Does anybody know if theres an opportunity in LV to play MTG on the Sunday ? I don't have a partner for the doubles tournament and I *think* its Born of the Gods release weekend, so if there was an opportunity to crack open a few packs I would be into that.

Hey everyone, as a last head's up, we are allowing Nids to use either the Old or New book. They just have to notate on their army list which they are choosing to use.

WOW! That is a terrible decision. Catering to nids and the tournament hasn't begun. Anyone want to run previous editions of their codex? I know I do.

It is time to move on and forget the old book. This is a bad idea.
Also we need to see what the new book can do in a tournament setting before we really know how bad it is. It might do well, but now we have no way of knowing.
I thought that was also the point of you having the "Best of that Army" prize so even if you have a bad codex, you do the best with it and you still win something.

I have seen it 2 different ways. Allow only the current codex or if it was released within 30 days using the old. To allow both is absurd.

In the past there was normally a 30 day grace period before the new codex is used. This was GWs policy and it was adopted by most GTs. In the last few years since GW has pulled out of tournaments it has been up to each TOs. These days there is usually not a grace period with new codexs. Adepticon is one of the exceptions who still sticks to the 30 days. Frontline Gaming events are normally early adopters and they generally do not have a grace period.
Never has anyone had an option of which 2 codexs to use.

I'm ok with this move. I think probably the attendance of Tyranid players have drastically declined with the new book coming out. Also, with only about 1 months time to go before the tournament, I don't think many tyranid players can fully build and paint the NEW army that they wanted to bring. I know I wasn't able to.
As it's only been 1 month, I think this move was necessary in order to incentivize the tyranid players to come out. Otherwise, bugs will be a dying breed in tournament play, with only the most hardcore of players breaking out their bugs.
Or would people prefer that Tyranid players drop their beloved armies and instead, pick up armies like Tau, Eldar and Necrons to the LVO?

If Nid player attendance was all of a sudden in jeopardy, then why not say "Old book only"? This move creates a huge potential for chicanery.

Here are some stats for you guys who think that the old codex is alive and kicking:
Da Boyz GT 22-Nov 120 Players 4 Tyranids 3.3% Nids
11th Co GT 11-Nov 86 Players 6 Tyranids 6.9% Nids
Feast of Blades 15-Oct 100 Players 4 Tyranids 4% Nids
Nova Open 30-Sep 223 Players 7 Tyranids 3.1% Nids
I do not think that the new codex is keeping anyone away since no one was playing it before. Also if you think the old codex can stand up to Tau and Eldar and make a difference in the standings you are wrong.
Here are the highest placing Tyranid Armies:
Da Boyz GT 59th
11th Co GT 23rd
Feast of Blades 49th
Nova Open 34th 2nd was 80th
No tyranid player even got close to the top tables so if anyone thinks that switching to to the old codex means that they can compete, you are wrong.

Allowing either versions of nids won't even make a splash in the tournament. But allowing Stronghold and Escalation would rock the tournament meta pretty drastically. It'll become an arms races of the have's and the have-not's. Have fun, Tau players, trying to survive against the might of Strength D. With nids, it's like changing out the hubcabs of a car. With Escalation+Strongholds, it's more like changing out the entire engine. Good luck with doing that and not alienating the majority of the players out there.
tomjoad wrote:If Nid player attendance was all of a sudden in jeopardy, then why not say "Old book only"? This move creates a huge potential for chicanery.
I really don't see how. The meta has changed drastically between the 2 codices. If you see more than 1 tervigon in the list, the Doom or the Swarmlord, you know its the old book. If you see multiple mawlocs, t-fexes, tyranid flyers, carnifexes and any of the new units, you know its the new book. It's very easy to differentiate army builds from the 2 editions. With the exception of dual flyrants, people are going to be running drastically different lists between the 2 editions.
As to why not say "old book only", basically the guys at Frontline put their foot in their mouth. Basically, they spoke too soon, announcing that it was only going to be the new Tyranids at the LVO before the codex actually came out. Then the codex came out and they immediately regretted it. This is their way to make amends to the Tyranid community.

I have to agree with Blackmoor here(Shocking I know)
But to give the Tyranid Players more a breath of options is wrong. You said in one of your podcasts Reece "We probably will allow the new nid codex, the players who run codexes are ontop of the rules right away. It doesnt matter for those who dont, they might get shocked 2months to a year"
But now you are saying they are not prepared?

BTW, LVO is not the only tournament that has done this. I believe TSHFT just last week (or maybe 2 weeks ago) allowed both the old and the new bugs in their tournament. Other tournaments have done this as well with codices that were just released before the tournament.
As for GW's policies, I say screw them. Why would you want to follow the policies of a company who is doing NOTHING to help out the tournament meta? As a matter of fact, GW is doing just the opposite and making it harder for TO's to run their tournaments instead. GW doesn't give 2 cents about about competitive gaming. Why the hell are people still looking towards them as a standard to follow?

LOL, you guys are funny.
TSHFT in Seattle just did exactly this last week and the world didn't explode.
You have to mark your list as old or new and show it to your opponent. Anyone that registers as a Nid player will be instructed this at the event just to be double sure. If you play a Nid player, just ask which book he is using. We all know the old book, some folks don't know the new book. A lot of people aren't prepared to use the new book yet, they don't have models painted.
No one is going to switch midstream as there is no reason to, the new book isn't as good as the old one. You'll see if you are playing the old or new book in the pairings too.
So once all the wet hens stop their clucking, and realize there are all of 3 Nid players at the tournament, all will be well =) Thank them for not being yet another Tau and/or Eldar player!

The Hash House A Go Go has 3 locations in Las Vegas (Soon to be 4). Will it be at the one in the Quad Hotel since that one is only a couple of blocks away and within walking distance?
