Subject: Brazilian soccer (football) game was apparently "imported" from the Game of Thrones universe.
SAO PAULO (AP) — Police say enraged spectators invaded a football field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body after he stabbed a player to death.
The Public Safety Department of the state of Maranhao says in a statement that it all started when referee Otavio da Silva expelled player Josenir Abreu from a game last weekend. The two got into a fist fight, then Silva took out a knife and stabbed Abreu, who died on his way to the hospital.
VIOLENCE IN BRAZIL: Protester dies at Confederations Cup
The statement issued this week says Abreu's friends and relatives immediately "rushed into the field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body."
Local news media say the spectators also decapitated Silva and stuck his head on a stake in the middle of the field.
Police have arrested one suspect.

This is pretty much something that would happen at a sporting event in Game of Thrones... And not in reality.
Anyway, its pretty shocking, read about it yesterday. As for security, I don't think this was a very high up the chain match in Brazil. I haven't actually read the teams that played, but i'm guessing its pretty amateur, may not have even been at a ground, just a pitch. But I don't know.
Also odd they've only managed to arrest one man, and in another article I read it said they had two suspects. Sounds like more than 3 people did this, can't be easy to quarter a guy...
Wow. This is not going to help me convince the wife that going to Brazil for a holiday next year is a good idea. I'm a massive football fan and was working on convincing her to take a holiday around the time of the WC. Don't think that's gonna happen now!
Still, it makes the clashes between Millwall fans and Charlton fans look like a kids birthday party. Certainly puts the 'violence' here into perspective does it not?

It constantly amazes me how "passionate" soccer fans are around the world. If only we could import this practice to American sports maybe refs wouldn't be so awful or corrupt

If only we could export the respect for match officials seen in Rugby and Cricket to other "sports"...

You, of course, mean without the killings and quarterings, right?

You need action in the stands to compensate for the lack of spectacle in watching twenty-two dudes walk, slow and aimless, over grass for ninety minutes.

As opposed to the massive shows they put on for American Football in between the million breaks in the 3 hours of "play" when they are changing the entire 400 man team around because the last team was only for play in the 20-30 yard zone.

I'm a hockey fan.
People can talk about the fast pace and required toughness (and rather feminine shorts) of rugby all they like, but you don't start getting ballistic injuries until you put on skates.

I think you're right in that football (of the round-shaped ball variety) is an inherently frustrating sport for fans .. players cheat by diving, and are rewarded for cheating through set pieces. Then holding the ball, and stopping the opponent from getting to it.. I think that pent-up aggression translates into the fans to the point where it needs some way to vent, it's no surprise that it is one of the worst of all sports for fan violence.
Of course very low levels of education/fan intelligence in this case, plus a bit of mob-mentality, make this kind of thing happen as well..
You want passion in American sports? Go to a little league game... Some parents get pretty miffed about bad calls and their angel getting hit in a football game lol

I've never understood how Americans can complain about soccer being boring and then turn around and watch NASCAR and look at a bunch of cars drive around in a circle for hours at a time.

I think most American sports fall into this as well. I mean you guys even made Rounders a pro sport. No sport should be so dull the only way you can watch it is to get hammered.
Because it requires the least economic investment in order to play it.
I wasn't talking about playing. Worldwide i'm fairly sure its the most watched sport. A few (albeit large) countries such as USA, Canada and Australia do buck the trend. But even in countries like China where the standard of football is very poor, they have the English Premier League. Sky probably makes quite a chunk of its profit off the back of selling football matches to various countries around the world.
While a few sportsmen such as Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Roger Federer amongst others rank very highly and above a lot of top footballers in the sportspeople rich list. I would expect overall football pays more. The money in football is ridiculous. Next season the Premiership TV revenue is going up even more (in no small part down to increased interest from the States.) This article and the amounts of money being talked about is just silly.
NASCAR = Waiting for the wreck to happen
World Soccar = Waiting on someone to make a bad call and get killed for it.....extra pay for beheading and quartering either the ref or player....

I sorta liked a few scenes due to mindless violence, but beyond that? I only liked some of the music.
As a film, meh.

Which was recycled to no end for his later movies. Did no one teach little Hans about self plagiarism?
On topic: I had a whole crowd of El Salvadorians angry at me in Under 8's or 7's, I missed the ball with a kick and did something horrible to their striker's leg (can't remember if it broke in some place or not, I think it may have). I was aiming for the ball, I was just terrible at the whole foot-eye coordination thing, so I missed all the time. It wasn't a bad thing when there wasn't someone standing over the ball, because I could just take another swing. But that time...I felt quite bad, and those parents...woo boy.
