A Russian official blasted “American exceptionalism” in a tweet Monday morning, saying the deadly shooting at Washington’s Navy Yard confirms the worst about the U.S.

“A new shootout at Navy headquarters in Washington — a lone gunman and 7 corpses. Nobody’s even surprised anymore,” tweeted Alexey Pushkov, a member of the Russian parliamentary foreign affairs committee.

“A clear confirmation of American exceptionalism,” he added.

The comment — met with disgust on Twitter Monday, as the situation at Navy Yard continues to unfold — is a reference to the recent New York Times op-ed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the piece, Mr. Putin blasted American exceptionalism and admonished Americans to remember that God has created everyone equal.

Like Mr. Pushkov’s tweet, Mr. Putin’s comments fueled outrage from U.S. lawmakers and many others.

Nations with a history of mass executions by the state and a murder rate that was recently better then triple the country they're criticizing... probably should mind their own glass walls before playing the stone throwing game.

Considering that there are people here that didn't even wait a day to make political comment about the situation are we really going to get all up in arms about politicians that do it as well?

Yes. Just because someone else acted like a dick doesn't mean we should turn a blind eye to others doing it.

Right... so, I called out people here making political statements about it stupid. I called out Russians making political statements stupid. What more should I do to avoid being a hypocrite. Please enlighten me.

You would first have to show where I singled you out and called you specifically a hypocrite; it is hard to refute something I haven't done. I didn't mention any specific individuals because I am referring to general trends, not individual acts. People using the incident to score political points (in this case either for or against firearm legislation) but then turning around and getting all pissy when someone else also uses it to score political points is fairly disingenuous. Noting that does not target any specific individual, just a problem in the way the situation is being approached.

Not that I'm defending said politician/tweets. He's free to say what he likes, and in turn be called a donkey-cave over it. Perhaps some form of lasting reprimand, assuming anyone higher up in the Russian government gives a feth about what the underlings are saying.

But some of the allusions here are pretty crass.

Compared to Russia we're having a "tiff" with our gays. We even let them marry in many places.

We (our government) didn't mock them. We berated them for not coming to us for help when we were the only ones with proven technology to rescue that crew. Russia put pride over the lives of their Sailors, and it was wrong to do so.

Yep. That was a lot of lives that we could have saved. I like to think that my government wouldn't put pride over the lives of myself and my crewmates if we were in a similar situation.
