I think floggings with a loving intent aren't abusive when directed at one's children, or with the intent of providing feedback and correction to one's subordinates.

Tie'em to the mast and give'em a taste of the lash! They'll soon mend their ways.

Absolutely. We already issue disciplinary beatings, they're just off the record.

I was told they were completely recreational so they did not need to be recorded... I am so confused...

Well that all depends on the state.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

I'm not sure beating your child really improves anything first of all it's teaching you kids that you can accomplish things through violence, it doesn't teach the kid why the bad behaviour is bad instead he/she is just reacting to the situation because of the beating not because he/she

understands good or bad behaviour, it also encourages lying as the kid doesn't understand what good behavior is and can bypass the beating by doing the bad behaviour outside the parent's vision and it's too much pain for a child to be taking both psychologically and physically.

I dunno, for one both of you are a clearly being a little dense, because that was so over the top as to be leaking sarcasm. However I assure you idiots that having received a whupping when I needed it myself along with a careful explanation of why I was about to get the punishment I'd earned, I learned to distinguish bad and good quickly.

As a person that was spanked, when I was bad little fether, I can tell you that in most cases you shouldn't beat your kids, but I certainly understood what I had did wrong, why it was wrong, and what the consequence was (a good swift hand to my backside), the problem with physical punishment in almost every case is exactly as cheesecat says. Most people don't alert their kid as to why they're getting spanked, just that they did something bad. I've had a few things threatened, like having my mouth washed out with soap because I was mouthing off to my parents (lesson as I was told with the threat: You have a dirty mouth that doesn't show respect to those you should show respect for, and thus we're going clean your mouth in a way that doesn't taste good so you'll remember it). I always backed down until I grew large enough that I wasn't afraid of my parents physically but by that point we rarely go into disagreements. I've had the belt threatened but never used, I've been grounded, had video games taken away, sent to my room, or once my room became my sanctum, forced to spend time with aunts and uncles that I didn't like by going to family functions.

My parents were extremely even handed and I did get a way with a lot of gak, but I got caught just as often.

The thing is, In my experience, those that tend to beat children tend to not explain. Such as something I heard from a kid "My dad whooped me because I failed my test, he said I have to do better"
And most kids who do receive beatings tend to not always be mostly well adjusted.
Something I plan to do to as a dissertation is to see if beatings have anything to do with juvenile delinquency

This....

When I was a real young'un the beatin would happen, then the explaining... As I got older, it became simply, "you understand why you're about to get spanked?"

A long tube sock and a trip to the fresh fruit section of your local grocery store should be the best friends of parents with unruly children.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I don't follow.

"you better start behaving or dad's gonna get arrested for lewd conduct down at Whole Foods, the taunting of which you shall never live down"?

vague disclaimers are nobody's friend.

Kids these days..... they honestly have no idea what a tube sock is really for do they??? THAT'S what's wrong with our society today, where parents are failing the children, lol.

I don't know which is scarier - the fact that he didn't get the Full Metal reference, or that he thinks a parent needs to engage in "lewd conduct down at Whole Foods" because of an unruly child

Bathing in elitist French expats fumes

I'm glad read down the whole page. As a student teacher, I had parents tell me it was ok to beat their child in class... I almost responded before I read everything.

Although it is very behaviourist (and thus boo hiss in the current educational trends) I agree that a parcimonious spanking, when explained, teaches a child a lot about action/reaction. Beating without any explanation rarely leads to, as someone said, balanced adults later.
