I went to my FLCE (Friendly Local Currency Exchange) and asked for some american currency for a day trip next week. Aside from the fact that he handed me c-bills, he also gave me two 1$ coins.

Are they in widespread use now? I got some in the past in commuter stations for the bus and such, but never like that...

What gives?

GO with it. Accept soda in the machines are $1.25-$1.75. I always had to ask specifically for $1 coins to add to my "ACH bank"

They seem to be more common, but still unusual. They are accepted everywhere, and even most vending machines today.

Not very common, but they'll get accepted. Vending Machines may or may not accept them, depends on the age of the machine.

I do wish dollar coins became more common.

Probably work

As everyone else has said, uncommon but still legal tender. Kind of like $2 bills.

A friend of mine always hits the bank to get a bunch out to take with him in costume to ren fairs.

I've worked somewhere where we were told to reject the dollar coins, but that's the only place I've ever heard of doing that.

We've had the 1$ and 2$ coins for a while now, but I always got snickers in Texas when I talked about them. It aggravated me to no end to think I had more money in my wallet only to count through a bunch of 1$ notes and go "huh, 14 dollars, eh?"

Ah well, it's only 2$, I'm more worried about the c-bills. They are hardly accepted anywhere in Montreal, I hope the gas station takes them.

1$ coins are primarily used for vending machine change for things which usually start with 20$ bills being used.

Near me, it is usually making bus/subway passes (a day pass in DC for metro is 9$, which means a 20$ bill will expense 1$ coints as change)

The other place I get them often is stamp vending machines, (which is something like 7$ish for a book of stamps, so again, a 10$ or 20$ bill needs change)

I would say you should have no problem spending them. You may get people at retail who are simply confused, but they are legal tender and there is no reason not to be accepted.

some "higher class" strip clubs have you use 2 dollar bills instead of ones. Odds are the person was affiliated with that industry.

Don't ask why I know this.

No, It was like we kept getting them for a bunch of different people. I tried to mark the bill to see if it would come back to us(Like we give it for change, they give it for paymeny for something else, they give the change etc.) to see if we kept just getting the same one. but my boss said no. I also got a 20$ bill with a love note written on it and a number.

Were the coins you got Sacagaweas? I used to get those at a job I worked at in the vending machines. I haven't seen them in a while, but I always liked them, they're good looking coins and have have a pleasing heft to them.

edit: Just realized you're Canadian, you have no idea what a Sacagawea is, any more than I can identify the denominations of.... seashells or beaver pelts or whatever it is you guys use for money in the frigid northern wasteland you call home. It looks like this:

Yeah that's when you go from "making it rain" to "making it hail".

They're a rarity, but technically legal tender, so no, you didn't get 'the shaft'. If someone gives you a 2000 yen bill, you got the shaft though. Same with five yen coins.

For whatever reason, metal scrap yards are another place where $2 bills are commonly used. They also pay with the $1 coins a lot as well.

The best use I've ever had for them (indeed, they seem made for
this) is at the laundromat. The one I regularly went to for years
fed them out at their change machines.

Yes, I got one of those, and a Lady Liberty one. I'm not that averse to using Google, I just like poking you guys.

I love it when Europeans come to my store, and throw a fit when trying to find the right coins. I even had one ask me why we just didn't use Euros and be done with it.

We don't have pennies anymore (used to be a pair of maple leaves)
Nickels have a beaver on them
Dimes have the Bluenose (a sailboat)
Quarters have a cariboo (not a moose)
Loonies have a loony (who'd've thunk)
And toonies have a polar bear, a group of penguins, a T-rex and a mad cow. Yup, all of them.

Where in the US are you going? $1 "Sacagawea" coins are incredibly common in the Bay Area of CA. Or they were 15 years ago...

It's just a day trip for my fiancee's birthday. We want to hit Plattsburgh and Burlington for the antiques. So, Hudson Valley & New England.

cue the "but then I got Cialis, and our antiquing just stopped" jokes.

Truth is, we can't go too far away, we need to manage our store, which we decided to close on mondays because she'd die of exhaustion otherwise. But come Tuesday morning, it's back in the saddle.
