I know we have an NFL thread, but I was curious what some of the Brits on the site feel about the NFL game coming up between the MN Vikings (0-3) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (0-3)? Is there any buzz over the pond?

This year the English Premier Soccer League is also being promoted heavily int he states. Which ddo you think will catch on first, the NFL in England or Soccer/Futbol in the U.S.?

Given that we already have a fairly significant professional soccer league, I'd say soccer in the US...But that makes me sad, because the other, and much better, significantly English game should be seen by more people here in the States. I am of course, talking about Rugby Union

Honestly no one thought that these teams were going to crap the bed the first three weeks of the season. The Steelers, even though they missed the playoffs this past season have been a dominant force in the NFL and AFC North, and the Vikings made it to the playoffs without a decent QB (thanks to AP), but Jesus, one of these teams lost to the Cleveland Browns... Sorry London!

I haven't heard a buzz but I don't follow NFL any more. There always has been a good reception for the NFL exhibition games at Wembley. I've been to a couple in the distant past.

You have to bear in mind that UK based fans don't have much chance to see any pro American football unless they make some kind of a pilgrimage for it, so even if these two teams are low in the league they will still look good to people over here.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

But at the same time, many of those UK based fans can see very similar, and often times more exciting (read, without 8 million breaks) action by going to The Stoop, or Sixways, or Twickenham and watching an Aviva Premiership match, or Internationals that are coming up.

Or The Oval, or Lords, if they want slower action with many more breaks (elevenses, lunch, tea) by watching cricket.

Lol, I would never consider anything that goes on in cricket to be "action" Though I suppose if I understood even half of what went on there, it may become a decent drinking sport, a la baseball.

It shouldn't even have to be called Union. It should just be Rugby. Screw that lame ass rugby league garbage that neuters half of the friggin game.

I used to be in Japan, and the flag was fixed to Japanese by Legoburner because it wouldn't auto-detect. I haven't bothered to change it since then.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Both games sold out really quickly, and that's despite the Jags-49'ers game looking like a done deal when the tickets went on sale. Think the game is definitely getting more popular here; 2 cable channels now showing, 1 terrestrial, and the best cable channel is even showing games on Sky Sports 2 (and even 1 occasionally) - bearing in mind at one time it was on Sky Sports 4, in amongst curling and handball. On average there are 2 live games on a Sunday (with interactive), Monday night and Thursday games all shown live. I read somewhere that viewing figures have also been going up year on year, it recently moved into 5th (possibly 6th) overtaking one of the pub 'sports' (either darts or snooker, can't remember which).

As a big NFL fan will be going to the game on Sunday, and I can't wait for it! At this point I'm hoping the Vikings will notch it up a gear, but as the Steelers haven't looked ground-breaking at least it might be a close game (hopefully closer than the Patriots-Rams games last year in any case!)

Lol, I would never consider anything that goes on in cricket to be "action" Though I suppose if I understood even half of what went on there, it may become a decent drinking sport, a la baseball.

Test match cricket (the long one!) is officially the best TV-hangover cure ever, although F1 is a close contender. Nothing better than having a sore head, sitting with a cup of tea and some forward defensive shots against a spin bowler at about 1 run every 3 overs

20-20 cricket and one day internationals can be tremendously exciting though.

20-20 cricket causes the hangovers that you need a test match to recover from!

As for the NFL games at Wembly, they always sell out super fast. True it's not as good as rugby but its a different spectacle and has cheer leaders. I know allot of rugby players that go, Martin Johnson is famous for being an avid NFL fan.

Most rugby players that watch it love the physicality of the nfl. The fact that this season we have 2 league games over here and both sold out very quickly shows how popular the game is over here.

Breaking News, the Vikes just changed Quarterbacks. Ponder is out and Matt Castle will be starting instead.

I guess losing to the Browns was too much

Edit: turns out Ponder has a broken rib...

As a Steelers fan, I'm torn about this. Ponder was more likely to throw up all over himself. Then again, we've seen the best from Cassell and know he stinks. So do you want to face the young guy more likely to melt down but with more upside, or the guy with the good, solid professional quality stink? I dunno.

The Steelers have mostly been putrid so far, but they might be starting to come around a little. The offense didn't look incompetent against the Bears...it was all the stinkin' turnovers that sunk them. If they can get that kind of effort and cut down on the TOs, they might be decent going forward. They likely aren't going to dig out of a 0-3 hole, but hopefully they start the climb back to respectability in London this weekend.

I was just discussing this with a co-worker yesterday! I hope that taking the games over-seas really takes off. I missed the chance for the Chelsea/Manchester game earlier in the year, and it was in my hometown! Tickets sold out in 20 minutes

2 games I love most in the world; motorbike racing, and NFL. Motorbikes because of the skill level involved, the capacity for personal over mechanical excellence, the danger/gladiatorial/emotional element of it (although I hate seeing riders injured, balancing on that knife edge between perfect control and throwing yourself into the scenery is surely something to be admired).

Like rugby as well, but despite the shape of the ball and the physical elements involved they are very different games. Love the strategic elements of NFL, that it has got ridiculous levels of depth if you are prepared to stick your head into it, but can also be enjoyed just for the basic element of seeing someone spinning through the air after running into a 400lb linebacker

Conscious of the flag on the left, will also say I think NFL is ten times the game of regular round-football soccer on various levels, but there we go..

Who supplies the cheerleaders? Steelers don't have any, though the Vikings do.

It's true you don't see many Pittsburgh women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Pittsburg men.

What a game! Thoroughly enjoyable day; fantastic show very professionally done, cracking game, food queues were not that horrific, lucky with the weather.

Got to see Peterson complete a running TD which I guess made the entry price worth by itself!

Did any other Dakka members get to the game?
