I guess maybe the magic-bow unit are going to be an elite unite from Avelorn. Which makes sense, since we have specialised units from all the other provinces.

Some thoughts I posted on another forum: I like the infantry more and more... but the phoenix models less (well fire is ok but ice is terrible). I guess the ice one is supposed to have ice crystals growing on it, but they look silly to me.

I'd much rather have seen (maybe we still will?) mini-dragon riders or eagle riders than a phoenix. I've been collecting High Elves since the mid 1990s with 4th edition WHFB, and dragons and eagles have been a part of the fluff since at least then. Since then, a phoenix as a creature has to my knowledge never been mentioned. I thought the name Phoenix King and associated imagery were because the prospective Phoenix King has to walk through the Fires of Asuryan and emerge unscathed. So why invent something new (and silly-looking) like this when we have a long heritage of Caledorian Dragon Princes who used to ride dragons, elf-friendly Eagles, and tameable monsters like Griffons aplenty in the mountains of Ulthuan?

But you see, magic flying boats are fine as there's no such thing so I have no preconceived notions of how it should look or work.

But I know how birds work.

And I know how animal-pulled carts work.

So as soon as I look at this thing my minds immediately says 'WRONG!' Which it would not do for a bird-less flying boat.

The word is: No new sculpts at this time, perhaps in the future.

I think it would look way better painted that way... as it is, the snowflakes are just too cheesy. Although flowers might be, too

They do look a lot better without the chairs on top!

GW haven't re-done the core of most (any?) army releases, just adding extra units, so it's no surpirse there aren't new spearmen or archer sculpts. And yet, that's what will keep many people from starting an army (imo)- they have to have tons of the older sculpts as their core.

What's interesting is that there's a rumor of a box which can make Archers, Sea Guard, or Spearmen.

Personally though, I'm hoping they just man up and make the Lothern Sea Guard from IoB available in a boxed format. $25 for 10 with 3 Command and keep the set of 5 available.

I love it when Kanluwen and I can put aside our differences and talk sense. This would be a great idea for GW to do, although $16 for 5 is too much. They are monopose 2 piece models. Now while the sculpts are nice, the most I'd pay for them is $2ea, with a little extra for the command models.

Same with the Swordmasters, granted for those models being special choices I would understand $2.50ea.

Also, I'm all for a combi set of archers/spearmen as long as they look as nice as Dark Elf Corsairs look. Even though I already own 2 units of 25 spearmen, if new sculpts came out I'd shelf my current ones and buy new ones if they looked better.

Hmm, just looking at the new pics, with the pheonix's. Look to the bottom right and you see some red painted knights. They look like dragon princes BUT could be drake riders, but prob just dragon princes painted red.

They look like the old Dragon Princes from around 4th edition era; it's hard to make them out but I'm about 85% sure.
Edit (on closer look the horse barding looks a little different)

I don't recognise them. I'm fairly sure they're not old models (see below) and they're noticeably different to the current plastics.

These were the original Dragon Prince metals...

I'm pretty sure those are extras that you can skip. The fire phoenix uses the same basic wings.

Edit: Actually, no they don't. I'm guessing the wings are two part, but you can always use the fire version.

Sculptors often use the same underlying model and just sculpt details on top of it. You can look through many models in GW's range and see that they used the same base model for both, even though they are 1 piece. A random example that was the first one I looked at, the WE Wardancers are 5 different models, but you can see they actually only have 3 different sets of legs, so some of them were made off the same base model, even though they are only single piece models.

Overall, I'm not overly impressed with the new HE. Most of the models just look way too busy. It seems GW has forgotten that a model can be simple and look good and rather err on the side of bling bling and when all else fails, add a bit more bling.

That's not to say anything of the absurdity of the Sky chariots... really. The Eagles pulling the chariots look ok, but I personally prefer the LOTR eagles.

The only model I'm really liking is the fire phoenix.

My main issue is with the Shadow Warriors (et al) using their bows to launch their swords. Nice enough models, but no real clue what they are supposed to be doing.

Although I like the chariot, I think it is a silly idea that could have been better. . .thought through.

As has been mentioned, the sheer amount of stuff that's gonna be in the Eagle Chariot is staggering. I'd happily buy it for the plastic Eagle alone, the extra stuff is icing on the cake.

Valid point, but, if I may play devil's advocate for a moment, even the female heads of Jes Goodwin's Dark Eldar Warriors/Wyches look kinda like slightly feminine men with women's hairstyles. To me, anyhow.

To be honest, I've never worried too much about the tranny-ism of Elf models, I've always just assumed that men look more feminine and women look more masculine after many generations of them having equal roles in society.

That said, there are some Elf models that do look distinctly female, so meh.

I do dislike painting female models because it's so much harder to make the faces look "ok". A male face, if you bugger it up, it usually just looks more craggy or like he's seen more battles or he has a slightly stronger chin/forehead or whatever, female faces when you bugger them up always look terrible.
