I was wondering, there's so many different units in the codex, many if them fulfilling similar roles so what single unit is the most effective, versatile or competitive? Particularly against things like guard where you need to overwhelm them fast or things like GK where you get insta killed in cc

Isn't that really two different units you need then?
I love the sight of my opponent's face when I field a BT, however. High mobility, high initiative, AP2 and a bucket load of attacks makes the greater daemon of Khorne outstanding.

Scarbrand, Rage and Hatred are fantastic, he's cheaper then a Bloodthirster as well. You should always be charging so giving these rules to you're opponent as well shouldn't matter.

I agree... i will never start a game without 2 bloodthirsters in it.
in my last game I played, 2 bloodthirsters (warlord with a greater reward and the other with no upgrades)and 2 soulgrinders (with phlegm) took out 1200pts of tau in 1250pt game...
those 4 models turned a solid loss into a triumphant win. bloodthirsters are definitely my favourite unit in the daemons codex..
so much so that my user name is that of a bloodthirster. (mentioned in the old codex)
I love bloodthirsters!!!!!!!!!!!!

Until the Chaos gods decides to send him home from Daemonic Instability~
But seriously Bloodthirsters are soo good for the buck that I think every list needs him.
Fateweaver also helps a lot with that critical reroll that you need.
From now on I'm probably going to take both as a staple of any list 2000+.

If I had to pick just 1 unit, I'd go with a Level 3 Lord of Change with the Eternal Blade and greater gift. He is just nuts in combat and has decent shooting to boot. Psychic powers like Forewarning and Prescience makes him so good, but the kicker power is Precognition. That power is just broken on a FMC.
And if you should happen to have a Grimoire as well....

For all the complaints surrounding the Daemons codex, I don't think anyone can pick at the internal balance. Essentially every unit is loved and has something to do. (FAQ pending on the Burning Chariot)
I think Flesh Hounds are a winner, as is the Seeker Calvacade, both for delivering brutal amounts of killiness on dirt-cheap platforms. And the Greater Daemons are all magnificent in their own ways.

I equipped him with the Eternal Blade in 1 game against Space Wolves. Then I got lucky and got the Warlord Trait that insta-kills. Cast Prescience on him and he killed 3 2+/3++ Thunderwolf Lords in just 1 combat! That's almost 800-pts of characters in just 1 combat! Nuts, I say!

From the sounds of it Tzeentch is really strong, fateweaver's going to be an auto include for me just so I don't lose from a bad warp storm roll plus he's a very solid character with great synergy. I'll probably run him near some tzeentch oblits or have them deepstrike near him for that sweet 4++ re rollable (on ones) on a two wound model thats going to be great.

Biomancied up GUO.
There's something rather satisfying in taking a lascannon hit to the face, and treating it like an annoying fly to be ignored.
Granted he is feth-me-with-a-barstool slow, but it's still hilarious

GUO is sick with iron arm, but I prefer my Iron Arm Slaanesh DP.
Huge point sink but in one game she had Iron arm, Warp Speed, psykic shriek, Lash of Despair, Eternal Sword. and ID from Warlord traits. and wings so it can leave a GUO in the dust
I dont think i will ever get that lucky on randoms again

probably going to run a list with about 40 bloodletters, 20 horrors a keeper of secrets, 2 demon princes and maybe a blood thirster with nurgle marine allies and a helldrake in a 2k + list and under that I'll just do hordes of letters with heralds and a baledrake for support.

From the games I've played Seekers of Slaanesh, no question about it. No upgrades at all in the unit. With their speed they pick the fights they want to be in. I put the Grimore buff on them if I can and watch them murder.

Oblits aren't Daemons of any god though, so no rerolling 1s.
They get a +1 to invul and that's about it.

I am most fond of the Seekers currently. Watching them charge in and just tear things to pieces for their low point cost is tremendous. Second would be Fiends of Slaanesh for their -5 init on charge which gives them great advantages against other close combat oriented units.

Soul Grinder. The most points effective unit in the book I think. I never play with less than 3 and they always perform admirably. Unlike the over costed Daemon Prince.

Biomancy GUO. It's just disgusting.
Followed closely by lord of change and bloodletter.
They were clever, giving us 4 brilliant greater daemons, and then making sure we can only take 1 without sacrificing heralds xD

+1 for bloodthirsters. In a game I had a few weeks ago, mine chewed through 2 mobs of ork boyz and a mob of burna boyz. I plan on buying a second as soon as I can

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

A few people seem to be saying GUO, while I do agree he can be a beast to kill with Iron Arm, really protecting your slay the warlord VP but I find him so slow, never used him in a game but played against him a lot of times, not once has he got into combat with me as he is so slow. Last game I did not bother to even shoot him and he was basically all my opponent had left on the table.
Blood thrister are beast for sure, until they get enfeebled and my DP with grimoure and Iron arm smash attacks him and my opponent throws a strop after he is insta killed...
I would say IME and for my army list my daemon princes are king, yes they are 990points worth usually of three models but they have yet to fail me, 15 plus games 15 plus wins!.
Either that or greater rewards, they are blooming useful overall first I wasnt sold and done a list with none, after I sat down and read they properly they are auto include....

Combine that with grimoure for a 2 plus invul save and mark of tzeentch for re rolling ones, and prescience as bs3 isnt all that great, perfect until they run out of your max range or get into CC,

Yeah, he is slow, but you can counteract that, by not using him unsupported. My favourite use of him, is run everything melee in your army towards the front line, and then deepstrike the GUO behind the enemy army. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, the enemy tend's to panic, split fire, and kill neither side of the army coming towards them, meaning both, or at least one, get to charge.
GUO to me, is like the old monolith. Plonk him down, and basically say "This area of the table is mine now. No questions."

Luckly I have not had to contend with that but with my current daemon list it wouldnt worry me too much. Plus deepstriking your GUO means no iron arm, enfeeable and smash time for my DP's!!
