Subject: War hound scout Titan, chances of beating one

Boom! Leman Russ Commander
|
So a friend of mine is building up a war hound scout Titan with dual turbo lasers. We plan on an apoc game where his chaos marines will be on a team with our other friend who plays nids. Now for our team my ally will be space marines and i dont recall him having much in the way of beating a Titan aside from termies. So with my army i will have a russ heavy army with a foot horde to sit back. My big prize is my shadowsword. What are my chances that my shadowsword can take on a warhound Titan with turbo lasers. It'll likely be a slugfest, and really the bes tuse for the Shadowsword is to hunt his more vulnerable units, and stuff where the big gun can tear big holes out of the opponent's army.
I'd say a good bet for taking out his Warhound is a couple of drop pods full of melta sternguard.

Thunderfire cannons, missile launchers, and las-cannons. If you're fielding marines against a titan then these are your titan killer choices.
Shadowsword it almost ad durable as a warhound, but not quite because of the warhound's void shields. The tank can still be a very effective beat stick, but its expensive seeing as it's role can be filled in other ways.

Impossible. The Warhound out-guns the Shadowsword 4:1 (literally four of the same shot), so you would have to have amazing luck with the dice to beat it. There's no strategy that will help you, all you can do is pray.
curran12 wrote:I'd say a good bet for taking out his Warhound is a couple of drop pods full of melta sternguard.
This. Mass podding sternguard + combi-meltas will kill the Warhound on turn 1 unless your opponent is very careful to fill all of the space next to it with models.

Thats what I figured, I will have to talk to my space marine ally and have him try to get some melta/lascannons/missile launchers.
Now if we are on a big enough board would it be best to start the game on the table or start in reserves with the shadow sword to possibly get the first shot off.
I think I will have to run a couple vanquishers with my Leman russ force.

Get a Tau buddy that has one of these..
Play on a big area, and the warhound will break out into holes..
But yes if your enemy does not have a lot of AA or fliers, maybe invest in some flying lascannons, Warhounds have problems with hitting those.

well seeing as hes putting only turbo lasers on it he wont be able to hit air, and the space marine player actually is building up tau allies, I should mention to him to start up a savings plan for it lol.
But basically we all have been building up armies and are all getting around 3-4k, and Im probably closer to 5-6k as I have around 10leman russ, but between my ally and i we have 2 vendettas and 3 storm talons. But otherwise its going to be a pretty big blood bath.

Haywire stuff effect super heavies on 6's only, and that's a glance. Drop pods full of melta is a good plan.

take about 4 squads, get in behind or at the side. Dead titan.
With Tau, Mass broadsides, NOT the tigershark. Markerlite, then destroy it. Or even crisis suits round the back. Remember, the void shields only protect from 12 inches outwards. If you get inside that radius....BOOM.

So, how exactly is hoping for 6s to glance supposed to be a viable titan-killing option?
(The math: 10x Broadsides cost the same as a railshark. The Broadsides average 1.25 glances. The railshark averages 0.9 pen at AP 1 with no cover allowed. I think I know which one I'd rather have.)

Well if the opposing force has a flyer or skyfire, you'll have to zoom, so sixes to hit. Either that or go hammerheads.
LOL It was hammerheads actually, rather than the broadside spam.
But yeah, either spam shooting or get inside the void shields....

Step 1: Get inside the void shields. Step 2: Shoot lots of melta. The above suggestion of drop pod sternguard with melta is a good one. If I were him, I'd consider putting a Disruptor Beacon near the titan for this very reason.

TH/ SS Termies?
TH/ SS Termies have a special formation that gets to throw the almighty VORTEX GRENADE. It can krump up Titans pretty good, but it's a vanilla marines only thing as you need Lysander for it.

Does the Vortex Grenade scatter? I find it quite amusing to think about it going all Imperial Guard demolition charge and falling back onto the unit that threw it.

If some one was running tau, then 3 full Pathfinder in a mirage infiltration formation with a ton of emp grenades should take out a titan quickly.
Or a Rail Shark (got to use one on my first Apoc game and took out a stomps (first shot first apocalyptic blast ))
Otherwise Stern guard drop, or a gak load of vendettas should do the trick

Not sure, I think it works like a meltabomb, someone else will have to check on it though, but the Imperial Fist's finest dying to a bad throw from the vortex grenade would be pretty funny.

There is a landraider varriant for apocalypse that had 3 TL Lascannons and 2 regular Lascannons that they sell an upgrade sprue for. Terminus I think. That might help out but it would die if targeted. Also, TH&SS termies even without the vortex grenade formation would help. Though I'm sure you could just proxy Lysander. That formation also gets to deepstike on a titan with no scatter. They have a 3++ and hit at Str 8 with 3 attacks on charge. Attack the side or back if you can and that'll produce a lot of pens. I have no actual knowledge of a titans CC prowless or AV.
If I ever get to play an Apoc game against a titan I will run with 2 10-man TH&SS squads and Lysander. And my 3 super heavy tanks... Damn, why won't my broke friends buy a damn titan!

Get into melee with it and/or melta weapons.
It will die to any sort of melee or short ranged anti-tank.
If you do use the Shadowsword against it, drop the Void Shields before you use the Volcano cannon. Bouncing a Volcano cannon off a void shield is a good way to waste time.
And pray he doesn't realize Warhounds fit perfectly on Skyshield landing pads.

Why? They're strength 8 and a titan is a walker with front armor 14. You need 6's just to glance. Take Chainfists. S8+ 2d6 from Armorbane is so much better.

It's for Lysander's titanhammer formation methinks.

So as I havent played apoc and dont know the rules for void sheilds, how do I drop them? I know the sheilds dont work if your withing 12" right? so Obviously a bunch of pods with melta weapons. But as I will have a shadow sword, 2 vendettas, a bunch of lascannnon infantry squads, and possibly 2-3 vanquishers, 1 of which will have pask how do I drop the sheilds to make use of this longer range fire power?

The rules for void shields are covered in the FW appoc updates here. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/a/apoc6thupdate.pdf
You drop them by shooting at the vehicle.

So essentially a titan has a certain number of sheilds and for each time I pen or glance it the titan can use a sheild to ignore it? and once the titan is out of sheilds then my shots just go through.
