Human Auxiliary to the Empire

Washington DC

I don't know if GW is trying to put out Easter eggs for a new race but there a couple of things I noticed. In the 3rd edition release of the BRB there was a section titled "Other dangerous aliens", in this picture two of the aliens, were each featured in a separate codex within 3 years of the release of the codex (necron: (codex: necrons) and kroot (codex: Tau)). With the revival of this section with a picture under "The Alien Menace" pg. 198 6th edition BRB, I kind of shrugged off the fact that we saw 3 of the same xenos that were in the 3rd edition BRB. But the Hrud Nocturnal Warrior, kind of sparked my interest. Having dismissed this section since the release of the BRB in the summer of 2012, my interest was sparked again with the release of the Tau Empire Codex, my interest was sparked once again by the fluff. I found it interesting that the Hrud had earned an honourable mention in the timelines found both in the BRB and the tau empire codex. Furthermore, I found it interesting that the Hrud were mentioned more than once in the fluff being one of 2 alien races (the other being the Orks) that are constantly encountered by the Tau who prove next to impossible to assimilate into the Empire. I also found it interesting that the Hrud are mentioned as interacting with the humans outside of the Tau. Does anyone else have the sneaking suspicion that GW is dropping dimes as to who might be the next race to receive a new set of rules outside of the armies already listed?

The rumour is that there will be an allies supplement. I imagine this will include some alien races to ally with, so you may be right

Hrud are pretty cool, only problem is they are almost completely spaceborne as a species as far as I know. I do like the idea though, reading about them in Flight of The Eisenstein was pretty interesting. Unfortunately they also remind me of mechanical Tyranids, instead of biomorphing they just augment the crap out of themselves. WHo knows, Hrud allies or even just the miniatures would probably be cool as hell to paint.

Dont know about a new race but i could see an ally codex, containing obscure SM chapters, rogue traders, and maybe even

I was just reading Kill Team and they mention a couple Hrud in that book hanging out in a bar.

Someone mentioned that book came out when Tau were released, maybe Hrud were planned all along? Hopefully they were not planned as part of the Tau army since they just released a bunch of stuff and there were no Hrud anywhere to be seen.

I'd love to see an allies codex. It would be a wonderful way to add some variety to the game and give tabletop presence to those little races and factions that quite don't merit having their own full codex. It would also allow GW to test what ideas are popular; if for example people would really like Hrud or Demiurg they could later develop them into a full faction.

I wonder though, with 16 armies already in the game, what other niches are there to fill?

We have:
Fast armies: Dark eldar
Slow and purposefull armies: Necrons (Questionably, because they have fast stuff too)
Elite shooty armies: Grey knights, space marines, e.x
Elite assaulty armies: Blood angels, templars
Horde melee: Orks, tyranids, Daemons
Horde shooty: Guard
Tankhorde: Guard
Psychic choirs: Grey knights, eldar, Tyranids
Monstrous spam: Daemons, tyranids
Varied power armour armies.

The only thing I can think of that has yet to be explored, is an elite...tank...army? Which...now that I think of it, could be really cool. Scoring-Walker-army. Yes yes.

If anyone could do a great allies expansion, I would put my money on forgeworld, besides it would be a nice change for their sculptors after all the HH Pa stuff

Thats exactly the problem, you have the shooters, the assaulters, the tank drivers, the horde armys, any thing else would just be doubling up at this point.

Really want to see rogue traders put in. i tossed some ideas around for a rogue trader captain a long time ago.

Something along the lines of, if you have a rogue trader in your army, you may take more then one ally and dont need to bring an HQ for that ally. So long as the rogue trader is alive, all allys are battle brothers.

Genuinely curious though, can anyone think of an army style, that has not been done before now? There has to be something

Horde-vehicles, like a ork buggy style army, but obviously not orks?

Elite vehicles, with only a handful of walking unit's, and the tech-crew's to support them?

An army that focusses on immobile turret's, so that one feels like they are playing one of those tower defence games on the web? This sounds fun to me

Anything else?

the only problem is with the current game types its really impossible to introduce a vehicle based army with minimal troops.

I don't play fantasy but I like the idea of the ogre army.......some sort of army where troops are like 2 or 3w but more expensive perhaps?

I think Ad Mech could make a sufficiently different army, and has a strong theme and presence in the lore.

OH just got one of those thing, what are they called, its like a thought with pictures....AN IDEA!

An army i want to see is a plauge/zombie army. not like necrons, which are kinda like the undead of the 40k world, mixed with the terminator.

But full blown zombies. Troop choices would be like plagued/zombie marines, slow movement, low BS, but high strength, and lots of wounds like 3+ wounds.

vehicles would be sort of the same thing, they could cause damage over time effect stuff like that.

To many unpainted models to count.

AFAIK, the Hrud also made some intriguing appearances in the CSM and DA codices. Don't have them around, but will check as soon as possible.

However, I'm skeptical that GW is going to release a new race anytime soon. Forgeworld maybe (they're already doing so with the Adeptus Mechanicus in their Horus Heresy books), mainstream GW, hardly so. Just look at the belated update of their Sisters of Battle line and the strain the increased rate of releases is putting on their production lines. Even if they wanted to create a new faction out of nothing, they're just not ready for the task.

Just check Codex: Chaos Space Marines. GW has already found a way to cash in the zombie fad

Sorry if this was already answered. The Zoats were a combat critter genetically engineered by the Tyranids. Not like the normal way Tyranids do it, but actually genetically engineered like the Emperor did the Primarchs and Monsanto does with your vegetables.

Zoats were intelligent, and any left behind on planets started developing their own cultures, etc. Apparently, when out of contact with Tyranid overlords too long, they lost control of them. Some Zoats are even Psykers. All this is according to the original W40k-RT book. The Tyranids even fed them special chow called "Zoatabix" (not kidding!).

But to the original question, while GW hasn't officially hinted at new races that I know of, if you look at their entire line of products you'll see that certain high level GW employees are pushing for it. For example, in Battlefleet Gothic you have official rules and ship minis for what are basically re-named Squats. Forget what they're called? Demiurge or something. Then you have multiple occurrences of Hrud which are not only space-faring. They've been mentioned several times as burrowing underground on planets and like Orks are considered an "infestation". Most of the rumors I've heard are they are the 40k version of "Skaven". Most of the Hrud stuff I've heard actually comes from FFG stuff, so is not 'canon', but there are canon references to the Hrud around.

Don't hold your breath though. Unless GW is desperate, adventurous or gets some new high level direction that wants to experiment, we'll probably never see the Squats or Skaven in 40k in any incarnation...or any other alien race.
