Hello All,

I have a question, and it would be, What is this symbol? I have seen it displayed across a few different chapters, most notably Luna Wolves, Sons of Horus and Imperial Fists. It is also embossed on Loken's bracer on the actual FW model.

"You are like a son and together we have all but conquered the galaxy. Now the time has come for me to retire to Terra. My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words came from mine own mouth. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.

Looks like an eagle's head.

Maybe it's the sign of the Emperor?

EDIT: nope, the Aquila should be in use at that point.

It is the emperor's lightning bolt iconography. IIRC correctly that is the symbol of the Thunder Warriors, so after they were gone I *think* that those who fought with the emperor in the crusades were emblazoned with them.

Weren't the Emperor's Children the only legion to ever bear the Imperial Eagle?

According to the wiki, everyone had it.

That's strange; one of the Emperor's Children's greatest boasts was that they alone among the legions had the honor and privilege to wear the Emperor's emblem.

I think they were the first to do so. Later on everyone had the emblem built into their armor.
Oh I see, everyone got the Aquila after the heresy. Before and during it was just the EC.

Could the thunder warriors symbol be used to show that astarte was terran born?

The EC were the only space marines to be granted the right to wear it as a legion. Other space marines could earn it through merit. Iirc Garro bears the Aquila on his chest.

Garro only bears it after his "ascension" to the rank of Knight Errant, which came from Malcador himself, and the Aquila that he has on his Errant armor is of a 2 headed eagle that has both eyes open, a slight difference from the Emperor's Aquila.

Edit: Apparently the symbol was used as the Badge of the Emperor before the Aquila was adopted.

Loken wasn't a terran, so it's not a mark of a terran legionnaire. More likely, it's a badge of honor for fighting alongside the Emperor.

Any Elgionaire could wear what was known as a palatine aquila, a simple marking that showed devotion, but the III Legion were the only ones permitted to wear The Aquila as seen on 40k models. I think it was either Fear to Tread it was mention or Betrayer, but I don't remember EC in Betrayer so I believe its the former.

If the first image is anything to go by, packing a seriously filled codpiece.

*restrains mental image of a space marine's codpiece filling* ...while we're on symbols, I saw some lovely marines a while back bearing the symbol of a hammer with lightening bolts on each side, what's that about?

...And Fotherington-Thomas, just thought i''d let you know that someone got the reference. I had many happy days at St Custards.

The Emperors Original Symbol wasn't an Eagle.

It was a lightning Bolt, and is referenced in many HH books this way, the Mark of Calth Book references this in the "Athame" Book about the Blade through the ages. Also Olly Pious mentions things "About the Man".

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Aquila

"The Imperial Aquila, known in ancient times as the Palatine Aquila, is a two-headed eagle sigil which represents the entirety of the Imperium of Man and was chosen by the Emperor of Mankind at the start of the Great Crusade in circa 800.M30. The Aquila replaced the earlier symbol of a lightning bolt that had been used to represent the Imperial forces during the Unification Wars on Terra at the end of the Age of Strife in the late 30th Millennium.
