I’m both excited and worried about the bigger bugs. The broodlord showed that the contrast paints can scale up, at lest to the medium bugs. But the big guy is just big. Once I finish the pengine (which I need to get back to work on) the Trygon is moving to the large paint handle. I suspect once I get moving, it will be fine. It’s just the potential dread to worry about.

While Slug Boy sleeps the day away and I work on my morning coffee, I guess it’s not a bad time to do my Q3 musings.

Here are my goals:
1 Paint 25 SoB 8/25
2 Paint more than I buy. 73/80
3 Paint At least 12 spare bits. I've magetized a number of things, painted the primary set up, but never get around to doing the other options.
4 Try to get more games in. At least 12, with some being non Floorhammer.
5 Update my blog at least once a week, and maintain a consistent pace of work (1 mini a week).
6 Paint at least one unit for all my army factions. (Ultra, Eldar, Deathwatch, Death)
7 Enter and finish an entry every month for the painting challenge. If the monthly challenge stops, enter at least one comp in the year. In addition, paint something odd from the back of the bench a/o try out a new technique.
8 Buy, build, and/or paint at least one piece of terrain.

1. I’m a bit behind on the SoB. I’ve got the Pengine on the table, and need to get more layers on it. I could tag one of the remaining squads for my Dec open project, which would help get them done. If I push, especially if Nov has a sister friendly theme, I still might be able to get them all done. But if I’m not having fun here, I’d rather they be late then crappy.

2. Doing real good on this one. I’ve got 10 guys waiting to be based, and 3 more almost done. The kicker will be the year end purchases. There is a non-zero chance I’ll pick up two megaforces if there are appealing ones for SM and Nids. I’ve been careful with my Nid purchases by not picking up anything I only want one box of, so if there was a duplicate in a bundle, I’d not mind getting more. It’s one thing holding me back from grabbing the Flyrant. Marine stuff I’m a lot more fussy on, due to already having a large selection. But I need a lot of core stuff, so still might happen.

3. I think I’ve done 2 spare backpacks, Need to do better. This one might be a fail this year. The selection of things that needed work was getting pretty thin, so not a lot of motivation to get things done. The new Codex might spur some work here if options get better.

4. Got tables, no more floorhammer. Which means I can be technically correct (the best kind of correct) on that aspect. Although the intent was to get to the FLGS and play other people. COVID shot that one. Still, crusade is doing good things for my game count. Might not make 12 by year’s end, we’’ll see.

5. Doing good here. Motivation for painting has had some pretty bad ebbs, but that’s just a reflection of life right now. Hit my 1-a-week goal a while back. Still here, still blogging.

6. Considering I added a new faction, this one gets to win with bonus points. Right now the Deathwatch just has 4 guys painted, so not quite a full unit. I should do at least one more so I can have 5 guys and call it a solid win, and not just a “close enough"

7. I’m actually doing much of the running of the monthly comp these days, still going strong. Digging up the ‘nids from the back of the bench, and going full contrast counts as a new technique. Solid win with extra credit on this one.

8. Primed some crates, plan on getting at least some hills done. Entered the LoER’s comp, hopefully finish that. I’m not expecting to do wonderful work, but would at least like to get the green hills of the snow table.

Overall looking pretty good. The spare bits and SoB are the ones looking to fail, and possibly quite badly. I need to paint one more Deathwatch. Everything is still achievable, but is going to take some focus. If I use the painting comps in Nov/Dec for the sisters, it will be a lot easier to get things done. As Dec is open, I should try to work one of the units into Nov. We’ll see. Oct is for the spooks.

Going to hold off on the YTD pic. I should be able to finish up the WG and base everyone tomorrow.

Edit: just finished a game vs. The Boy. Went pretty badly for me. I’ll type up more later.

So the game Sunday was a bit of a smash up. Relic, so everyone pile into the middle. I made an error or two, and the re-rolls on the Salamander and ability to ignore AP -1 was just a tough matchup. His roster is a bit stronger then mine, as I did things like include a 10 man ML/F tac squad in a rhino out of pure nostalgia. Now, in a week when they double in wounds they will be a little more viable, but playing power level they are criminally under equipped and it showed. Plus I should have stuck in the rhino an extra turn.

I think that’s turn 2, after his movement. He fell back with the razorback and last infiltrator, and is about to put the hammer down. Things got ugly, fast, and the remainder of the game is me thrashing around trying to help I get a little luck to pull it off. That did not happen.

Solid win for the Salamanders.

On the paint bench:

Hey, you guys showed up! There were a few little bug things here, but I think they left.
Did you see where they went?
Not really, without a seer nearby everything is fuzzy.
I wonder if there is one nearby. I feel lonely without one. They like to hide behind us most of the time.
True. Maybe we should find one. They could probably tell us where your friends went. And might need to be protected. Although they all see the future, so probably can’t get into too much trouble...

Meanwhile, on the YTD shelf:

...help? Anyone?

So everyone done and based. The WG, not unsurprisingly, dragged on a bit at the end. They will get their formal pics then head on over to rescue that farseer. I moved the arcoflagelents down to the paintbench to join the pengine. Hopefully get some work done on them. They should go quickly. Fingers crossed. I’d like to clear the bench by the end of the weekend, so I can get started on October’s spooks. Need to get moving on the SoB stuff, so hopefully this window will be enough.

Cut some hills out last night. Used the last of the old scrap and a corner of the new board. Could probably get 1d3+2 more hills this size out of it. Odd stringy results from the new foam cutter, will try the wire attachment instead of the want next time. Thinking of covering them with plaster filler before flocking, give them a little more texture, and hopefully durability.

I know I need to make more for a tiered affect. Right now this was just getting the most out of that last scrap. Take out the middle one for use elsewhere on the battlefield, and they pair a bit better.

At this point I’m waiting for the more formal leaks with a little collaboration and sources. We are at the troll leak time where people just toss stuff out for lolz. Not that I’m not following them, just using a lot of salt.

Took my formal Q3 pic. Getting pretty full. Moved the ratspooks down to the bench to wait for free spots on the handles. I want to finish what I have first, if not, I might never get it done. Not like the specters that that much time once I get started on them.

Just to prove I’m alive and painting:

Doing one of the little naughty buggers up as a test, then will do his friends. Just waiting for the last wash to dry before I dunk him in nulan oil. Want him dirty and dingy. Putting layers on the pengine.

I have roughy zero motivation for anything these days. Just going through the motions of life is a slog. Still, no other option, so I soldier on. Hope everyone is enjoying the nice fall weather. Or spring for those of you on the flip side.

Put the wash on the arco-flagelent last night and a few silver highlights and the eye lenses this morning. Calling him done. I’ll grab a pic next time I have the camera out. Decided to punt on his two friends for now, cleared the decks to paint the spooks for the month. Put their first blacks down. Hopefully they will go quick. Not planning anything extra special for them.

Organizing the challenge isn’t hard, just a bit of time. Which I have to spare, so I don’t mind doing.

I figure I have at least 4-6 more years working through my Death backlog at the rate of 5ish models a year. I’ll have to start keeping an eye out for new things to pick up.

These guys are ready for the baseing stages. Black rims, and flocks rocks and tufts.

Plenty of the month left to catch up on other projects, which is a good thing.

The undead are very accepting and egalitarian. All are welcome into their ranks. It’s inevitable.

Rocks and tufts down on those guys. I’ll flock them tomorrow, and maybe get the glamor shots, but that can wait if I’m lazy.

Moved the 2 arcos back the the handles. Debating what to put on the other 3. Units I want to use for the crusade? Things I need to paint to reach my year goals? More Nids? So many choices. I might wait until I read the new codex to make up my mind, or might just start something. Suggestions always welcome.

But right now I’m going with another drink and the recliner. It’s been that kind of week.

I should really break out my undead for a group shot. Maybe not everything, but the new AoS era stuff.

Calling them done:

I’ll get formal pics next time I break out the lightbox. Still early in the month.

Some WIP from this morning:

Slow progress on the pengine, first base coats down on the arcos.

And made a trip down to the local GW store to grab some new stuff. I bought the Indominus boxes from the closer place, so wanted to spread my support to the other slightly less close one. Gave me an excuse to stop at a cafe at the town I used to live in for brunch. Lovely day to sit outside and enjoy it up here.

Tentative plans are to build the battle brothers for the assault bolters and the stalkers from this box, mixing in some bodies from the assault intercessors and finish them up as well. Sarges are probably going to wait for the full assault intercessor kit to drop for weapon options.

Need to read and digest the new book. Will be interesting to see what changed.

Yes I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the book. In the interests of laziness I ordered it from my preferred Internet shop with a bunch of paints only to get an email today saying their delivery of the Codex had been delayed. Still a few days to go. Bleh.

OK, some random thoughts from my fist parse of the new codex.

WTF is up with the bloat? Why did we need a separate entry for the upcoming gravis captain with heavy bolt rife? He is one line off from the old one “may swap boltstorm gauntlet for master crafted HBR” Done. Did the pred need to be two entries? I can see things like the land speeders being split, as they come with different PLs. But come on GW! This is crazy. And the byzantine lists of what gear you can take just to match the models they make is getting stupid. KISS.

Chapter locking some of the gear is silly. Like the captain options. And would it have hurt them to just add the HF to the heavy weapon list for tacs/devs? Salamander players want to know.

Banners work on all core units. Dreadnoughts are core. Even in death, they get one more swing.

I like how a lot of random stuff is now keywords. Sure, you cant push a whole line of rhinos up and pop smoke on all of them. But you also don’t give up your round of shooting to do it anymore. Things like autolaunchers on repulsors are a lot more worth it.

Look at the keywords. The might surprise you. Things like outflank and smokescreen show up in places you might not expect (scouts, scout bikes, etc)

Rhinos lost repair.

Relic terminators cost more for no good reason. Well, you pay for the price of flexing you gear. Which you then have to pay for. My 5 man squad of capheracti are pretty much just overpriced assault terminators now. On the plus side, each LC gives you +1A. Will it blend? I think so.

Thunder hammers got the nerfbat. Hard. They are one worse AP and one more D then a powerfist. Which is approaching a lateral shift. But still cost 1.5x to 2x as much as the fist. Pass. Especially now that fists are a flat 2D. Chainfists are another lateral choice (but priced the same as a fist). Extra point of AP, but going from 3 to 4 is not the same as going from 3 to 2. And d3 variable damage, but max vs. vehicles. Honestly, they should all cost the same.

Veteran intercessors can take HBP/Chainswords. That’s a zillion attacks. Might have to dredge up some vet shoulderpads. Or just white trim a 5 man squad. Big boys can’t fit in TDA to get the honors anyway.

The intercessors’s GL is now just a weapon, so you can fire it in addition to the rifle. Not even as a combi, just CHONK and eat a grenade.

Infiltrators medic got changed. No longer a mini apothocary, but ignore the first failed save. Simpler, and lets you shrug off a lascannon, but only good if constantly taking fire. Which they probably are.

Contemptors got their profile flattened a bit. No longer degrades, but not as great to start. All the dreads got the -1 dam to hit, just always on. And the Ven still has his 6+++. And they are core. Good time to be mortally wounded.

Combat shields are 5++ and +1 to armor saves. Need to see who can take them that I don’t already have one modeled for. Might just be assault marine sarge.

Ultramarine Eliminator squads are going to make Eldar look like slow pokes. Tac doctrine, so move and shoot like you didn’t. 6”, shoot, (sarge with his carbine) move another 6”

TFC lost a point of S and AP. Ouch.

AA tanks look to be really good at their job, but just kinda OK at non-aircraft. Which is good.

Like the new tank, not the new speeders.

LSS for the same assault rule as the impulsor, but scouts are no longer ObSec. Or troops. Or durable. But you can dump them right in someone’s lap. Or the could just shoot from the speeder. Might be nice for some secondary objectives.

Updated with the new purchase. Still need to think about gear and options. TH on an intercessor sarge might still be done for looks, but they are way overpriced these days. Magnets is the obvious answer.

I’ve seen some decent conversions of the apothecary, so am warming up to him. Arm swap to get rid of the goop, and get his foot off his battle brother. New rules look good for him.

Not sure if the changes to reivers have warmed me up to them. AP -2 pistols is kinda nice, and a cool strat to disrupt things. But if I did grab a squad, would they go here or with the rest of the phobos in the 10th? The last FA slot might wait for the outriders to get a full release (which due to their codex entry, I do not expect anytime soon)

Things to buy:
Apothecary
20 intercessors
10 heavy intercessors
5 assorted brothers for KT use (probably more intercessors)
4 <insert FA pick>

Hmm. I was thinking of picking up the assault intercessor box when it came out. Mostly for the weapon options, but more bodies is good. They might join the 1st company as vets.

Speaking of the 1st, I see that bladeguard and be taken in squads of 3-6. This pleases me. I’m going to assume the full kit is a 3 man box. One to make a powerfist/plasma pistol captain, one to make a new sarge (with a volkite pistol, because awesome), and one ‘basic’ brother. 3 guys from the Indominus box makes a 5 man squad. The Codex approves of this action. The pushfit sarge doesn’t have anything overt that marks him as such, so just needs not to have marking painted on.

Some of this is slow burn projects, but the end of year might get expensive and my paint more then I buy goal might be in trouble.

It hurts my soul to know that they will not be painted well. Or if you look at it /just/ the right angle, you can see the slop/primed areas I just could not get a brush into.

Edit:
Looking at my crusade roster, there need to be some changes.
Chapter master upgrade can’t be taken until higher XP levels (and has a +2 PL bump now) Need to drop it.
The Indominus Lt. loadout costs and extra PL.
Vet intercessors are now a separate elite pick, and +1PL. But don’t take the requisition point to get, w/ associated crusade point cost.
Scouts moved to elites
Tac squad unchanged (But I need to rearm and reequip to something less nostalgic and more effective)
Victrix HG unchanged
Land Speeder Typhoons cost an extra PL.
Auto/Las pred unchanged
Rhino unchanged

So assuming I drop the CM upgrade, my roster went up 3 PL and had 2 of its troop picks moved over to elites.I’ve got 4 RPs saved, and will talk to The Boy about how we want to deal with changes and refunds. But 3 RP to add the needed troops and cover the price hikes should do. Last one saved to rearm the Tac to full Melta I’m thinking. So I guess what new toys to add to the crusade is going to wait until after I get my troops sorted out in from the new codex.

Some of the new battle honors for the marines are broken. +1 to BS? Or WS? Ugly. The ability for a unit to just pick its doctrine each turn? Prone to abuse. But the one that rubs me the wrong way is terminator honors. +1A and Ld, (And W for non-character models) has to be on the sarge in a squad. Every sarge these days already has that worked into their statline. Not the W, but the A/Ld. So they are double veteran now? Or tack it onto an Ultramarine Librarian for Ld 11? Nice for those mind war type powers.

Slow progress, but progress. Arcos are ready for their contrast paints (red, skin) so almost there. Pengine has Soooooo many fiddly details. Keep going back and missing them. Need to just focus more and hit him with a brush. Mostly just the pilot and the wires and chains. But lots of work to do, and with a steady brush, so prime time. Not morning coffee work.

Still don’t know what to move down. Might do some nids to lure me back to the bench and boost my numbers. Kinda expecting to pick up another score minis before the year ends. Maybe more. I also need to do my squirrel inventory for the winter. If I hurry on a build, I might be able to get it primed before winter hits. There is a stupid amount of stuff in the primed pile, so no real rush. Just “will I want to field this in the next 6 months?"

Arcos done, just need to be based. Two guys I did last year can join them, as they never got that step. I think there are more of the old metals in a box somewhere. My friend accidentally bought twice as many as he needed, and then the edition changed and they sucked, so were a no rush project. I should still drag them out and clean them up at some point.

Few more layers on the pengine. Hate that thing. But need to keep moving forward.

Paint station is clear. Need to figure out what to do next. Maybe a review of the primed pile tomorrow over coffee. Input is appreciated.

Sister's stuff is moving along.

Work on the Pengine with a movie you know well playing in the background. When there is a scene you really like pause in your painting. This will help break up the monotony of the little details...when you return to the model after the mini-break you should have a little re-charge to paint those little details.

Well it works for me.

Cheers,

CB
