Historicon: Special Lieutenant Dick Winters miniature
Here’s a first look at the special miniature we have made for Historicon this year – Lieutenant Dick Winters. Made famous as the main character in the TV show Band of Brothers, Major Winters was the highly decorated commander of ‘Easy Company’, part of the US 101st Airborne Division, during World War II.
As the theme of this year’s Historicon is ‘Large Wars, Small Soldiers’ and it’s a landmark 30th anniversary for America’s premier wargaming show, we knew we had to produce something special.
We found reference to Lt Winters’ dog tags and decided these would make a great display base for the model with the upper dog tag also holding the show details. Of course, for those wishing to field the model in games of Bolt Action he can easily be placed on a 25mm round base of your choice.
Our model is sculpted by Wojtek and depicts him marshalling his troops during the textbook assault on the German guns positions at Brecourt Manor.
For more information on attending the show and getting your hands on this splendid miniature, look no further than here!
I really like this model

Italieri? Hmmm.. like others have posted, wouldn't have been my first choice for a plastic kit producer.
Apparently some of their more recent kits are perfectly respectable (I haven't really ever bought anything from them personally), but they have always been towards the budget end of the scale. I would have been a lot more comfortable with one of the asian brands; Tamiya, Hasegawa, Trumpeter, Dragon etc.
However, this may come down to logistics. And, if Italieri have already been doing the Warlord plastics then perhaps it makes perfect sense on that front.

The big names from the East are perhaps a bit too far out of league for the likes of Warlord, as much as I want that to happen myself. The idea of Tamiya or Trumpeter doing 1:56 scale kits for Warlord..

In between this thread and a different one complaining about breaking the PSC Germans because of their supposed lack of durability, I am beginning to wonder if the majority of wargamers don't have hands, and instead have Hammerstein-style massive rock fists which they are unable to use with any subtlety, and have to swing wildly about smashing any vehicles and miniatures that aren't solid lumps of resin or metal?

I think it's fair to expect that wargaming models that are designed to be constantly handled should be significantly more durable than display models which are created to be painted and then put on a shelf and displayed.

The Italeri release specifically states wargaming kits, so I'm assuming they'll be much like the current plastic T34, M3, and 251/1.

Fair enough, the level of detail on Tamiya and whatnot is amazing, but yeah, the parts would be too delicate and fragile, this is already the case with their 1:48 tank and vehicle kits.

There are a number of WW2 historical games scaled at 20mm precisely because it gives the opportunity to use the wide range of 1/72 scale plastic kits out there, rather than the producer having to create their own dedicated miniature line, and as it represents a cheaper buy-in for collectors. I can possibly see some kind of issue with wooden boat kits, that have all of the rigging and things like that, but not injection moulded plastic that has been glued together.
Anyway! Last I will say about this, but I really can't see what the problem is..

Beard guy??
I got a couple of Italeri 1:48 88s, apart from one error in the instructions, the quality of the kit and detail was pretty good, plus half the price of Warlords metal version, so interested to see where this partnership leads...

Haha, you should tell that to my brother, who plays 1/72 20mm Battlegroup games - and he's spent about 10 hours assembling a single Katysuha whose rocket launcher frame is about 80 individual parts all ranging in size from 1mm to 12mm long... I've never seen him angrier
There's just a tremendous difference in kits designed for display pieces - normal scale model kits - and kits designed for gaming - basically unassembled/unpainted toys. Since Italeri is specifically doing "1/56 wargaming scale" kits I would hope they are designed like Games Workshop and current Warlord plastics - that is, like unassembled/unpainted toys. I do _not_ want to game with high quality scale model kits.

Yes, oh my god. Don't the instructions show a picture of the sprue and a flame? We like complaining about hot water to fix finecast, resin, and pvc plastic, but imagine if we were told to melt the plastic and basically sculpt our own model, haha

One of their painters has a habit of giving every mini he paints a beard, while I can understand that soldiers don't always shave, with this guy it's a wee bit absurd. Automatically Appended Next Post: Nice, that's my first Tamiya 1:48 tank project, complete with appliqué armour. I also have their Sherman and a StuG III.

Ah, that'll be it then. I'm not to fond of the vehicles that Warlord produces as they're a bit small for my tastes. Years of 40k I suppose has ruined my perception of scale and pushed me toward erring for larger models. ...That and if I'm spending £20 on a kit I don't want it to be the size of a matchbox.

I do wargame with model kit vehicles instead of GW bricks and so far no problems.
Also Tamiya markets some Italeri kits under their own brand here in Japan so they must consider them up to their own quality standards to do so.

I agree with Pacific.
Manchu wrote:I for one do not want to war game with model kit vehicles. They are for displaying only.
They work fine. It's true they have thinner plastic than a "toy" wargame model like the GW stuff, but you just need to take appropriate care in moving them around.
20mm used to be the scale for 20th century small action games, because it took advantage of the huge range of 1/72 and 1/76 scale kits on the market (as well as infantry figures.)
I had a whole army of Vietnam in 20mm, including helicopters, spotter and attack planes, M113s, and tanks. They looked great, worked well on a large table, and I never got any breakages.
Bolt Action's mistake was to use 1/56 for their vehicles. If they had gone with 1/48, there was already a good range of WW2 models on the market from Tamiya and other companies.

Looks like the details are a bit thicker plastic, so it's probably a bit more sturdy than the traditional models. It's probably a good deal, Warlord knows what they want in a gaming model and Italeri can churn out a whole lot of them.
However, actually the more interesting thing is to see how the marketing and prices go, too. Italeri has their own marketing network, which might make it huge for BA, if traditional model stores pick BA up and the BA models start showing up at toy store models department. It's very cunning for Warlord to seek this kind of deal

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |
