Exactly what it says on the tin. My brother and I are having a discussion over whether a Chaos Lord (or any other leader) could sit on the back of a Heldrake and ride it like a mount. Could this happen or is it just too crazy? Your thoughts.

That's probably similar to trying to ride an airplane, given that heldrakes used to be planes that mutated.

They are Chaos Lords... they can do whatever they want...

It'd be a seriously hazardous form of transport, even by 40k standards...

Only if the Lord is on a scale of Badassery equalling Doomrider - I'd like to see a conversion of this though, would be awesome

Would it be practical? No.

Would it be easy to take seriously? No.

Would it make much sense? No.

Is it awesome? HELL FETH YES IT IS.

If an Ork Warboss can loot a Carnifex and use one as his personal steed (which to my knowledge has not happened but im sure someone has made a conversion), im sure a Lord can ride a Helldrake .

If he could tame the Heldrake, then certainly.

Fluff behind this is that the Chaos Lord rides it into battle like a dragon mount. If I wrote fair rules for this, could my brother use it in friendlies? Would that be fair?

As long as both of you agree to it then yes you can .

Remember 40k is a casual game that you make a ton of stuff for, even your own homebrew codex's if you really wanted so long as all players accept to have a game with them .

Could he? Yes, probably.
Should he? Yes, definitely.

You could certainly do it, but in-game what purpose would it serve? Hellderakes can't hover can they? Therefore the Chaos Lord would basically be stuck in the air shouting.

I would, however, direct you to the excellent Double Eagle by Dan Abnett that has a rather nice representation of senior Chaos aircrew. Hellblades and Helltalons rather than Helldrakes, but the idea spans I think.

they were planes? I thought they were daemon engines. A husk of metal that a warpsmith made and then summoned a daemon to live inside.

Heldrakes were originally fighter aircraft (well, that's what I meant when I said planes, but admittingly many Wh40k fighter aircraft aren't very plane-like) where the pilot became so obsessed with his job that the plane and pilot merged and mutated into a dragon. And got a mind of its own. ....it's not very pleasant for the pilot.

I could imagine a Khorne lord riding one. With an enormous axe.

I don't see why not.

I was going to say it's insane and too dangerous, but Chaos APCs sometimes eat the people they are transporting. And people are still willing to get in them.

I would assume the Chaos Lord would have to know the Bend Will shout though....

They have the Hover rule. You rarely see them use it as they often want to go as fast as possible.

This, if they have greater demons in their swords, why not?
