Subject: Re:The BlackWatch Highlanders, Space Wolves and Lizardmen!- Blog Updated:29/05/2014
Hi Wolf, sorry about the late response, here are links to my personal blog and Dakka Blog, I currently have DKoK, Death Guard, Blood Angels, Orks, and Tau, and plan on doing SOB, Adaptus Machanicus, Eldar, Praetorian and maybe a 2nd SM not sure what though, maybe Imperial fists, or I may do a couple of pre heresy armies, my DKoK has some Napoleonic flavours (you can see them on my Blogs) and my Praetorians will have a highland unit in it, similar to yours, but with Pith helmets, using colonial highlanders as the basis for the conversions, the reason for so many armies, besides the fact I love doing them, is because of the funny scale, I will be able supply the armies for both sides of any game, also the DKoK and Praetorians will be able to face off in a Victorian Sci Fi type scenario, sort of WWI Sci Fi, Germans v Brits in red uniforms, though of doing a French army as well, have the figs but low on the list, let me know what you think.

Subject: Re:The BlackWatch Highlanders, Now with Kroot !- Blog Updated:05/05/2014
So I thought I'd start off with my visit to the Royal Armouries in Leeds, this was so much fun, so many interesting weapons and armour.
I spoilered this for those that may not be overly interested in my trip there
Spoiler:
I think I'd start with the war Elephant as it was a very impressive creature !
There was also this really cool triple barreled pistol thing on display and thought it would make an awesome conversion for something ?
I was also treated to a demonstration of how mobile Knights can be in their armour with a few combat scenarios played out, it was great !
I finished up the day trying out an arcade sniper game and managed to score 95 out of 100 which I was happy with
So back to the models, I have managed to finish up the first half of my DKoK Kill Team, they are fully painted and based and just waiting for some good weather to get a coating of varnish.
I am really happy with how they all look over all and can't wait to get some funds in to get the rest of the team in and built and painted
Up next is my Space Wolves Kill Team, I've just started painting them up so excuse the black parts. Though I kind of like the idea that as I paint more parts of them the more the detail will be revealed which is kind of a cool idea.
I am trying to go for more original colour scheme but just with my own spin on it, for example the primary armour colour is my own mix of colours to have a more cold grey version of Space Wolves Grey.
I have also started on the Dauntless ! I really can't wait to get this model finished so I think I'll be balancing my work load between my Space Wolves and the Battleship.
I also have a sneak peak of my Lizardmen warband I am building up for a sort of Mordheim type of campaign me and a friend are planning on playing.
I also recognize my pictures are the best so I will be aiming to improve on my photography skills for my next update as well as I want the photos to really show off my models. I also have the Broadside in the works for my Kroot (Tau) kill Team which I hope to get some paint on soon and I have to say I am so glad I finally got my hands on one of the new models of the Broadside as its such a beautiful thing !
So that was quick update expect more soon !
As always comments and critiques are always welcome !
Cheers
Wolf

I've been messing around with my camera and its settings to try and get a better picture to show you guys. I know there is nothing worse than horrible photos !
So I've taken this test image for you guys to have a look at and see what you think.
Is this photo an improvement from my others ? What else could I do to help make them better ?
So I have returned with an update for you my good fellows,
And it smells a lot like dogs, well wolves to be precises, however first things first a present I got from my Mum from her trip to Ireland.
A Cold Drake based from the Lord of the Rings background stuff, it comes from a miniature factory they visited on her holiday there and I'm totally excited about making this up and getting it painted ! So you should expect updates of my progress this chilly chappy too
And keeping in tune with the cold theme I have started with, onto my space Wolves, now I was hoping to take progress shots every now and again but I never really got round to it as I did a little painting here and a little there and never really got my camera out at any point. I know Bad wolf (slaps hand) but hey they are almost done now just need to finishing basing them and they are ready for the field of honor and glory !
I'll show you all the Grey Hunters and the Long fangs first This guy is the most skilled of my Grey hunters in my Space Wolves Kill Team hence his use of the Plasma Pistol. I just need to finish up his eye pieces which I have seemed to have forgotten about... Woopsie !
This crazed Bezerker of a Grey hunter is my second favorite, I think its the dynamic pose I managed to get with him and the motion in the arms really makes you think he's just swigning those things around like a mad man.
Aaand the Long Fang Brothers
Finally the Leader of my Space Wolves Kill Team, Thorin StormKvir, I used the new space marine librarian kit as my base and went from there adding several space wolf bits to him to make him look the part and I have to say I am rather pleased with how he turned out especially since this was my real first daring use of contrasting colors. Those been the blue and orange combination, I think for a first attempt at such a combination it's worked quite well and does make the model pop !
I thought I would also do a close up of his head as I wanted to show you guys the glow effect I got going on for the metal plate thing around his head, I simply watered down a light blue vallejo paint and applied it to the recesses. I then applied a sightly thicker layer to reinforce the color more.
I hope my photography is getting better for you guys, I am still noticing that the pictures are draining the shading out of the final photo, I may start taking them into Photoshop and try a little enhancing on them what do you guys think ? Any suggestions on what I could do to improve them more ?
Welll that's all folks, in the coming week or two I shall have the bases done for these guys and I'll show a few snaps of them and also of course progress on my awesome Drake ! I think I will also make a start on my Kroot Broadside and get him painted up.
So if some of that tickles your fancy well then, stay tuned
As always thanks for reading and comments, criticisms, ways to improve my models, suggestions, general chit chat (related to things in my blog of course )are allll welcome here !
It's been a while since any form of updates, Life has been all work and no play for me :( Aaaand maybe I did forget to take pictures for what I did manage to do...
So lets start off with what I finished !
The Kroot Broadside is painted up and ready fro the battlefield
I'm pretty happy with how he turned out, I think I may do a remake of him in the future when I have the funds to make him look even more 'Krooty'
Up next is the Apocalypse Battle ship, Finally got it painted up and it looks so much better than it did, which is perfect for me
I also took a break from everything Warhammer based and painted up my BattleStar Pegasus ! ( Which I use as Chaos in BFG)
For the Battlestar Pegasus I plan to add blast marks across the hull as I play games to simulate the battle damage taken over a campaign.
Now for some WIP, These following models are been made for a scenario that me and a friend of mine would like to play out.
Picture a city in ruins, smoke blowing across abandoned streets full of rubble, destroyed vehicles, bodies, the lot. Enter a general mounted on his heroic horse leading the column of his army as they march towards their new battlefield in the distance. As they march they can hear the guns in the distance. As the advance deeper into the ruins they hear explosions all around them vehicles explode men die all around him as they are ambushed in the middle of the city... A Trap !
So first up is my General,
I am using the head of the Scout Sargent character ( I forget his name) and the body is from Curious constructs. I did have a pair of legs with him too however they didn't fit on the Empire Outriders horse very well and looked out of place next to my Rough Riders. So in answer to that I have ordered the Victoria Miniatures legs which will look much better ! His Plume is from a French Grenadier head from either Perry Perry Miniatures or Victrix.
Up next are the Drummers, the men who set out the beat of the march.
The drums are also from the same kit as the plumes, French Drums, and they fit really well. The arms are a mix of random Guard arms and hands from holding chainblades or similar close combat weapons. The drum sticks are actually from a mast of an old Titanic Model I had in pieces lying around ! I knew I kept the pieces for a reason.
Finally the Banner bearers.
These guys are very bog standard, not much conversion work went into them. The biggest amount of work was taking the metal banner from the old Imperial Guard model and putting it onto the plastic arm, I did this as I preferred this banner to the other plastic Variant.
And as a little interaction with the guys following this blog I'd like to offer you an opportunity, I will be starting to model the next squad of my highlander infantry soon and will be looking for a tartan to use for their kilts that differ from the ones I have shown in this blog.
So I ask you too, send me a tartan design from your family, your own design, your favorite clan anything and I promise you it will be chosen for the next tartan on the squad's kilts. I will use as many tartan designs that I can if there are many posted
Do you mind if I ask which Outrider horse you used - I seem to remember there are three different poses? The CC legs normally fit the Outriders rather well on those, I'm hoping there is'nt an issue with the mould!
Hello there col. Gravis thanks very much for the kind words i use all the plastic outrider horses.
The problem with the legs was they made the guy look very short in comparison to my other horsemen. I think its the general posing and size of the legs. So the best option was to use the same victoria miniature legs to keep the general look consistent the torso and arms on the general are also from CC and fit fine and look great !
Ah got ya! Yeah Vic's poses are more upright, back straight, mine are intended to be in more of a charging pose, leaning forward in the saddle, the contrast would be noticeable mixing the two!
Anyway, I look forward to seeing a bit of paint on the General!

Thanks for looking everyone,
Peace out.
'General'? he looks like CO to me. actually Napoleonic era Generals wear either Tricorne or Bicorne.
^ British military in the War of 1812 (where American politicians in The Congress fell sway to the invincibility of Napoleon, led an entire country to the war against its bigger neighbour... the British Imperial forces.. any wish ot tie up the loose end led to the almost destruction of the young nation)

Hey that is true, but I am trying to keep true to the over all Highlander appearance of the army, I mean he could quite easily be the CO of this particular army instead of a general. It makes more sense to me
Speaking of the General/CO I have an update to show.
The legs and horse finally came so I was able to put him together at last. Now for his right arm I'm hoping it looks like he's holding a telescope. Does it look like one ?
Anyways Here he is
I'm going to be adding a strap of tartan cloth around his shoulder like the Senior Officers of the Highlander Regiments like this
Just come accross this thread.... looking really cool and some great ideas!
How about a unit of "fanatics" "berzerkers" all weilding the 2 handed Claymore's..... would be pretty cool IMHO.... but yeh i agree... for a personal weapon... a rapier would certainly be a more practical choice!
Subbed to this thread.. really interested to see where it goes>
Hey there MagosBiff90 thanks I've really enjoyed working on everything in this blog and there is more to come soon.
I was toying around with the idea of a sheathed rapier/sword but have been unable to find one online. If I could find one it would be put on the model in an instant !
Would you or anyone know a good place to get a correctly scaled sheathed sword from ?
Hmmm... i would think that even making your own sheathed swords would maybe be the way to go.... if you have the hilts already then its just a case of adding a sheath that could easily be made of plasticard or such other material..... the strap could then be really thin cut plastic? Would allow you to customise each one... or keep them uniform for a regular trooper and allows you to control the scale..... just a thought!
Today I have a small update for you on the General/Colonel model, I have sculpted his tartan around his shoulder I think its looking rather good.
Up next shall be him painted, I think I have found a good piece that i could use for the sheathed sword on Curious Constructs website. I'll think about ordering it and getting to work on converting it and adding it to the model.
