Pretty clear explanation. But with the lamp directly on top of the miniature, aren't you actually showing zenithal highlights? It's still a trick I'm certainly going to use, but in real life light isn't only coming from directly above you.

Being new to this, I was concerned about getting my highlights and shadows correct. I never thought about using a lamp or taking pictures to help me. This is great (and could probably help me in other forms of art)!

Thank you for sharing.

Yeah, this happens to be true. It doesn't show highlights that would catch from ambient lighting in the world that would otherwise still pick out highlight details on the opposite side of zenithal highlighting.

A good point, but I tend to combine this with airbrush highlighting which does account for the ambient highlights and use this technique to find the brightest points of the model. I should probably have mentioned that, but hey it's also just another way of doing highlights. I would much rather see this then hardlines around every single panel and detail which happens quite often in many people's styles.

Airbrush highlighting? Sorry, could you explain that a little more for someone who's still trying to get in on the whole airbrush thing? Thanks!

Here's a link to the thread that contains my videos on airbrush highlighting and airbrush shading.

FearGFX also does a god job of demonstrating the concept as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HiQCwlc9GQ

Wait, is it any different from Zenithal highlighting? What we were trying to point out is that Zenithal highlighting doesn't catch the other ambient light highlights, or maybe I'm just confused?

I am still in the "research" phase of my painting, haven't painted a mini yet. This video was extremely helpful in showing a simple and easy way to figure out my highlighting, which to be honest had me a bit intimidated.

Subscribing to this and using your advice when I start painting.

Thanks for the post.

Very cool, thanks for that. Gave me something new to try. To be honest, I had always wondered where to highlight a model, this made alot of sense. Love the snapshot idea too!
