I looked up the flea too, and what do you know, you guys are correct. I retract my flea complaint.

If it had been a giant bedbug, on the other hand, it would've been WAY too thin . . .

@ mu - go on! no money is actually taken until after the kickstarter has finished so even if you haven't got the cash now its still worth pledging... can always change your mind at a later date and pull out.

Jump in. AFAIK, This is the first big miniatures KS of a licensed property, and it appeals to only a very small group of people. I doubt we'll see a MA! KS ever again. I've seen a Mars vs. Earth miniatures KS, but that's not the same as Mars Attacks!

The KS focuses on the new MA! comic. I dropped out because I wasn't as attracted to the stretch goals as I thought I would be, but don't let that stop you from pledging! Might jump back in once the Reaper KS is done.

Some cool giant mutant bug designs:

Spoiler:

These are for the new cards but maybe they will show up in the KS?

I hope so. This pulp junk from the comics is lame.

some of that stuff appears in the video so i imagine it'll get done.

Dont understand your problem with the stuff from the comics though.

also, new pics are up for the stretch goals that might be coming up... one's a flying stand (saucer? bug? chopper?), the other... no idea?

I think that stuff is boring and extraneous but more crucially it's off-message in terms of brand. There are any number of opportunities to make generic pulp miniatures but really only one opportunity, this opportunity, to realize Mars Attacks as a board game/war game.

As far as Topps is concerned, the new comics and cards are the brand.

The new comics really are pretty good, too... the humour is subtle and dark.

If that's true (source?) it's a mistake as far as the comics go. Each iteration of Mars Attacks comics has proven transient while the original card series remains iconic. The new card series seems to fit really well with the original one -- but stuff from the new cards are nowhere to be found in this KS so far. Even in terms of this KS itself, a lot of this stuff is way offbrand. What part of the battle for Anytown USA implicates a Mayan tribesman with a gatling gun? Or Judge Dredd? Do you want a Martian dressed as Optimus Prime as well?

Don't get me wrong -- I don't mind Judge Martian. I just think that's something for later in the KS after stuff like the Martian in "Terminator Armor" from the new card set is accounted for.

The new trading cards are directly linked to the comics, they tell the story of the invasion as it happens in the comics.

In fact, a lot of the comic panels are just the new trading cards, so there's a very tight link there.

What comics are you talking about? IDW's Mars Attacks has been going for a while now and the new cards aren't even out yet. Have you actually read these comics?

Also do you have a source for any of these claims?

I was able to find here that the comics tie into the card set but that's hardly the same as the comics telling the story of the cards. Also, I'm pretty sure none of the cards feature art from the comics. I believe I read the whole 100-card set consists of original paintings (trying to find the source).

Yes, I have read them.

Here's some examples of how the new cards fit into the comics (taken from IDW's public previews of the comics)

Spoiler:

That should give some idea about how they're combining the new cards with the comics... the cards tell the same story that is laid out in the comics, and the cards are inserted as panels into the comic series.

It's all in chronological order, telling each story in a set of 5 comics from start to finish.

There are cards with the giant flea and the aztecs on them too, can't show you them because they're not part of the previews, but they're in there.

The first comic arc tells the origin story of Zar who is featured heavily in the artwork shown of the new cards. Cant' link directly but his first card but it can be seen here -

He is the main ongoing villain in the comics (which is why he features in the comic addon pack in the Kickstarter).

Yes! More Martian stuff is exactly what I'm after. I hope the stem in the last teaser is some kind of Martian thing, whether saucer or whatever.

Read the comics, thought they were horrible. So needless to say I will not be picking up the comic based pack. I might pick up Zar just to have another Martian though.

The cards in the comic aren't the cards in the new trading card set, and I think people are getting the two mixed up.

The new trading cards are all painted, just like the originals. I know they featured a lot of mutants and the usual giant bugs in them. Also, Stan Lee striking Martians with typewriters.

Maybe there's multiple sets of cards?

Regardless we should see the new stretch soon. Maybe we'll get an angry Stan Lee figure too.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

I'm not a big Mars Attacks fan and I'm only tenuously holding my pledge in the KS - but I agree with Manchu in that the Martians themselves are the coolest aspects, and there's should be more of them instead of Machinegun Mayans and such.

Agreed!

I'm starting to lose interest here - Mantic need to sharpen their focus for a little while on this one!

So there seems to be a few people in this thread who really know their Mars Attack fluff. I've brought into this Kickstarter as I want the Martians as a counts as Necron army. I know the flying saucers will double up as the Night Scythe/Doom Scythe and the walkers will be fine as Triarch Stalkers, but I need something to counts as the Wraiths, what do the Martians have that will do for that?

What size bases are Wraiths on? There might be some giant flying wasps / bugs later in the campaign which could do the job?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Mantic also just hinted that flying Martians are on the way so perhaps they could also be a possibility.

I would expect the flying insects to be on a similar size base them so they might be a viable option.

Picked up an EB2 for this, but only as an insurance against awesome stuff later. At this point I only really want one of the mats and some bombed out walls (would make a cool mini post-apoc set up I think), so I'll probably drop down.

However, I was going to pass this by completely so they've at least done something right getting me to look into it.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”
