So, There was an argument about the positional relay today. Can it only be the edge that you can normally outflank from, or any edge that the positional relay is within 6 inches of.
Because i read it as the latter.

The Positional Relay rules are pretty clear. "even if it is your, or your opponent's board edge."

How can there be an argument when the codex specifically says you can use any edge including your's or your opponent's.

Because, they said it can only be used on ones that are normally outflanking from. just without the roll. I was trying to come in on the long edge in Vanguard, because my Relay was there, they said i couldnt.
I read it as any board edge aslong as it is within 6 inches.

The unit arriving must have been left in outflank reserves during deployment to use the relay, once it arrives you have a choice, outflank normally or use the relay.
If you did that just show them the book and it's done.

And if, after reading it again, they persist in telling you you're wrong I suggest finding new, literate, opponents.

There really is no way to argue with people that stubborn without resorting to blunt instruments.

Im going to ask someone we all know about the game his opinion on it.

to a certain extent if you know you're rule is right, but you would like to spare friends and the friendship as per Warhammer rules you could try and suggest you roll off on it.

1 , 2 ,3 his way
4,5,6 your way

I am an Ork player so you can guess what I usually pick...

But yeah, if people don't know rules it get bad >.<

Well it's good to be nice and all, but if you're not playing by that rule then what's the point of following all the others.

Well the arriving unit must already be in outflank reserve right? So that covers the two short edges since it could already enter from them... The PR rules specifically covers your or your opponent's edge (whichever it is within 6" of). So that covers the remaining 2 board edges. But it isn't worded as a blanket "any board edge". They give a restriction that the PR must be within 6" of an edge to make it available. So if the PR is within 6" of your board edge, you can't enter the unit from your opponent's edge...

if your mates disagree with the rule that is written, then maybe you should have them explain each part of the rule and what it means to them... And pay particular attention to what they think "your or your opponent's board edge" means and then have them tell you which short board edge is yours and which is your opponent's...

It's a new book they can't expect to have learned all of it from the first try.
And it's your responsibility as their friend to prepare them for what might be a nasty surprise during the next tournament they attend.

If I understand the situation correctly, then it sounds like you are preparing to buckle under the pressure of an Argument from Authority http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_authority#Forms

You are of course free to do so, but consider your other options. "Polite Disagreement" is the one I would choose

"Ignorance is bliss, and I am a happy man."
"When you claim to be a purple unicorn, and I do not argue with you, it is not because I agree with you."
“If the iron is hot, I desire to believe it is hot, and if it is cool, I desire to believe it is cool.”
"Beware when you find yourself arguing that a policy is defensible rather than optimal; or that it has some benefit compared to the null action, rather than the best benefit of any action."

On thin Ice?

If your Group isn't willing to have an Adult Conversation regarding rules, you may want to find a new Group.

I can understand some pushback on ambigious rules but this one is pretty straight forward.

Rules wise, the OP is on solid ground. This sounds more like a social malfunction.

The OP may be on "thin ice" because the 2 Tau "tourney players" are being stubborn/malicious, but they hold more credibility and respect at the FLGS or whatever environment they are playing in - older cousins, college dorm, factory workers, elementary school chess club, etc.

However, it is also possible that the OP is on "thin ice" because he acted inappropriately in the previous week's "big confrontation".

We simply don't have the context.

Rules-wise, it seems quite clear, but a 2-player game is about more than just the rules.

"Ignorance is bliss, and I am a happy man."
"When you claim to be a purple unicorn, and I do not argue with you, it is not because I agree with you."
“If the iron is hot, I desire to believe it is hot, and if it is cool, I desire to believe it is cool.”

Tell them to read the rule and ask them what they think it means by your and your opponents board edge.
