How will the Taudar manage in the Invitational?
0-5 They fail to win a game against the tough competition.
1-4 It is a rough run but I manage to win one.
2-3 I cant quite make it above .500.
3-2 It isnt exactely what I came to do but at least I came out positive.
4-1 Fail to get the job done but its a damn strong outing.
5-0 I manage to pull out some luck and sweep my first invitational.

My list said that the dire avengers had lance and the guardian serpents had scatter lasers. I played the entirety of the tournament with black wave serpents as guardians which made it one of each weapon type for each of my troops. Which was my original intent. Color makes it easier to differentiate squads. What he tried to do is after my turn 1 argued that my list said otherwise and wanted my unit moved to that transport so he could blow it up and kill them off. Never seen that before. i understand my error on the list and fully understand his reasoning of you play as your list states. Had he pointed it out to me pre-game I could of accommodated him even though I had played it the other way for the duration of the tournament. Waiting until i conclude my turn and then asking for the clarification at the beginning of his was imo bad form. Listening to the audio he had known of the issue but had waited to voice it. Either way it was ruled on and didnt effect the outcome beyond taking time from the game.

Saying that it was bad form? You're giving him a large dose of "the benefit of doubt". I think he was chancing his luck.

If he knew about it then he should have asked at the start or before you moved.

Cheers

Alright! With me losing and Aaron winning we avoided being matched up and one of us still had a chance to win the event. My opponent now is Nick and his Daemons/CSM.

Mission:
Primary: The scouring(3 on center line, 1 in each deployment zone)
Secondary: Table Quarters
Tertiary: Slay the warlord, line breaker, Kill points
Deployment: Dawn of war

Opponent: Nick Nanavati
His army: Chaos Daemons with CSM allies

HQ:
Kairos Fateweaver
Keeper of secrets (2x greater, ML 2)
Daemon Prince of Tzeentch (Black Mace, wings, power armor, gift of mutation) CSM

Troops:
10 Plaguebearers of Nurgle w/ plagueridden
10 Daemonettes of slaanesh w/ alluress
10 chaos cultist

Fast attack:
Heldrake, baleflamer

Heavy Support:
Daemon Prince of Slaanesh (Daemonic Flight, Warp-Forged Armour, Greater Reward, exalted reward, ML 2)
Daemon Prince of Slaanesh (Daemonic Flight, Warp-Forged Armour, Greater Reward, exalted reward, ML 2)

Pre-game Analysis: I am feeling pretty confident going into this one. He pretty much has MSU with some big guys that can really dish it out. The biggest thing I think I have on this list is that it only has 3 troops. If I can kill off a couple of his MC's I can then turn my focus to his troops and kill them off not giving them the cover they need to survive. The grimiore can really make things difficult but only one model can take it per turn and it has to go off as well. This is one of the few games I woundnt mind going first on to shoot up some of his MC's before he can boost them up.

Thoughts and predictions?

Post Game Analysis and Results:
Spoiler:
Unfortunately, this game never happened. Nick asked if it was okay if he dropped after failing his grimiore 3 turns in a row against Aaron. He needed a couple of drinks. I wasnt going to hold him for a game that held no significance so on paper I got the win but the match was never played. So officially I was 4-1 at the invitational when in fact I was 3-1 and one bye. Though I liked my chances against the daemons for the very reason they lost in his last match up. Imho they are just no consistent enough to survive a GT.

Well since I didnt give you the 5th round. Here is the finals as recorded by 11th company. Aaron is the Taudar and Jesse is the farsight tau. http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/38123637

It was kind of a running joke that if he won I would buy him a sangria!

Eldau vs Chaos/CSM is almost a coin flip of a matchup. Daemons normally matchup better against Eldau/Tau than many of the other armies. This matchup is going to come down to 3 things:

1. Terrain.

2. Who's going first.

3. Can Nick keep his FMC's in the air?

Whoever gets 2 of the above 3 in his favor will have the advantage in the game. And knowing the Nova terrain, I'd say #1 favors Nick.

Seconded, I imagine it's probably just a greater and an exalted each though and a mis-type/mistake on entering the army list.

Gotta say, that was some horrible luck for Nick... Failing 3 turns in a row? Ouch!

I don't think that should warrant a drop-out though..... Was it like that for all his games?

I'm not surprised. They had to play 13 games over 3 days. Now that's an endurance test. If the game doesn't mean anything, then perhaps it's better to get some rest. A lot of the participants actually dropped out when they were out of the running on the last day. Either that or get burnt out forcing yourself to play another game when all you really want to do is to get some shut-eye.

QFT! I was not excited for another game either because as I said it meant nothing. The only reason I would want to play it is to secure the 4 wins I predicted I would get before the event started and to play Nick whom I hear is a pretty damn good player. I have dropped before too. There is no shame in it if you run yourself into the ground playing a real competitive event. Especially if there are other things to do. Like watch the finals where possibly one of your buddies are playing it out.

Thanks, they definitely take time and a lot of energy to put out.

I dont think so. Just this round was on the last day after 13 or so games as mentioned above.

No by the time I got to him he had already had a couple and it wouldnt of been good to try and play at that point.

Tournament Results, Review, and Army assessment:

Results:
Spoiler:
Tournament Champion: Aaron Aleong
Renaissance Man: Matt DeFranza
Ironically I outscored the opponent I lost to on battle points so theoretically beat him in the rankings with the same record and more BP. Final record 4-1
I didn't escape without a prize though. I won the hotel raffle receiving $250 which is like winning a GT.

Also as promised:

I had to buy him his sangria or equivalent for avenging my defeat.

Review:
Spoiler:
Location: (A+) I loved the hotel. Had an amazing deal on rooms and was located in a good area with shuttles both to the airport and the metro. This allowed me and the wife to go sight seeing a lot in the days running up to the event. In addition, the service from the hotel was great. One negative is the 4th floor ice machine didnt work . But other then that it was good. The only other thing was I guess the elevators were sometimes hard to come by especially during the event when so many people needed to go up or down to their respective rooms. I would stay at the Hyatt Regency again next year and recommend it to anyone that is attending.

Staff/Judging: (A+) Had no issues with the staff. Everyone was professional and on point with any situation that arose. The judges made decisions and they were final and both players moved on. There wasnt any instances that I saw where judges made decisions and then had that decision be changed several times as it was debated. If it was in question they looked up the rules in both the rulebook and the faq before making the quick decision. The system Torrent of Fire managed the event well and the staff was readily available to answer any and all questions that you had.

Prize Support: (A+) Their prize support is second to none. The only downside is with so many prizes comes a lengthy ceremony to hand it all out. I dont think people complain too much especially if they win. On top of this they had random give a ways in which just about everyone remaining at the end of the event got free prizes.

Vendors: (B+) The vendors were pretty good and had a couple of deals. I believe they are currently building up the amount of vendors in the years to come.

Army Assessment:
Spoiler:

Jetbike Farseer: (A) A fast moving denial unit that can score in some games. The only issue I had with him is he was stuck with my broadsides. If they died then my warlord is out in the open and/or dead already. He kind of just sat around most games and cast his buffs.

Tau Commander: (A+) Still an auto include for any competitive tau list. This guy killed a wraithknight with an onager gauntlet. His ability to give tank hunter/monster hunter and ignore cover just make the shooting phase that much better.

Troops:
Guardians: (B) They are nice but if they get out of their transport then its a rough day fast. GEQ with better rules essentially.

Dire Avengers: (A-) Having only 5 hurts their effectiveness but they are cheap and are a necessary tax for the ride they fly around in. The 4+ save is decent but their leadership 9 is why I like them so much more then the guardians.

Wave Serpent (A+) This vehicle is stupid good. I felt kind of bad at times playing with them. They ignore basic rules mechanics like cover. They can move 12" and still fire two weapons. They have a 5+ jink save. They have a shield that if not fired can turn all the pens into glances. Oh and BTW its a transport. GW!

Kroot: (B) They could outflank and were cheap. Need I say more?

Heavy:
Broadsides: (A+) Keeping with these guys despite everyone knocking me for them. I love the railgun even if it isnt what it used to be its still S8 AP1 60" range, ignores cover, and TH/MH. They can kill troops off of back objectives pretty easy as well. I like this units versatility.

Lance Warwalkers: (A) These guys were nice but I felt the lance didnt really do as well as I had hoped in some cases and it almost required a psychic power to get twin linked to make them real effective. Either way they can outflank and cause some havoc. Not to mention a 5+ invul save makes them durable.

Scatter Warwalkers: (A+) I loved these guys. 24 shots of pure dakka that could and would be hitting any rear armor you gave me. In addition, they can really kill off some troops. You have a 3+ save. Take it I have 24 shots heading your way that wound most things on a 2+. Also they are decent against MC's. This unit gives my army the punch the army kind of lacks.

Overall List: (A+) I really like this list and it seemed to flow pretty well. I was originally weary of taking a list with no templates but it handled itself well game after game. I felt I could win any match with this list and often missed having it while playing the open. I would run this list again in the current meta in a heartbeat. Matter of fact a variation of it is going to the feast of blades tournament. Hope you all enjoyed the report and I will try harder to get more pictures next time. Also at any event I will wear a shirt with Tomb King on the back. Swing by and say Hi and talk tactics or list and I am usually more then willing to offer my advice or opinion on the matter. Plus its always nice to meet some of the online aliases.

Nice reports! Are you going to Feast this year? If so, maybe we can mock each other's lists when it's over again, as I'll probably be taking 3 Dreadknights there too!

Also, thanks for letting me keep my army in your room a couple times - it really made life easier on me! Look forward to reading more of your stuff, and maybe seeing you at another big event soon!

Ill let you know now that you probably don't wanna match up againste again then haha. I should be at feast of blades. As for the army thing. No problem. As a guard player I know it can be painful trying to transfer an army especially for prolonged distances.
