I suppose I should have been more specific. Yes there would have been hateful things said, but they would have nothing to do with ethnicity and her citizenship wouldn't have been questioned. Most likely they would have just called her fat and ugly. Saying that an American isn't really an American because of their skin color is a distinct kind of hate.

First world problem. Sorry I can't get worked up about Twitter posts and someone spreading that to all of the US, without noting...er she won.

Racism is in every country in the world unfortunately we Americans and the media like to show it off on TV and social media "for ratings" instead of actually trying to put a stop to it

Eh, 314,000,000 people in the country, a handful of idiots posting on twitter doesn't exactly exhibit a problem. I've seen first hand in many other countries that true racism is alive and well, and most often times openly accepted.

I'm racist. I freely admit the Team Wiener Dog's arguments for a final solution for the "cat problem" are quite compelling. Strangely even the squirrels agree.

A cursory glance at Miss America wikipedia page shows that an African American won as recently as 2010 and 2004. There have been 8 total from what I read. I could only read so far until I got bored.

Why is anyone shocked at Twitters response? Did anyone watch The Roast of James Franco? Casual racist jokes about Aziz Ansari's ethnicity were the norm from the professionals, but a few tards on twitter is more offensive? I get that its a Roast and they can be, and are meant to be pretty ruthless, but we call it entertainment nonetheless so why are we suprised when some asshats carry the torch onto twitter?

I think its all a plot by the MA organization to generate buzz and money (else no one would have known it was on).

You cant put an enmasse stop to racism. Every country on the planet has it to some degree or another We can teach our children to give everyone a fair shake (which is what I do) and hope that future generations get it, but as a whole, this is a part of the human makeup. Hell, in some areas of the world, the racism extends past skin color and into tribal affiliation.

All the regulation/legislation etc in the world wont stop it. It's a parent to child thing: teach them to look beyond the things that make us different and instead focus on the things we share as a human race.

Take the new Miss America. She is gorgeous, I dont feel the need to categorize her as "brown". So what if some imbecilic twits on Twitter need to focus on her ethnicity? Ignore them. Reposting their stupidity only exacerbates the situation as those targeted might think that the twits represent a larger segment of the population than they do, causing the victims to develop their own racism towards the twits.

Just treat each other with respect, stop being "phobes".

Correct, you can't legislate racism away, it is a natural instinct.

Legislation has two objectives, however:

1. To teach people that racism is unacceptable, thereby reducing racism by people who have better control of their instincts.

2. To punish and hopefully prevent actual racist abuses.

As can be seen in outbreaks in Europe, especially antisemitism. Legislation may only mask or force the racism into hiding, but then it rears it's head violently from time to time.

Yeah, I read a story about a "Miss America contestant who had her tats out", and immediately read it, increasingly irritated that the headline did not have a typo in it after all.

If the tweets were just racist people being angry because somebody that is not the same race as them won, then it wouldn't even be half as annoying. But there are two reasons it annoys me.

1) There are racists, and then there are just ignorant uneducated racists. And the majority of tweets are the second half. Come on people, if you get worked up enough about somebody that you hate their entire race at least show enough dedication to know what it is you actually hate. If you start typing and sending stuff that makes it clear that you think that being brown means you are an Arab or a Muslim then you just make our own race look like idiots. Be committed enough to your racism to actually hate people in an accurate factual manner instead of this garbage.

2) All the "This is America, and she is Brown!" "Miss America should be white" with a touch of "the soldier should have won, she loves America!" just reeks of white nationalism to me.

But whatever. I'm gonna go to my half-brown baby and my brown wife and celebrate being an awesome family.
