It seems like nobody at all plays imperial guard anymore. Especially with 6th edition out. I mean, occasionally you see a mechanized list posted here on Dakka, but elsewhere they have all but vanished to me. Used to be that orkz were underplayed and imperial guard were overplayed, now that has flipped in my eyes. (I play em both so it makes no difference to me.)

Can anyone explain why the Imps are apparently hiding under rocks?

it's been awhile since I played (been stuck in a wargaming desert in WV) but the last game night I went to I don't recall any IG players. my meta is packed with SM of all varieties last I checked. oh well, good for me because it means I'll never need to worry about my IG being sold out, and come the new Apocalypse release this summer I'll make them all pay for ignoring the Guard MUHAHAHAHAHA *cough* *cough* excuse me

Many people having a habit of bringing a smaller army, like marines, to their local for a fun game, but bring out the IG when it's worth carting about so many models, such as for tournaments. Think thats pretty much it really.

Or, your meta might just not have many by coincedence.

Our comp meta is filled by IG players spamming Vendettas in dire need of compensation...

Ouch, that's kinda rough to call IG players out like that. What you want them to spam Penal Legions or Rough Riders? The only bad thing about vendetta spam is that it makes the board cluttered and boring.

Indeed, i picked up DKoK for a side army and all of a sudden all i can play around here is other IG armies.

Why hold it against them? Most of the units in the codex lack general use, or just suck. I don't wanna play giant blobs of infantry or mech parking lots anymore than Vendetta spam.

On topic sorta: A meta with almost no IG sounds good, but then SM always fill the void...

Vendetta spam of 6th, Melta-Vets of 5th and wannabe 6th because nobody wants to re-buy their army.

I play footguard with only a few tanks personally, because I do not want to blow chunks to get enough tanks, aircraft, or forgeworld. Whatever I desperately need, I make myself. Besides guardsmen are a dime a legion, therefore making it a really cheap army for me to play.

I muddled in DKOK, but my meta does not like anything that has to do with Forgeworld or Chapter Approved. :(

Lots of people play imperial guard. They're the top tier army alongside necrons. Your local meta just seems to be missing them.

IG is still hugely popular. IG combined with some of their Battle Brother allies means their army has no weaknesses at all.

Need protection against melee? Bring some Blood Angels Assault Marines or Assault Terminators!

Need help with those pesky Monstrous Creatures? Bring some Grey Knight allies!

Need protection against aircraft/flying MCs/vehicles? Introducing the massively under priced Vendetta! Its good against everything and very hard to kill! SPAM YOURS TODAY!

I don't play my guard anymore as they smash to much face

There seems to be a commonly held perception that 6th edition is very unfriendly to vehicles, so in my community I've seen a lot of the armor heavy lists dwindling. I still see Guard lists, though, frequently backed up by some melee powerful allies.

Local communities can vary widely from the global trends, and it sounds like a lack of Guard is limited to your community. Downside, you don't get the immense satisfaction of killing huge clumps of guardsmen with single volleys of bolter/flamer fire. Upside? You don't have to watch the skies for Vendettas or falling Basilisk shells.

I have an Elysian Drop Troop list(the actual FW list)

The real question is whatever happened to the Imperial Navy? Especially considering that flyers are now becoming the norm, the biggest air/space craft entity is being ignored

They're not. You're making the mistake of assuming that your local area is representative of everywhere.

They aren't, it's more likely you are. My FLGS has around 33% IG players. Then just about every imperial army has IG allies. At tournaments I'd be willing to bet I'll see 66% of players with either IG primary or IG allied.

Locally, IG is still well represented. They just aren't running Chimera spam lists. Nearly every IG army I see has 2 x IG Blob units, Manticores and Vendettas. Additionally, they get to ally in some type of Marine for Prescience and get Fearless or ATSKNF.

Vendettas, Vultures, and Valkyries oh my! What can't a guard player horribly mutilate from the safety of airborne AV12 vehicles?

I mostly see MEQ armies in my meta but I am one of three guard players around. And I prefer Leman Russ spam, thank you very much!

It's pretty awesome to have all that armor on the board even though I know I'd be better off with vendettas backed up by medusas/ SW buffed blob squads. Has anyone seen a guard player use that list at your FLGS out of curiosity?

Besides myself there's only 1 person who plays IG consistently, as an elysian list, but he doesn't show often. Another who played it for 3 weeks after buying lots of fliers hardly touches it now, switching back to daemons/flavour of the month army.
Oh, there's also the father who cannot get in too often who built IG Blob/Tank list for his youngen.

Thankfully there's only 2, 3 guys here who use fliers, which don't usually do anything memorable. I ain't bringing detta's due to thinking I'd break the buggers and they're money costs.

There's one guy who brought it out for fun. It typically WAS the entirety of his army, he probably wasn't going to capture any objectives, but by the emperor there was pretty much no stopping it. Entire armies vaporized the moment they got within 24'.

In the area I play, plenty of people bring Space Wolves/IG allies and a big blob of atsknf guardsmen with prescience. It's a good job I have Eldrad for Runes of Warding.

I never thought that me as a swarm user could fear triple TL lascannons so much. The fact that they can vomit out squads wherever and whenever they please doesn't help either. It seems that a Gaunt's chronic allergy to flamers is only worsened when flamer squads can zip around on nearly invincible death carriages that can zap monstrous creatures with ease.

I learned how to play 6th edition with my IG, and played a number of games with them in a 40k league not too long ago. IG is as prevalent as ever.
