators of the genre such as Black sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. As far as more extreme versions of Heavy Metal go, I only really like Slayer's "Reign in Blood" and Napalm
Death's "Scum". Most Heavy Metal albums however I find get boring and repetitive about half way through and I have to turn them off.
Run Like Hell Hometown Heroes! I am in the crowd here.
Also, here is my favorite act of all time, back in their youth. All hail the Metal Gods!
We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".
“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”
The only Canadian band I like is Rush, I tried getting into Neil Young but I don't know if he's really for me I know he's released some critically acclaimed albums and has some real creative and clever ideas but I'm still on the edge if this is an artist I can get into (not a big fan of country and
country music has quite an influence on his style, although I like Meat Puppets which is a psychedelic and country inspired punk/alternative rock band).

I would only consider Disturbed and Metallica as too mainstream to be considered metal (unless you are only a fan of the earliest metalicca, like Black and Ride the Lightning), but guys like Dio and Ozzy are definitely metal.

Being popular has nothing to do with whether something is metal or not, heavy metal music is a specific type of harsh sounding rock music noted for it's thick sound, long guitar solos, loud noise, banshee-like vocals, self-indulgence, macho lyrics, distortion, etc that originated somewhere
between the late 60's and early 70's that took most of it's influences from blues and psychedelic rock, and early Heavy Metal songs were often hard to distinguish from Hard Rock songs. Of course since then Heavy Metal music has become it's own genre with many variations on the style
such as Thrash Metal, Glam Metal, New Wave of British Metal, Stoner Metal, etc. I'll repeat Heavy Metal music has nothing to do with being mainstream or not, some of the most well known bands are Heavy Metal bands such as Led Zeppelin.

erm...
Why is it that mainstream <> metal?
Oh...also, TOOL!
see now, Tool is considered, depending on your point of view, to be either Prog rock, or Prog metal.... And if it's mainstream, it gets radio play, and everyone knows that real metal just doesnt get radio play in the US

agreed, but there are those who are in dissenting views as to whether or not Tool is metal or not.

OK, you do realize most the old metal classics can be found on a video game. Heck, I can play "The Number of the Beast" on my Xbox. That used to melt brains, now its just... mainstream.

To you Sir, I will quote the Grandfather of Metal:
Ozzy Osbourne wrote:“All that stuff about heavy metal and hard rock, I don't subscribe to any of that. It's all just music. I mean, the heavy metal from the Seventies sounds nothing like the stuff from the Eighties, and that sounds nothing like the stuff from the Nineties. Who's to say what is and isn't a certain type of music?”
If it's good enough for Ozzy, it's good enough for me.
