At my FLGS, when Tau got their new codex, suddenly a third of the regular players started showing up with a tau army. When CSM dropped, a few people started including allies. When DA got a new codex, nobody switched to them, but people who had DA armies that had been sitting on the shelf dusted them off to play again. When demons came out... nobody did anything.

Which seems to have been the fate of eldar. There is one person at our store who played eldar on and off over the past several years as he suffered through long years of crummy codices who has a chance to play them now, but otherwise, it's not like anybody new has picked them up.

I'm just kind of curious if this is indicative of the wider world. Has your FLGS seen an uptick in new eldar players, or just some dusty old collections getting brought out (or not even that)?

Couple of my friends are considering eldar allies, but otherwise I've not noticed much. Then again, my group is quite small, and Eldar are seen as My thing

Beside myself and four other whom ahve been with Eldar for a number of yers we have had two more join the fold. Eldar I think appel to a selective group of players, whom is capabel of understanding how one needs to weave ones army togetter to make it shine. But that could just be my experience.

At my LGS a few people who already had large Eldar armies sitting on the shelf brought them out of retirement but I haven't noticed too many new players picking them up nor veteran players switching to them. I have an Eldar collection myself but am sitting this codex out for monetary reasons. With the other armies I have, it would cost too much to bring my Eldar collection in line with the new book. Tough call for me though because I do like the new book.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

At my FLGS they are switching slowly as they come to see the power of mecheldar matches the crons. Just spam serpents, prisms and all those sorts of tanks, the firepower they put with their all twin-linked weapons and extra shots due to their serpent gun things is just too much fire to handle unless you have lots of fair range anti-tank

With the new Iyanden codex and the final arrival of plastic wraithguard I would be all about building a mostly walked based army finally, if it weren't for the continued price rises. I have finally gotten to the point that I am not starting any new GW armies unless something completely new and amazing uber cool appears on the horizon that I just have to get. Don't see them adding any new armies in the short term so don't expect it to happen. Had Tyranid, Ork and Dark Eldar armies in the works and have pulled the plug on all of them and trying to decide if I will keep the DE and orks I have for use as allied forces or what. 'Nids will eventually hit ebay when I get the time. I actually dusted off and rebuilt a previous Dark Angels army incarnation when DV and the DA book came out. Added a few models with the CSM and the Chaos Daemons releases as well. Tau finally look like the high tech shooting army they have supposed to have been from the beginning, but I didn't do anything with them either for the same reason as Eldar. At this stage I will pick up replacement codecies for the armies I have when they get updated, but otherwise I am done. I still enjoy reading white dwarf so I'll stick with that for a while longer too. It is kind of shocking to note that it isn't much more for some forge world models compared to the prices of some of the new plastic kits.

It is crazy because of getting separated at the end of 2010 and eventually divorced I have a LOT of disposable income, but I'm just tired of giving it to games workshop anymore. I used to buy just about every codex to keep up on the changes in the armies and as inspiration to start a new forces. Now I will not buy a codex that doesn't support one of my existing armies. I have built at least one of every 40k army except Tau, some I've built 2 and 3 incarnations of as well. Not any more. The prices have just gotten too stupid. Never thought it would happen for me, but it finally did and it is oddly liberating now that I've made the decision.

I picked up eldar (ordered the core before the book dropped, have bought a little more since).

Two players picked up Eldar *allies* (as strong as Mechdar is, farseers are simply amazing for any Battle Brothers).

Not as strong a change as when Tau came out, but it is noticeable.

Some new pickup. Not much.

Nothing like the tau uptake. Also, DA still holding more people than eldar because of DV I assume.

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

I've seen one guy in one of the two stores I go to bring his Eldar army back out. He says he hates the way the fliers look, but he seemed to like the new codex. In the other store, I haven't seen a single Eldar army on the table for months now, even before the new 'dex. Then again, the 40k scene has been slow in that store.

Eldar seem to have more of a niche appeal in my area. Maybe aesthetics have something to do with it. Why take up flowery space elves when you've got anime styled robots, armored super soldiers, Satanic armored super soldiers, or robot zombies?

Every man and his dog seems to be jumping on the bandwagon at the moment.

Who can blame them either, it is a great codex. Loads of options, loads of flavour, supplement already and I think its going to be very competitive to boot.

Well, that's sort of my point. There HASN'T been a bump in my area.

I mean, I would have expected at least someone in my area to start eldar, but nobody has. I was wondering if that was a fluke or if other places are seeing more like a demon non-bump than a tau ultra-bump.

Well I think the flavor of the month always depends on your area. Personally in my area someone will always pick up the new dex but it won't be a lot of people.

I think that it also depends on what people play in your area before releases because usually there are lots of marine players and when they want to switch they tend to look for what's new and strong.

In this case tau and elder have become pretty awesome armies and can be fielded as allies which might boost sales.
But I feel I'm rambling sorry haha

I noticed Tau are more popular then Eldar. One reason is that many players were either going to go Tau or Eldar (not both) and chose to blow their budgets on the one that came out first.

The main factor however is the age of the eldar models. All the aspect warriors, guardians, and jetbikes are really starting to show their age. These aren't some units that you can skip and wait to see if they get an update..... these are core units that you will have multiple squads of. I guarantee that if jetbikes got a new sculpt, there would have been a massive increase in eldar players.

Eldar came too closely after the Tau, DA and Chaos releases.
There's only so much bandwagoning one person can do.

Eldar does seem to be a popular xenos army, and there are at least 5 people at my club of 30 or so who have some Eldar models. I think there are only 2 of us who bought the new codex, though.

Over here where I play, many players who had Eldar brought them off the shelves and started playing them again (including myself).

So much so some weeks around 5/6 of the 40k tables had Eldar involved in some way.

I think the rapid pace of the new codices precludes some of the bandwagoning we're used to seeing. Eldar has only been out for 6 weeks. Most folks can't get a new army built in that time.

In my area, the four of us that play Eldar still play Eldar. No one new is picking them up. We didn't get a bump for Tau, Daemons, DA or Chaos either.

In my case, I was playing my Space Marines, a bit of Dark Eldar and other company games more before the 2013 codex.

I think I played a small multiplayer game (where I managed to squeeze the old Avatar and Wraithlord into it!) with Eldar.

I know in my local group the Eldar have picked up 2-3 more players since the new Codex. I believe most were waiting for an update to get into the army.

I've seen some mention this, and I agree. Eldar appeal to an experienced gamer looking for a challenging and rewarding army to play.

I got into the game with Eldar back in second edition and played them almost exclusively until the last book basically killed the flavor of the army for me. My 14k of Eldar has largely sat on shelves gathering dust in the last half decade, but I am going to try bringing at least my Iyendan stuff back out with the new additions and see how it plays. I still think two helldrakes ends the entire army, but it will at least be fun to mess around with in casual play.
