TL;DR everything in the 40K universe set in a tone of grand adventure vice the dystopian future. The Orks are a kind but shy race, the four gods of order work with the Imperium to establish peace, and Tau are shifty/sneaky race of xenophobes.

Also regarding cute tyranids for infiltrating, I recall from the RT days the Catachan Face-eater. A beastie that likes warm, wet conditions and feeds by latching onto a targets face and dissolving it. Unfortunately it has spread to nearby worlds, likes bathrooms and has an uncanny resemblance to a face cloth

I was bored the other day and found out that the Earthshaker part of the basilisk kit fits just fine over the engines of a valkyrie. We then decided that you'd have to make a leadership test after firing the basilisk to see if the pilot lost control because of the force of the shot or not.

There also seems to be 3 distinct interpretations of "ridiculous" being posited here. The first is a blatant disregard for background (chaos Tau, female marines), then there is the stupidly overpowered potential unit (jump pack marbo necrons) and finally the units that actually exist that were obviously thought uip by games devs on crack (Dreadknight, wolfriders). Anyone got another type up their sleeve?

Now I know many have made sterling arguments here, and though it may seem like I'm repeating myself, I must once more say:

I'd probably have to agree that the dreadknight and wolf cavalry are some pretty absurd looking units.

As for ridiculous units, those monkey genius engineer things do come across as a little silly.

So stupid it would even work even in 40k, see the Earthshaker on a valkyrie or an earthshaker on a centaur I though at one point, basically its a cannon held on a centaur by 5 kriegsmen, everytime it fires it kills one men till all 5 are dead and the cannon flies away from the centaur after killing the last guy.

How about giving sniper rifles to the worst shots in the Space Marines army? Or have the newest untested members of said Space Marine army perform one of the toughest jobs in the military that takes years to master and have them infiltrate behind enemy lines. And don't give those scouts the ability to do anything when they get there like call in artillery or air support or spot enemies or anything.

Oh, wait... Thats what Space Marine scouts already do...

OK, how bout kroot with crisis suits or Space Marines on chariots pulled buy horses Ben Hur style.

Or a dreadknight ON wolf calvary.

Just preposterous. A earth caste Tau from a human father and female water caste mother. Trained by mercenaries and built with ap2 CC weapons that boost her strength by 2-3 making her a close combat beast. And her planet got destroyed by Chaos giving her preferred enemy Chaos.
