What do you least like to play against from the marine codex?

As far as "deadly" goes, there is nothing that can survive 10 kitted-out Sternguard Drop-podding next to it (assuming the dice Gods do not laugh at you of course)

I said the terminators, but I don't think any single unit makes the horror show so horrible. I think that truly brutal armies are built from effective combinations of units.

Yeah, you might as well change 'other' to TFC. I'm pretty sure that's what most people who choose that are going to be thinking. I certainly know I was.

+1

with so many options I cant believe the truely unique and possibly best unit was not among them.

The torrent it can put out for 100 pts is awesome. Plus, it has "no cover" ammo, which is great against people to trying to kill me with those silly harlequins.

Sternguard in a pod. IMO they are the most destructive force in the codex. Load them up with combi weaps and laugh as just about any squad straight disappears. Especially if you attach Lysander to the unit. It might not be the most cost efficient. But I think it's the killiest.

Edit:sternguard chuchle politely at the TFC t7. But 3 TFC for the same points as the stern are no joke.

Maybe, but you just used a 125+ point squad and a drop pod to kill a 100 point artillery gun. Effective/deadly are two truly different questions. If you just want stuff dead, I'd go with TH/SS terminators.

Call me mr.strange but my most competitive unit always seems to be an ironclad in drop pod. It / they always do well for me if I am honest.

Another vote for TFC here. I find it a lot more forgiving when the dice aren't with you. It never lets me down and it reliably kills it's points worth, at least for me, YMMV.

I have always wondered how effective that would be... Im guessing ur tank hunting? What weapons do you run it with?

Could be just me but 2 shots from plasma/rocket etc and thunder fire is normaly toast, I do love the ruin cover bump up it grants tho and points wise it's hard to say no, I still think sternguard to kill almost anything but can't believe no one thinks scouts with tellion behind a defence line..... That's 2+ cover and a sniper las cannon or quad gun thats better than an assassin ? Tempted?

Personally I would say the TH/SS termies. For the cost you can never go wrong with the TFC.

It's an artillery piece that has a profile of heavy blast 4. So it fires 4 small templates. These templates can be of 3 different types, one of which ignores cover.

Another call for the Thunderfire Cannon here. The poll would probably be more useful to you if you added it to it.

I used 315 points to kill 2 thunderfires ;p. cause I always run the sterns in 10 man groups. Just an FYI that's why I said the sterns aren't the most point efficient, but they can kill more things than a thunderfire.

Oh right. I keep forgetting about the combat squad thing. I don't usually do that with BA sternguards.

And don't get me wrong. The TFC is the single most amazingly priced cost efficient versatile item in our codex. I love that thing so much in 6th edition. Just saying a thunderfire can't kill a T9 iron arm hive tyrant in 1 round of shooting.

True, but it can kill all the little gribblies in the world without too much trouble.

Also, because the TFC comes with a free techmarine, it's probably getting a 3+ cover save against whatever big guns you might want to use to kill a multi-wound T7 model.

Very true, but how is it going to do against 20 rapid fire poison 2+ that don't care about armor because of volume? Just saying. If we're talking efficiency the TFC wins it in a runaway. If we're talking the best most dead Killy scary unit in the codex. It's clearly sternguard.

I guess we're operating on a different continuum, then. For 300 points I can have 10 sternguard in a pod or 3 TFCs...I think 3 TFCs will kill more. Don't get me wrong, I love sternguard, but I'm just saying they're probably only 2nd best.

I took points out of it and went with the best single unit. I was qualifying best as what kills the most and has the biggest range of things it will kill. Like I've been saying point for point nothing in the codex beats the TFC in my opinion. But the one thing in the codex I least enjoy seeing across from me is a sternguard squad with combis/specials in a pod. Very hard to mitigate they're destruction by just "spreading out"

I think the problem here is how we're each defining, 'best' differently. By your definition of best, I could make a unit, and kit it out with a ludicrous number of upgrades so much so that it's an absolutely monster, but I've made it so expensive that it's not worth taking as it's so inefficient for its points. Yet it would still be classed as best because it is such a powerful unit, and you're ignoring that it is horrendously overpriced, as you say yourself, you're taking points out of it.

I think that the definition of best from everyone else's perspective is, 'the most points efficient unit'. I'm not saying that Sternguard are inefficient, they're just not quite as efficient as a Thunderfire Cannon.

I must say,... there are 2 kinds of SM units that i find dead killy,...

i fully kitted out squad of assault termies with either a librarian in termie armor or a chaplain in termie armor that come storming out of a land raider...

But a fully kitted out Sternguard squad with meltaguns that drop on turn 1 and take out your biggest armoured vehicle that contains your hq... i find that to be the most annoying game changing unit of the SM's...

For me, I was torn between thunderhammer termies, and sternguard. I went with the termies, because I feel sternguard are a bit "One and done" in terms of their special combiweapons. They are not bad after that with their sternguard special bolter's, but they lose a lot of what makes them amazing turn one. Plus, in kill points, they hand one away with the drop pod.

But they are still amazing. TH/SS termies are just marginally more amazing
