Even Seth thinks that Family Guy probably should have stopped awhile ago, but as long as people keep watching it i.e. the money keeps coming in...
“Part of me thinks that Family Guy should have already ended. I think seven seasons is about the right lifespan for a TV series,” MacFarlane tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding, “I talk to the fans and in a way I'm kind of secretly hoping for them to say we're done with it. There are plenty of people who say the show is kind of over the hill … but still the vast majority go pale in the face when I mention the possibility.”

It would be good if they just let Family Guy die. Go peacefully, do not struggle like the Simpsons have been.
American Dad is much better. I'd like them just to concentrate on that. The format of the show lends itself to better episodes.
Isn't American Dad pretty much the same show as Family guy they both have an idiot dad, a loser son, a hot wife, a daughter who hates the dad and things that don't normally talk that do talk.

It's also the same as the Cleveland show... Honestly, I think Seth was just like, "let's see how much money I can print off of this..."
But then again, Family Guy and his other shows are basically using the same formula used by sitcoms for years.

The issue is that Family Guy has a very bland formula. Meg and Chris are almost non-existant as characters. Most of the drive in FG comes from the Seth voiced characters of Peter, Stewie, and Brian and occasionally Lois. American Dad's cast is more flushed out, more diverse as a group and less prone to random jumps/drops in the level of their stupidity/biases. The show is just more consistent and its formula more entertaining.
There's just more mileage in lampooning charactertures of American social/political stereotypes than there is in a cheap Simpson's knock off. If I had a say in the matter American Dad would be McFarlane's real master piece, not Family Guy.

When you get that generic you are also describing a bunch of different television shows. It is the specifics that make the difference, and the characterization and their interactions that make American Dad better; Francine is not Lois.

Haven't watched Family Guy in years. Just not interested anymore. I think I might have made it to season 5.....
Either way American Dad is pretty good but the cartoon I'm in love with right now is Bob's Burgers oddly. It just makes me laugh like a nut.

Bob' Burgers is surprisingly good, due to Bob (Archer!!) and his youngest daughter and their shenanigans. It has no right to be good..and it is!!
Also, Brian was the only part of family guy that I cared about. No longer have any reason to occasionally bother with it.

Well some people are saying it all took place in another dimension thingy. As he's mentioned to be in future episodes though.
I usually just watch for the Stewie and Brian stuff. The random stuff Peter gets into is getting a bit old.

Yeah, there's been no growth for FG since the 4th season. It was great watching it in college on Adult Swim...then it got old. Nothing changed. Change is great, except for killing off the most widely loved character on the show. Would the show have lasted a single season without Brian? (well, FOX tried to kill it, but it was saved. It wouldn't have been without Brian) No, it wouldn't have. If you got rid of Meg, Chris, Joe (love Patrick Warburton, but he's not the saving grace of the show), Quagmire, Cleveland...nobody would care. Peter is the main character, I know, but most people don't tune in to watch him. They want to see Stewie and Brian interact. The show is nothing without them. Seth has either got something big in his plans for the show with a return of Brian, or he planned to kill the show and felt killing the heart of it was the trick. The show won't last another season without Brian.

I kinda have an odd feeling it will be a multi parter. I really hope they bring him back. The show is boring without him. Good times to be had in the episode with Quagmires dad.

Family guy is going to go under after this. Brian was one of the better main characters of the show. His viewpoint was one of the unique things about family guy. I give the replacement dog about 5 episodes then he'll go.

*shrug* To me the show was dead years ago anyways. The first few seasons was fine and it should have ended off in its "glory days". Now it's being milked for all its worth till it's a desiccated husk which this shows given that they think they need to shake it up with a main character death.
Anything new to break out the mold of the bloody family formula would be nice. More stuff like Archer or Venture Bros type cartoon comedy would be a refreshing change of pace with how far they've already gone with Simpsons and its copy-cats. Once King of the Hill was done I thought its course had run its course.

Venture Bros is dead to me too with Brock gone. I went to watch the new season, all excited...no Brock. I had missed the stuff after he left. VB doesn't exist without him. Archer, well...the show would die without Archer. But I think that's a given.

Ugh I stopped watching the show not long after it came back on the air. It's just terrible. The show is like f*ckin 'mad libs'. It's like let's put batman singing on broadway while pimping robin out as a prostitute. Not only that but people cut away from the actual show so much with more flashbacks than an old war veteran would ever have. I mean at least old family guy was funny enough so that you didn't care as much. When they came back it was so terrible I'm surprised anybody even watches it. Did it magically get good for like an episode that I wasn't watching? Also referencing something from the 70's-80's (like a movie or show) scene by scene without any comedy is pretty much just plagiarism (since they're getting money for doing this sh*t). It's not clever or funny it's just sad and depressing.
Besides they had at least a 2 part episode or more about killing lois and it all ended up being a virtual simulation. Everything being a dream or similar to un-do everything is about the absolute worst way to end something. It's even worse than things just going back to normal with stewie's plot having failed and everybody not giving a sh*t.

This is why I think he's intentionally trying to torpedo it. On the other hand, he could just, you know, not renew. No one has a gun to his head season after season forcing him to renew.

I miss King of the Hill. The comedy in that show was remarkably sharp and subtle.
I stopped giving any kind of gak about Family Guy ages ago when it became utterly formulaic and it was obviously going through the motions.

except the difference is this: whilst familyguy is simply random, american dad has a point. its cutting edge, cerebral satire.
that said, South park is the bleeding edge of political satire. that show is simply genius. anytime i think there is a line, those guys push it out farther, with some truly brilliant episodes.
but family guy? it was the standard. a few years ago. when it was up against the establishment, it has an edge. then it became the establishment. much like the simpsons before it, it lost its edge and trundled on, nice and safe.
