I know that sucks but ultimately you have to convict to the full extent of the law in order to protect the wider community.
Ultimately if its on the table I want jail time for this sick little puppy.

Three grand is a Felony amount, but I don't know if you'd add it up in this case, or if it would be a bunch of misdemeanors. There's also Federal mail Fraud charges to look at, and I'd wager there are some sort of Federal "inter-state" laws to look at, as well.

I've known of that site for years. I've heard of dozens of people using it. I've never heard of anyone getting a response.
It cannot hurt to do it, though. Just more to throw at the guy when the time comes.
jathomas2013 wrote:but the big question: By taking him to court our models obviously become evidence, so...

I doubt it would be that long. After watching Prime Time television, I'd wager they can have him convicted within an hour!
LOL
Seriously, I doubt it would go to that.
*IF* your models have to be held as evidence, rather than just images of them, they'll only be needed as long as there will be a case. If the Prosecuting Attorney decides to prosecute, it would most likely go to a plea bargain. I can't see this making it to court. So, the time would be shorter for that.
As for waiting a long time to get them back... You'd still have them back faster than if he'd never been caught. Right?
Sometimes, it's hard to do the right thing.
Granted, I acknowledge that it's easy for ME to say that, as I don't have to sit and wait for my models.

Unless he's got some horrifyingly huge history, that's not going to happen. The most time he'll spend in jail is while they're processing him.

It is still devestating to your life to get one of those for fraud or theft. The world of work becomes very difficult.

@MM yeh i can see how it would default to a simple plea. I am fine with waiting. My brother looked into connecticut's laws for theft and it stated reparation of 3 times the value of stolen property?
Sounds alot like OT Bible laws, not so much USA state laws?

Everyone who is trying to get their stuff back please read the email below, and start getting picutres and dollar amounts of everything. Im not sure if Det. Curtis needs a total or a break down for each item or both. As soon as i hear more i'll post it here.

Austin,
Can you give me a dollar amount on your loss? I contacted Colony PD Detective Murray and have not heard back. Also, how do you want to go about claiming your property once we get to that point? Photos of property usually work, but seeing I have so much stuff here maybe there is someone here in CT that is also an enthusiast that may be interested in taking the property. Let me know what you think.

Can anyone make some suggestions on what I can do since I only got halfway through photographing my stuff when he said not to bother and just send it as he didn't mind (alarm bells should have went off).
I'm fairly certain my lot is close to the largest amount of stuff there, I could put a dollar value on it but some were old models, some were brand new, some were slightly broken in places.
Not sure how to progress. I was busy at work so I didn't file a police report and then I found out the place has been raided I'm not sure if I need to...suggestions anyone?

right a list out of every thing you had, and use current dollar amounts that would be the easiest.
A guy from B-Town has volunteered to go to Norwich for us, he has been helping me on that site through all of this, I asked him to post here as well.
Its amazing to me to see all this happening Keep it up

The community spirit on Bartertown is amazing. You almost always find someone willing to step up and help another trader/gamer, just for the sake of helping.
I find that same spirit to be present in many traders here, too.
@Cowen, if you don't have pictures of your exact models, search the internet. You can always say, "This model, but painted in XYZ colors."

If someone is willing to go and pick it up (as the officer seemed to indicate he was open to) then that is great. I can't imagine that the police would have the time / knowledge / etc to sort through and ship all of this out otherwise!

Yes I did catch him and he admitted to me what he was doing. The best route would be a larceny charge which is a misdemeanor. It would be more difficult to prove intent on issues with mail fraud because the postal inspectors would need to get involved. Unfortunately once the property has been recovered and the suspect identified assisting agencies loose interest. I also received a call from B-Town member who is local here in CT and would be willing to take the property in order to return it to its rightful owner. That will be several weeks down the road and I will let you know.
I have asked Det. Curtis to procede with the larceny charges, its much smaller then the fellony we had hoped for but hey its something.
Thank you

Awesome and yes I had hoped for more but it is a criminal record. If he does it again next time it will be worse.
I'm not familiar with law terms in the USA so I googled it:
Larceny is theft/stealing, the taking of anothers property with the intent to permanently deprive them of the property. Whether it's a misdemeanor or a felony depends on what the dollar amounts are in your particular state. On average $1000.00 or more in value of the item(s) taken makes the larceny a felony. Below that amount is either a petty misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor.
So its not crippling but he is getting something.

Members of Dakka who have been wronged by this person,
My name is Jason and I would like to help recover your items.
I am new here so allow me to introduce myself. I am 36 and have been playing 40k since just before 4th edition came out. I have a large DA and ork armies. I have small IG and BA groups as well. I belong to Bartertown and my references can be seen there by searching for the same online name: jason1977.
I have been following several BTRs of a Bartertown member called ‘Redemtion086’ who come to find out, is also known here as ‘Ahriman085’. He has done wrong to members on both sites. I never dealt with this person. The police have done their part and now I’d like to help out everyone.
If all parties agree, I would drive to Norwich, pick up everything and sort it out at my house. I would than repost items to the correct owner or where ever they wish. I have talked to the lead detective on this matter and he has my numbers. I know that Traceoftoxin has stated the he would do this but I think that if one person did this to help out everyone it would be easier. Being on Bartertown already I can cover that group. I would now like to cover members here. I don’t want cash for my time or gas. Just PayPal to post back to you what has been ‘stolen’.
Thanks,
Jason
Jason1977 on Bartertown
PS: While I will make every effort to get everyone's items back ASAP if allowed to do this, I do have a 6 month old.

Nothing as of yet it seems. Just keep watching. Keep any information available and keep any PMs/data/pics ready for dissemination. We do need to coordinate with Bartertown victims in figuring out how to get the models back once the detective releases them from custody. When that happens, not sure. scud1703 will probably let us know.

I attempted to purchase some warmaster blisters from this person however I refused to gift the payment and sent it "for goods/services" he subsequently refunded the transaction a few days later stating he didn't have the money to ship it but requested I resend him the money as a gift.... I didn't unsurprisingly and said I would wait until he next got paid. That was the last correspondence we had. Fortunately I didn't lose any money or merchandise as it sounds so many of you have.

The stuff is ready to be returned
Austin,
All the property is ready to be released back to you, however; the boxes are full of stuff and I want to make sure you get back what is yours. I received a phone call from some guy who says he lives a little closer than Texas, somewhere here in CT, and he would be willing to take the property and get it back to everyone affected. I guess there would be two options: 1. Do my best and go through everything and match it up to your inventory and ship it back to you or; 2. Allow this “volunteer” to come here and take the property and return it to everyone. Let me know what you think. If you choose the later, I can e-mail you a release form which you can sign and e-mail back.
On a side note: if you have time and would be willing to do so, a letter to the Norwich, CT City Manager describing your experience would be appreciated.
Thanks,
James Curtis, Detective
Polygraph Unit
City of Norwich, CT Police Department

If you all could take the time to write a letter to the CT City Manger that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Austin

Willing to do so reguardless. Traceoftoxin, hope you find a job, has also offered to go get everything and has an hours drive.

EVERY ONE who has been working with the Detective should write the City Manager and sing this man's praises. I think I might do so, as well.
