Alan Bajramovic and Lyzz Foster in the finals of the BAO 2013. Lyzz and her Daemons (5th ed book) vs. Alan’s Imperial Guard and Space Wolves. 1750pts, for all the marbles, both players undefeated!

Those were some hot dice rolls. Despite re-roll successful saves, her Pink Her Pink made a lot of saves and answered back, inflicting a lot of wounds. Screamers decimated Alan's firebase.

Lyzz and Alan both had solid game plans and played their armies well. Luck had a huge factor on the outcome. She won this game without using her Blood Thirster (died after being intercepted top of turn 3), how insane is that?

Congratulations Lyzz!

Congratz to both players. Looks like an epic final round, pitting two opponents with tactical skill and great sportsmanship against each other.

Love the look of those daemons! Great looking paint schemes. (Anybody have any better pictures?)

edit: I should add, I love the batrep format here. Great idea having between turn reports from each player. Very instructive.

Congrats to Liz! Looked like a great final match.

I'll second the appreciation on the between turn interview format. Very welcome addition to your batreps.

Anybody have the probability of making those saves in this game? It almost seems inhuman.

21 shots from horrors. 4's to hit and 4's to wound and 17 wounds.

14 wounds on horrors that have to reroll their saves and only 3 die.

12 more saves on horrors and only two die.

At the very least this has to show that competitive 40k is an illusion. It's a dice game and when the dice roll like this, there is nothing anyone can do.

Each player was 6-0. It's not as if she lucked out once this game and won the tournament. There are plenty of other factors at work.

40k of course isn't balanced as a competitive game, and nobody claims as such. You however, have answered your own question- there is nothing anyone can do to change it.

On a more relative note, is anyone actually surprised that SW/IG and Daemon Flamer/Screamer spam swept the tourney?

Yah Reece clearly has quite an attachment to the belt of reeceerrrRUSS! Haha

And to those saying the dice won lizz the game clearly don't understand competitive dice games or even poker. Skill gets you most of the way but you need luck to take all them marbles. Watch WSoP sometime, the best players don't win every time. To me that's how 40k is, Allan MIGHT(not saying is) be a better player, but both have a ton of skill. So it came down to who gets a little luckier.

Reece I seriously love your batrep format. The in between round commentary was so dope too.

I knew Daemon Flamer/Scream spam was a strong contender for top place, but I would have never expected it would be one without Fate Weaver, Plague Bearers (durable scoring units) and smaller squads of Flamers. Lyzz crafted her list well and played is masterfully. Her list trades durability for offense, mobility, and flexibility. She capitalize on the objective placement and reserve deep strikes. Rather than landing Pink Horrors and Screamers close to Alan's gunline, she places them farther back, run, spread out, and reduce effects of Large Blasts.

Alan also played an army with reserve elements. 8 combi-plas is extremely nasty and devastating against key units. I'm surprised he didn't field any flyers, Colossus, or Manticores. I can see the Sabre Laz being a better alternative to flyers and for objective purposes. Perhaps the Griffon was chosen in case of rare instance of friendly fire. Not too overpowering, but just enough.

I feel for Alan on this one it sounded almost as if he was removed from play by the dice gods. Dont get me wrong Lyzz was a sound player but if they accounts of the saves were accurate then she wasnt just rolling above odds she was redefining them.

14 saves with re-rolls and only 3 die.
14 saves with re-rolls kills on average almost 5 terminators let alone 3 4+ horrors. Which was statistically enough to kill 11 horrors.

The crazy part is the dice were crazy the entire game and not just in that particular combat. 21 pink horror shots causing 17 wounds is a little absurd too haha. Good report and I feel for Alan on this one. There is only so much you can do in a dice based game. I have never ran the saber's looks like they do pretty well.

I don't think people are complaining and saying 'she only won because of the dice'. I think they are saying 'man I wish that game had slightly more regular dice, or that both sides had gotten some luck from the dice gods, that would have been an amazing game between two obviously very skilled players.'

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

I can't take credit for the video completely, Vidar (on our team) was the creator of it, I just gave them some basic instructions and edited the video. It came out quite cool! It slowed the game down but both players wanted to do it and I think it was worth it as it allowed everyone else to get a feel for what a championship game is like and hear the players' thoughts, etc. I think it was better than streaming the game as it is quick and gets the idea of what was happening across very well. Glad you all liked it! We will definitely be doing it again and probably implement a lot of this into our normal video bat reps.

Just to touch on the dice issue, Alan used her dice for a turn and when he rolled them it was all 1's and 2's! hahaha, it was just her day, her dice were red hot. She's a smart player too (plays in tournaments all the time in our area, she is legit and a looooooong time Daemon player). She earned that win playing through some very, very good players the entire way through.

I do love the belt! hahaha, it came out so cool. We had her stand up and put the belt on in front of everyone else there, too, so she definitely got to soak up the glory she deserved!

I don't think (well I hope) that no one was suggesting the dice were funky, just that she had ridiculous luck. Give them a rematch in your store (unless they traveled a long way to get to the BAO), and hope for more even luck. I'm sure lots of people would love to see a game between these two players which doesn't have 3 horrors dying to forced re-roll saves/almost every shot hitting kind of thing.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

It happens, played a GK player at a tourny on the weekend, dude had no dice with him so he was using mine he was tabled by turn 3. He had a lot of psycannons, 4 of which were twinlinked by prescince shooting at a land raider of mine of all of those dice that hit (it was a lot) not one 6 (over 2 turns) in there, yet my assault cannon shots and snap shots were on fire!.

That's what Allan gets touching tainted chaos daemon dice haha heresy gets you nowhere. And yah that's pretty funny, I always let opponents use my dice after they get suspiciously hot, usually to the same effect, they roll so bad they don't want to use them anymore haha.

I thought it was a great way to have the battle report play out. Was interesting to see what both players of that caliber think of on a turn by turn basis.

I am just confused by the IG/SW list. Those Combi Plasma wolf guard are an oddity to me. Did they just walk around? Or was a Drop Pod missing from them in the army list. I didn't see a third pod on the table.

But either way thanks again for putting on this tournament Reecius. I wasn't there, but man is it fun to read about the lead up and the tournament itself!

The lists were quickie summaries. IIRC the WG had a pod; remember they arrived late and Alan intended for them to wipe out a Horror unit on arrival.

Lyzz did seem to have some great luck, but remember we're all suffering from hindsight bias right now; the extraordinary rolls stick in the memory and get talked about afterward. The average ones (and undoubtedly some below-average) get forgotten about afterward, in favor of remembering the few spectacular ones.

I did feel a little bit bad for Lyzz while Reece was trying to congratulate her and Alan was still complaining about being beaten by the dice gods. He did a good job of saying it with a smile, but it wasn't exactly graceful. I can't point the finger too hard, though; I know I've vented my share of complaints after a tough loss. It's a hard reaction to suppress.

QFT! He had stayed pretty positive throughout but it appeared in that final scene it had finally gotten to him some and he slipped a little but it was a tough loss after a 3 day event. Some players would of broken on turn 2 or 3 and called it. He stuck it out pretty good despite the odds.
