Ahoy everyone! Hope we all had a good festive period!
I have managed precious little over the last little while amd dont expect to be able to get much more done over the next couple of days... as I have a mountain of HH novels to get through and also found that I am totally addicted to World of Tanks!!!!!
But I did mamage an hour to put together a small terrain piece..... I have used the old burmed out rhino I created for the LoER comp 8 and have added it to a dirt base with some rusted old oil drums and scrub grass..... no real rhyme or reason just fancied an hour on the hobby!
Next up is making the decision on what model to look to purchase .... I really want a breacher squad of MkIII marines (Imperial Fists) and think I am going to invest in a Spartan Assault Tank...... also going to get a load of new paints, weathering kits and accessories..... decisions decisions...
Anyway... take it easy all....

Hey everyone! I hope all is well...
Well the time has come again and there is another LoER competition in our sights!
The theme this time is "What went wrong..." a pretty open and wide scape theme and allready there are lots of brains churning out lots of ideas....
I have a couple of main points I want to aim for on this comp.....
Firstly I would like to get through this comp with £0 input..... apart from a couple of cans of spray paint I want to reuse and rethink where to get a lot of materials from and how to use them.....
My original idea for this is a manufactorum on a planet due for exterminatus.... the planet lies in the way of a crusade of chaos and the planet has been deemed "sacrifice glorianus" ..... in other words.... surpluss to requirements! Before the cyclonic torpedos ravage the planets surface forever.. extra precautions have been taken to ensure the planets valable Manufactorum "Beljis" Doesnt fall into enemy hands....
A strike team has been launched to destroy the forges and seal the doors forever but as the count down reached 0 ... the charges failed to fire... worse still... there were faint energy and heat signatures registered from deep in the facility.... with 0 personel except the troopers of the strike team.... the question was asked.... "What went wrong?!.."
Quick WIP images....... All waste packaging and a couple of little bits and bobs...
Not much to comment on buti would like to hear any thoughts....

First of all think I would like to nominate you for Rustmeister. Your work on the subject has been extensive and as can be seen on that Rhino, bloody amazing!
That Rhino looks incredible, great job.
(What follows is a rant which is totally and utterly NOT directed at MagosBiff90 and his truly brilliant work on that Rhino.)
I do have one question for Dakka though, What is Ceramite, because my thinking is it is a kind of Ceramic Armour plating, and as such all this rustiness we see these days is a bit off? I can believe the IG tanks are all nasty steel lumps and would rust up a treat, but SM stuff is all supposed to be ceramic, so would maybe go a bit white and bubbly but not "rust", PLEASE someone put me right on this.
Sorry.
Now LoER Comp entry, looks AMAZING, sounds AMAZING!! Great idea, nice outside the box thinking, gives a great opportunity for a nice dio that can easily be playable, Can cram in a bunch of painting effects too, weathering, nice chance for some OSL (bulkhead lights etc.) (oh BTW OneManNoodle sells amazing bulkhead lights!!) Lots of textures and surfaces to play with the light., Put in a nice little gantry to add elevation to the scene! Yup excellent start mate. And doing the whole thing as recycled, though tough, is a great way to go.

Ooooooooh I can't wait to see what you come up with here Magos! I'm sure it'll be top-notch.
Camkierhi, I agree with you on that. I don't particularly like overly rusty vehicles to begin with (even if they are Imperial Guard) as they still need to function. Marines shouldn't have a spot of rust on anything since ceramite isn't actually iron based and the fluff rams down our throats how religiously they clean kit...

Thanks very much for the kind words buddy! Really is very much appreciated!
I agree with you actually regarding the Space Marine vehicles... it is an interesting thought to think of what a battle damaged Rhino would actually look like... and in that case.... a battle damaged marine.... with the ceramite etc..... sounds like a challenge after this comp is out of the way!
And thanks also for the comments about the comp.... I have a pretty strong idea as to where I want it to go and a lot of your points are right on! I am thinking this is the point that the strike team will reach an external access door into the Manufactorum.... lots of bits and bobs lying about and a huge blast door in front of them... partially open to allow access and then a couple of gantries and other goodies inside to add a bit of interest and context...

Totally agree mate.... I think the point is valid..... In my thinking.. I just really like the textures and effects of rust and damage...
Thanks Re: the comp.... really going to go for this one as currently this is my sole focus in the hobby!
I think I wil have a go at a "Ceramite Damaged" Rhino after the comp.... but.... that will be after my MkI Macharius as I have already promised inmygravenimage that this will be a fresh from the factory floor Tank!

Thanks my friend! Yeah I am happy with the packaging.... it is actually the 2 end pieces of packaging from my new printer!
And thanks... yes indeed it is meant to be a long forgotten casualty of war left behind to rot by a defeated and evacuating force!

Good work on the rusty tank.
Looking forward to where the accident goes.
As for Ceramite. I believe (and could be wrong) that it's explained as a sort of cross between a ceramic and a metal. I think the idea being (from the people that brought you depleted deuterium because it sounded cooler than uranium) that it's harder than metal but not as brittle as ceramics.
Being that you don't need to change steel that much to make it corrosion resistant, it probably shouldn't rust. But then damaged SM tech' wouldn't look half as interesting...

Well, the end packing for printers works well for a 2 storied building as far as I am concerned! Good choice for recycling/re-purposing.
The effects used have worked their intended function, well executed!

Hey all... Had a little time on the LoER comp..... had a bit of a change around in composition.... got a couple of options here I would love some opinions of..... same as previously with the entrance to the facility and goimg to have plenty of machinery amd other details... but I am having an issue with how to work the storyline amd the actual competition theme into the piece.... as the story goes.... there would be no real trace of the incident on the outside so it turns into solely a terrain piece with the only link being the story..... so I am thinking of blasting the main door to show an incursion instead... anyway..... would love some feedback or comments! Thanks all!

Prefer the second set up pictured.
Well you could have your team going back in through the entrance, which would look like somethings been "through" it. And have the open section of roof as a blasted out section, with the explosion either still happening or happened minutes ago.

Thanks buddy! Yeh I tend to agree with you. The second option gives more variety and a better atmosphere. And I think thats the way to go. Blasted out front door and a caved in roof.... stoll a lot of potential for changes in level and a lot of cover.....

Being that it's going to be built of that packaging, the second setup would be easier for photography. If you were to detail in interior of the first, and it's all interior, then it'll be tricky to get good photos without a removable wall/roof (as it's all one piece).

Thanks Dr H
Yeh I am leaning towards the 2nd setup... it feelsbetter somehow...
Going to throw in some damage to the main door and some wreckage from the roof and then just go with that..... then I guesss the story will still fit.
The large piece of foam at the edge will be a rock wall with the main door leading into it..... going to have exposed piping running under ground and then need to think of a way to add an upper level in....
Thanks for the input!

Remember to tell a story in the model. Little clues to what happened will elevate it from a damaged building, to the wake of an accident, which it what the competition calls for.

Lab accidents are even more interesting in real life, even the small ones (and thankfully I've not been involved in any big ones).

Haha... I do like the idea of an "interesting" lab accident! Dr H
A lab accident might be a good way to go..... was maybe thinking of having some broken holding tanks and some holes in the main door and walls to indicate that whatever had been held there had escaped out.... Will have a look at it this evening!
Thanks again for the comments folks!

Report: "Test subjects 21 through 30 have escaped containment, I suspect their sedative feeds were cut off, allowing them to regain full consciousness and enact their escape through their sheer power, either by brute muscle power, to the mental ability of the others. they must now be hunted down and brought to a more secure facility. Investigations are now under way as to who cut the sedatives and why they did so."

This certainly sounds like a good way to go...... I am thinking also of the story in the HH Novel "NEMESIS" when the Imperials are getting together their assassination squad and they "Accidentally" awaken and set loose a very dangerous Eversor Assassin named the Garantine! .... who then proceeds to work through the entire holding facility where he has been in stasis, killing every living thing within its walls! He is a bad ass character and am thinking of going with this idea for the comp..... he has finished with those inside and now making his break out from the facility..... or has recently done so!

Late to the party, but agreeing that the second set-up works far better for this.
Damaged holding tanks...a trail of destruction....escape route through the broken skylight......
That seems a good way to go about telling the story of the 'accident', with the ground team coming in through the main entrance to find out what's been going on.

Hi mate, thanks for popping by!
Yeh that's definetly the way I want to go.... going to try and switch up my usual act and have all of the damage and destruction going on in the "inside" of the building bursting out..... to show the mayhem that has occurred... walls blown out etc.... but with the main door intact... just got to get some time to get the idea out there and in foam board! lol

Thanks mate.... it is actually 2 lids from deodorant cans... going to add some metal strips and rivets and then show it broken open... the base is just some random part I found in the shed.
Having seen the main door this morning it actually looks pretty naff!! going to need a lot of work to get it up to scratch! But... got a lot of other structure and parts to get done before that!
Oh... I have found a great piece to have as the main "armourglass" roof piece..... a packet I got from sliced cheese! Automatically Appended Next Post: GGGrrr.... the more and more I look at that door the more and more it is annoying me!!!
I think the base structure is fine... but those metal straps I have added look terrible... I will try and remove them tonight, failing that I will make another!
Mini rant over...... back to work!

i personally like the doors (they have a kind of orky feel), but they seem a bit out of place in a building hi-tech enough to have stasis pods for storing dangerous criminals...something sleek/futuristic would fit better, IMHO. but that's just my two cents. between you and red harvest, i've been eyeballing every strofoam packaging form more closely know, wondering, "what can i do with that?
