Because the books are so imbalanced internally, it is quite obvious what the good units are, so how do you even know if your opponent is using a list off the net?

At my LGS they happen but tend to be really rare. I would class our meta as "semi-competitive". We tend to push each other to play better and like to have tight hard fought games, but it's very rare to see someone show up to just deliberately beat face. For example, we discovered the 'Cron flying circus nonsense within an hour or two of the book being released (yes, we really were all sitting around reading in silence at the LGS - don't judge me. lol) and while we all realized how strong it was, we almost never see it. The only exception is if someone is wanting to get ready for a big tourney somewhere. Then we all come loaded for bear but that's obviously a special case.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

Most 'net lists' are very expensive, and ultimately short lived, meaning at least locally, there's only about 2 guys with them.

More common, in my experience, is to see a list locally which uses most of the elements of a talked-about list on the net, then tweaks it a bit for personal taste and/or cost savings. Sometimes you see a full-on iteration of a list talked about online, but not all that often.

Net lists usually refer to a template to build a list around rather than a specific list. There may be an original floating around somewhere but they aren't copied upgrade for upgrade very often.

How often do you encounter these lists in your local meta? Are they found mostly in regional tournies, or in friendly play?

I ask, because I simply don't see it in my meta. While the local player base isn't impoverished, I have yet to see anyone willing to dish out several hundred dollars for the new flyer models.
That's not to say that said persons don't exist in my area, but rather that they're far from the 'norm'.

I've been doing the tournament circuit for nearly 13 years now and net lists rarely ever appear, well other then mine that is, because I take them of giggles. I remember when Nidzilla was apparently rampant in the scene and I was the only person that had one and this was back when there was 5 tournaments of 50 to 100 people all across Canada. Then Nob bikerz and Paladins were uber broken and everywhere according to the internet and again nothing coast to coast.

There's another guy on Dakka that claims FateCrusher was in every single Toronto tournament, but he's stoned out of his tree or playing imaginary tournaments in his head.

It is kind of funny to think of net lists in my local meta. We have a lot of competitive players at my store (including the some well known names like Paul Murphy). We tend to see so called net lists on the table a few times before they become those Net Lists and then they tend to disappear shortly afterwards for something new that is designed to beat the current net list meta.

I dont see people playing without drakes or vendettas or scyths. Not everyone plays IG or necron , but if an army is cheap and good like SW , the armies take very simiular stuff and you cane be sure that there will be no Logan, BC or stuff like that in it.

The players who use net lists tend to be the fairly new players, looking for a way to beat the more experienced players. Some of them think that the net-list will act as a substitute for experience, and they usually get rick-rolled. Our local group is usually focused on experimentation, on finding a combination that works well for them but isn't the big fashion trend.

For sure, net lists are only good against average and noob generals, against anyone half decent at the game they fail hard with only a few exceptions

I tend to see one or two gimmick lists run at my FLGS. Most of the time though they fall off or are changed to fit local meta after loosing a few times to more well rounded lists.

I am not mean, I just don't care about your feelings. If you can't take constructive criticism, then you're just a sissy.

I saw all of those lists fairly regularly during their heyday. Particularly at big (US) national and regional events, like the Baltimore GT and Adepticon.

I would like to add that I feel the term 'net list' is a bit fallacious as the lists are almost never copied by wrote. They are more correctly (imo) guides on the solid units in a codex that can be tweeked for local metas.
