Hello Dakka!

So I've been itching to start a new army now that exams are over and I've been thinking Daemons. I know most people were miffed about the randomness of the army, but i play orks with weirdboyz and shokk attack guns so random is my specialty. But I'm also big into fluff, so i want this daemon army to be a mono-god list. maybe around 1000 points? I'm not sold on which god yet, but Some one in my group already plays Tzeentch so I would like something from the other gods. Leaning to Khorne of Slaneesh.

So two questions really;
a) Is a mono-god Daemon list viable? I'm not into tournies or anything, but i dont want to constantly loose. and
b) What god and what units would be suggested?

Thanks a lot Dakka - Chaos is strong
Cheers
Jpog

[Edit] - sorry, the thread was supposed to be about tactics and units, but lists got thrown in. I've edited the subject so it fits this board more.

Out of Khorne and Slaanesh I would say Slaanesh is probably a stronger mono god list.

Fast rending units throughout the army mean you get to combat quick and can kill off 2+ saves with your troops.

Slaanesh furies and Princes with the whip are pretty good units to look into.

A standard tactic that I think works with daemons is use your fast units with an Icon to power across the board then DS your troops/ slower units in around them. Its worth taking some instruments in your deepstriking units to maximise the amount of units you can bring in at once.

Dark Eldar- 1500pts Completed
Grey Knights- 1500pts 1 Guy done
Chaos Daemons- Approx 5000pts
Slaanesh Daemons- 1500pts, in progress
Khorne Daemons- 1500pts, in progress
Death Korps of Krieg- Plans being formulated.
---------------------------------------------------
High Elves- Approx 2000pts
Vampire Counts- Raising the dead once more

Mono Slaanesh is viable. Seekers are probably the best unit in the codex, Daemonettes put out a lot of attacks and can cross the board quickly, and Slaanesh Princes are probably the best prince option because the lash is so good with AP2 attacks. You can threaten all ranges of armor types and still deal with hordes pretty well. You might struggle a bit with capturing home objectives but if you are willing to add CSM allies that becomes much easier. Mono Nurgle can work but it is harder. Plaguebearers make excellent objective campers, the Great Unclean One can be basically invincible if he rolls right on Biomancy, and you can use the Plague Drones and a banner to get your army across the table quickly.

Mono Khorne and mono Tzeentch are probably not good options since their troops are pretty weak. I guess Tzeentch could work if you went full on flying circus and just took a few min squads of Horrors. Khorne only has two good units: hounds and the Bloodthirster, which just isn't enough to make a fully army.

I think mono Khorne can be done, Im currently building an 1850pt list thats all khorne daemons so Ill have to see how it goes.

The AP 2 Attacks only applies to Close Combat Attacks.

I agree with every other point you made though, good post.

Remember that:

soulgrinders can go in any mono god list

Skullcanons are mono khorne and cover a huge weakness of deamons.

Khorne can have a flying circus too, one that is pretty scarry too.

Don't use furies unless you intend on luring your opponent in with a sense security.

The masque of slaanesh is really funny if your opponent doesn't kill it asap. (Something that is sadly very easy to do)

They seem pretty good to me.

Or don't needlessly constrain yourself and instead, convert non-Khorne or Slaanesh units to fit your mono-god theme!

For example, if you choose Khorne but still like the rules of Seekers, turn them into a new custom unit and maybe call them "Skullreapers of Khorne" or "Bloodseekers of Khorne". I once saw a wicked conversion utilising regular Bloodletters riding Dark Elf Cold Ones...
Meanwhile, if you like Beasts of Nurgle for their counter-charge ability, build some Khorne spawn and call them Bloodbeasts of Khorne. In place of 'Attention Seeker', just call it 'Murderous Assault' or something similar.

As long as your army looks and feels like an all Khorne or all Slaanesh or all whatever god you choose, it's a mono-God army!

I agree with this. Good idea.

Yeah I'm thinking of Painting Daemonettes in Red.

I want to have a Skarbrand bomb, and he's better with them than bloodletters, sadly. Plus, Daemonettes are a threat to almost anything, bloodletters will bounce off 2+.

Also, Noise Marines + Daemons are legit. If I was starting from scratch, I would probably do that army. Min units with Blastmasters shooting through a horde of rending daemons. I think they compliment each other very nicely.

Playing: Droids (Legion), Starks (ASOIAF), BB2
Working on: Starks (ASOIAF), Twilight Kin (KoW). Droids (Legion)

You can attach a Herald and get LD8. Or, you can avoid getting into assaults you will lose (generally good advice for all Daemons, no matter their LD). But mostly, you should appreciate that -- even if the unit dies a miserable, horrible death from losing combat -- 20 Jump/Rending* Daemons will cause plenty damage/disruption for the measly 120pts you pay for them.

* Because you'd better be taking MoS on Furies.

OT: I can appreciate the desire to have a themed army, but in the end I think it's just too limiting. Some mono-god builds will be able to function well enough, but using only 25% of the codex means you're likely missing out on something the other 75% will do better. Take Slaanesh for instance: Princes, Seekers, and Daemonettes can make for a very strong list. But will they necessarily be at their best staying pure Slaanesh? Fiends are decent pseudo-frag grenades, but Khorne's Skull Cannon is better. KoS is great, but Skarbrand's abilities benefit Slaanesh units tremendously. Flesh Hounds can make up for Seekers' inability to climb ruins while filling a similar role. Divination/shooting support from Tzeralds/Horrors can shore up Slaanesh's general lack of shooting (outside of 12" range Princes). Plaguebearers are better objective campers than Daemonettes could ever hope to be. The point being, no one god will do everything better than the four gods combined.

If theme is paramount, then 626's suggestion is your best move: limit yourself to mono-god models/conversions, but don't limit yourself to mono-god rules.

Yup, so long as you convert and paint them well, no one's going to complain about e.g. a 'pure' Khorne army that includes Khorne counts-as-Daemonettes, especially if you can also come up with some appropriate fluff to justify your new daemons.

Staying mono-god rules-wise is certainly possible, but (as with any self-imposed restriction) is likely to give you a rather one-dimensional army.

I have run a mono tzeentch list for a while, just after the codex come out and have had a great deal of success with it, I have now branched out and bought a lot more then I oringally planned (planned a 1750 list bought everything with some extras and was going to leave it at that and play play play with it to know it inside out). I have two losses out of around 40 games which includes a lot against good players and a few against very good players. Two losses were one to shooty venom spam DE (darn splinter cannons) and a tailored necron air cav list.

I am in a weird place with this codex.....I use to run Nurgle mono with very high sucess, I have yet to win a game with the new mono nurgle.

Now I havent tried any of the new units for nurgle, but I dont see how the flies or plague hulk are going to help.

Seeing alot of issues with survivability of daemon princes and plague bearers...losing that extra toughness and eternal warrior in a world of space marines is not helping. Anyone have suggestions?

I essentially have boiled it down to two things, massive hoards of pbs with heralds and some beasts/flies or just rolling all csm nurgle and dropping daemons.

I've only played one game with my mono Khorne army, but I won, and it seems to work.

But, in all honesty, I think the best bet for a competitive mono-god army is to ally them with CSM, and then you can totally fill out units to fit functions that the demons codex is missing.

I'd like to run a Forgefiend or long range Obliterator with some Havocs in my allied CSM, giving me ranged fire support to sit with my Soul Grinders in my Khorne army.
