I have a strange urge to ask you what brand of coffee you use and is it instant or freshly ground
yes indeed mate! although i only used one spoon of Tesco Instant coffee to a very small amount of water... so not a huge smell... and once the last coat of varnish is on it..... theres no real smell....
shasolenzabi wrote:Coffee for rust, hmmmm.
Not exactly for the rust..... used more as a final oil wash. have a look at a few posts previously..... i had a list of the whole technique if you want to look over it!
Thanks everyone for looking in...... really appreciate all the comments..... last thing to do on this is to add the "Real Rust" final coat and and then figure out how i am going to do the main guns!
Cheers all,

Oh... a small query.... has anyone ever used hot chocolate and Watered down PVA glue to create a mud effect?? I have read about on a couple of different modelers websites..... i am a little unsure.. but hey... might give it a bash!

Hey all!
Taken time away from the Mach as i wanted to try out a couple of diferent techniques and had my 2 tubs of homemade rust i wanted to use....
So..... i had a plan.... a wrecked / destroyed / burned out turret from somthing like an old imperial guard personel carrier... so i knocked up a small turret and got stuck in.....
The order was a light salting across the damage and armour using hairspray to bind.
A grey undercoat....... with a deep red / dark grey overcoat.
Next was the Vallejo Light Rust sponge work and also a lighter mix using the sponge.
Then it was time for my homemade rust..... i used the darker shade first.... addins a little water to a sponge and dabbing onto the turret.... into the over very gentle to dry it out... and then the lighter shade of rust was added to give a bit of depth / texture.
Last thing a little grime of crushed up used matches was used to add a little dirt to the hatches etc.
IMHO it is just as i hoped it would be.... a little coat of matt varnish has dulled it slightly.. but it was horribly messy to handle before i did.....
I hope you guys like it.. any comments would be great.....

Haha.... cheers mate.... yes indeed "Ole Crusty Hide" is now FINISHED!! My first finished model (apart from the tracks).....
Again i used the same technique i listed earlier in the blog..... IMHO.... its not to ba at all.... i might have added a few too many heavy shell marks.. but overall i am really happy i actually got it done!
I think i have actually achieved a very similar finish to the Macharius turret.... so now just need to get stuck in and get that completed now!!
Any comments or critique would be welcomed guys!
Cheers, Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh... just a quick point.... you may notice the designation of the Rhino has gone from 01 to 2!
This is because on my first attempt i dropped a large blob of rust coloured paint on the model!
So had to re-prime and then start over!

Haha.... yeh i know... i started witht he idea of just doing some modelling and painting... but the further i get into things... the more and more bits and bobs i am seeming to collect!
Needed to cut some card tonight so i have started to build up the structure and form of the Fast Assault Carrier i started a while ago..... i think the look of it is as i was hoping..... going to need to make up a couple of sets of tracks and i think an assault ramp on each side of the tank also. The front gun turret is also going to be an issue...... anyone got any ideas for it? I was thinking a gun unit... but i am not too sure........ input would be great!
Also added a pic for scale between the Rhino, Fast Assault and Macharius.
C&C would be cool! Cheers all,

If your going to keep with the turret, put a twin-linked heavy bolter on the front, and run it as a predator + twin heavy bolters.
nice rusting btw, really like the muted colours on the rhino, looks like a write off.

Thanks Mate! Appreciate it.... think i am really close to a technique i am happy with for the damage.... last thing to try is the mud and track units...

Yeh thanks mate.... I am not sold on the turret yet...... not sure if i would prefer to have a mounted heave stubber with some armour and then something heavier at the front end.?!?!?
Having a look at the track units today..... Thinking of going for something A-Symetrical... with an assauly/access ramp on one side and something like a couple of gun ports to the opposite side...... not sure yet...... have a wee image of the idea for the access ramp side..... pretty simple...... but i dont want sponsons on it as i want to keep it light and "sleek" looking.....
Cheers all.....
C&C would really be apprecuated... as i have no real firm idea of where this is going to end up.....

Hi All...
well... I think i have created a "Mocha" Rhino........ thats a Coffee Wash and now a Hot Chocolate & Watered Down PVA Glue!!
I have added the mud effects and also added some ground up graphite to the exhausts of the Rhino......... now i am happy with it so it is done!
Also have had a look at the track units of the Fast Assault Carrier (FAC) and i think its looking pretty good IMHO........ Need to add some armour plating and then some other details i have not thought of yet...... Still stuck wether or not to add the predator turret??? Anyone have any thoughts?!
Also..... i need a name for this creation....... if anyone has one to offer that would be grand!
going to try and get a bit more time on it this evening but would love to hear yout thoughts! Cheers guys! Automatically Appended Next Post: ps. With a coat of Mat Varnish on it the Mud had dulled down slightly.. not quite as shiney.... which is good!

Hey Guys,
thanks for the input! The Agamemnon sounds good... but i think i might keep that name for something larger.... and grander...... perhaps the name of my Macharius.. when i get it done!
I have had a look at some names online.... I quite like the "Estoc" class assault vehicle. (Estoc is a middle ages era thrusting sword) fits quite well i think with the fast assaulting idea behind it....
Any thoughts?!

Sorry, been lurking for a bit.
Good work on the rust / damage. Although the rhino is leaning more towards the "dead" end of the damaged spectrum.
Good build. I think the predator turret looks fine on there. The gun (is that the razorback turret) you have on the front looks a bit big to go there though. Have you tried that on top?

Does look great. Not 100% on the turrets. If it's an APC, not sure it would have such heavy gear. The two you have there at the moment look slightly off balance to me. Kinda if you are going with the lasgun's up front, then the main turret needs to be heavier, but that makes it a main battle tank not an APC. Maybe the front should be a heavy bolter turret, and make the main maybe a missile launcher. That way most of the ammo and tech are outside of the personnel compartment.
Just my two cents. It looks great anyway and with your paint skills will look brilliant.

Hi Mate! Thanks for the comments! And i totally agree... i dont think that Rhino would be going anywhere soon! But i was kind of judt using it to try and sort my technique out so am happy with the results! With regards to the Astoc, I am thinking of creating a drivers compartment in the front instead of the forward turret.... and using the predator turret ontop....... Thinking along the lines of a US Bradley Fighting Vehicle........ any thoughts?

hi Mate..... yes indeed am going to get cracking on the tracks for this and get them running all around..... with only shallow track guards on the hull section so they will mostly be visable.... thanks for the comments!

totally agree mate & thanks for the comments! As i have mentioned earlier.... I am looking at something like the US Bradley Fighting Vehicle... so think i will remove the predators long canon and replace it with something slightly lighter.... and then create a drivers compartment at the front...

Hey All.....
Got cracking with the turret of the Estoc.... added some spaced armour and chopped some of the length off of the barrel to create a shorter canon. The spaced armour needs to be fixed finally... but i think it is looking better and more balanced.
Definetly going with the drivers compartment to replace the forward turret also...... then its on with thte tracks!
All C&C is welcome as always!

Hey Guys!
Thanks for the comment Camkierhi... i agree.. the stubby gun is looking better......
I got the hull finished and primed and also primed the turret..... I am keeping this one nice and simple... so last thing to do is add the doors to the track units and then the tracks themselves.....
Oh.... i also had a thought.... "Thanks to Klaus"... that i quite fancied giving an autogun unit a go...... so i put one together using a heavy bolter and some thin plastic tube..... I think it looks pretty good.. and is a real contender to be able to replace the turret of the Estoc........
Would love to hear your thoughts and comments guys.......
