I have been playing IG for a few years now, and they are by far my favorite army. I am getting bored with my melta/plasma vet spam. Thought I would ask the world of Dakka what they use with Imperial Guard. Specifically geared towards new Codices.
I usually have at least 1 basilisk and on Manticore in my army. That is accompanied by 3 vendettas, vet spam, marbo, CCS with plasmas (including commander with plasma). I use that commander to issue orders to him self to add an additional threat... specifically towards monstrous creators.
Anyone having luck with other things?
What LR variants are you running? I have been staying away from them as of late.
I wanted to also add a poll to this... feel free to feel it out.

You may benefit greatly from a naked infantry platoon to bubble wrap against charges and to ride vendettas to grab forward objectives.

It was my first army. I just enjoy being a human in the world of advance beings.
My other army is GK, I started it a little after the IG army. I ran them together before they took that away in 5th edition.
They are hard to play now. What army are you currently playing?
I am hoping that IG get a new codex early next year!!

I mostly play a foot-list with 80+ infantry, 20-30 vets, and the same number Stormtroopers to add a mobile element. For the single Russ I normally run, I have really started liking the LC/PC Vanquisher. Yes, it's expensive but can hurt vehicles, MCs, TEQ and MEQ brutally well. Add Pask for even more fun.
If you're looking for something different to run, perhaps a little outside the norm, then check out the link in the second line of my sig, it has a unit-by-unit analysis of the entire codex and you just might find something in there you hadn't considered before.
If you're looking for a list that is a bit more fun than vet-spam, but still reasonably competitive, try a list using vets/platoons on foot, and then maximum stormtroopers. You will have a lower model count, but the ST can put a real dent in any target en masse, and give the otherwise static army some great mobility.

I like my drop troops. Air support and sentinels backing up Demolitions vets leaping from Valkyries, Stormtroopers hitting the back line, Marbo assassinating something important before dying messily, and a smattering of regular troopers and plasma vets forming a firebase in the back field.
Does a lot of damage to things that don't like demo charges, although it can have trouble if the enemy manages to rush forward.

started to build a mechanized infantry platoon army i am still convinced that it will work. currently working on an armored battle group list tank heavy with just infantry squads in chimeras. no veterans have six lemun russ's in an 1850 point army. with four iron fist squads.

I had once used Alrahem (sp) to outflank an entire platoon in chimeras. Added in some LR variants, 1 basalisk and a few melta vets ... It was pretty legit. It was back in 5th ed though. I mean 6 chimeras coming onto your flank can be a bit overwhelming.

Ahaha, someone sounds a little butthurt.
I'm building a foot horde backed by static artillery. If you're looking for variety in IG, there is a ton of stuff from Forge World in the form of units and lists.

A lot of people will not allow FW models onto the table where I play (at least for tournaments). That being said... I have thought about bringing back my infantry. I currently have 20 squads or 200 men to fight with. That seems like a decent amount of guys. I may work on a list like that.

Well if i may ask what point level do you play at? I use both gunline and mech guard lists. In my foot guard i got 2 ccs with lascannons and standards and then i have 2 platoons, 8 infantry squads with lascannons and melta guns. The pcs hve 4 flamers and act as a counter charge unit. Theres then 2 vendettas with a flamer vet squad in each with demolitions tasked with killing scary Death Stars and grabbing objectives. Then for heavies i have 2 vanquishers with lc/pc combo. All tht behind a defense line and a quad.
In a mech list i run a ccs with plasma, 2 more plasma vet squads and 3 more melta vet squads, all in chimeras. 2 vendettas and 2-3(cant remember) vanqs with lc/pc combo.
So thats my mech and gunline lists at 2k.
As you see i use the vanquisher russ with lc/pc. I normally am fine with running standard lrbts as they are my favorite(pissed they lost lumbering behemoth so i cant upgrade them effectively) But now i run these vanqs as they can take on enemy heavy armor at a distance, and as the enemy closes the pc'a add firepower to lighter armor. And hopefully at any closer and the enemy is slodging it up the board. All the weapons are ap2 so the tank makes anything teq or mech units that deepstrike in sight second guess themselves. The plasma sponsons allow the tank to put more wounds on geq horde. The tank is probably one of the best multi role russes that actually is effective.

I usually play between 1750-2000. We do not usually do double force org though. Anyways, here is my main list for the tourney coming up. Go check it out and let me know what you think. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/550483.page

Yea i dont do double foc myself, only time is if i want to play a russ heavy list in which i use 4 vet squads and 2 lord commissars, i think a vendetta or 2 and the rest of the list is usually russes but thats for 2k and above so its not normally used and also because my group is usually competitive.
Ive been following that thread, the second list is much better. I suppose the voxes are alright but there isn't much else you could put the points towards.
When is the tourney? And you will have to let us know how the list turns out. The gunline foot guard list i have above was built by paradigm and i. Ive tested it out 3 times already and its had great success so far against some armies. Only defeat so far was against a eldar with tau allies shenanigans. But i made some mistakes that brought my defeat.

Pretty much all tanks/flyers. IG are the crazy counter army to me. Swiss army knife. Every counter known to mankind kinda deal. I love the fact that the same basic tank has so many different load outs. Plus love the artillery choices. So thats what i stick with. Infantry stay in the chimera. Trying to snag some Hydras to add to it.

I am starting to build my IG army. I currently, and will still, play Tau, and originally picked up a few IG units to use as allies. And then I bought a bunch of IG units from a friend that was changing army, and then another friend sold me a bunch of IG stuff he bought at a yard sale. So I haven't exactly broken down an army list on to what everything will represent, but it is going to balance out I think between foot and armor.
So far I have:
1 Command Squad
1 Platoon Command Squad
6 10-man squads of infantry
7 2-man heavy weapon teams
3 Leman Russ Tanks
3 Chimeras
1 Scout Sentinel
1 Basilisk
1 Valkyrie
1 Vulture
I am waiting on a squad of Storm Troopers to arrive and trying to decide what else will go into my Elite slots next.

Ratlings were never good. We have heavy weapons, Russes, arty, plasma vets, Vendettas, etc to deal with MCs. That and the models are gaktastic too, IMO.
I personally love running an armoured company list. Russes as troops? Yes please. Sure you're looking to table or lose every game, but it's a lot of fun to play... take if you love the phyrric victory (or just plan on playing annihilation type missions). Forgeworld not allowed? Take a couple of vet squads and fill the rest with Russ squadrons. Naked blobs with Russ support can work well too, though a Lord Commissar really helps to keep then from running.
Actually, I wonder if a speedwing of Hellhound variants could work. Same principal as the Russ squadrons, just with Hellhounds, and Devil dogs instead. Banewolves depending on amount of MEQ in the meta.

I field a primaris psycher, three vet squads with demolitionist in chimeras, a hydra, three vendettas, a command squad with plasma, and two more vet squads with carapace armor and plasma. The plasma guys going in the vendetta of course. I also commonly use an outflanking sentinel squad and often incorporate rough riders as well.
I have fun with it, and most guys have fun playing me. There is a lot going on, and I move around a lot. Keeps things interesting.

+1 to talore. Currently working on adding enough troops to make my build of this viable. I find that a lot of people underestimate the sneaky little lascannons you put in EVERY squad.

My Airborne or Air Cav list that I run with my Elysians is alot of fun for the sole purpose that everything is quite random and big risks are a name of the game. I run a Vet heavy list which may be to similar to your current one, however there is still alot you can do with the army in regards to deep striking Veterans (when using Forgeworld Rules) or Storm Troopers, playing with either little or no vehicles of any kind, ect. A great theme for a fun army if you feel like gambling a little

I would consider putting Marbo in an Elite slot. It is rather affordable and a great addition to any army. In my last game against Tau I just brought him in behind cover, but I usually get to blow something up! It is a fun elite choice!
