I am seriously considering making a dwarf army with just the avatars of war models. Cheaper per unit (not by a ton) and so much better looking (in my opinion) I see no downside besides never being able to play in a games workshop or official tourney, which I don't anyway!

1.) GW will updated Dwarfs in February or March.
2.) The owner of AoW has been sculpting Dwarfs for GW several years ago.
3.) Downside: AoW has notorious delivery problems. Most boxes are OOP most of the time. If you find a retailer with stock, no problem. But buying direct can be a PITA. AoW is currently working through the fulfillment of an indiegogo campaign on Dwarfs, but rather slowly.

Actually the GW dwarfs do have the excuse of being old.

Seriously though Orock, Avatars of War are both better and cheaper, and that is not uncommon either.
As Silver said Mantic dwarves are pretty good too, and a hell of a lot cheaper (I actually have a command group for them with a general or two, a BSB and a Slayer charactrer that I just picked up to paint and I was pleasantly surprised by how great they are, I was expecting a lot less for a set that cost less than 2/3rds of a single GW finecast model).
Then there is Reaper for heroes, though their stuff is mostly for RPGs so you might find the scale a little off (since it isn't 'heroic scale' and all the arms and legs are actually in the right proportions compared to the body).

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

My explanation would be that you don't like good models

There's a difference between bad due to tech, and bad due to aesthetics. The current dwarfs don't look great because they are still being made with outdated molds. The centurion don't look great (to some, including me), because they were designed that way intentionally. That said, some may like the way they look. I will admit they don't look as dumb with the helmets on. GW were never any good with LoTR models. I think it's because of the scale.

I'd say the Centurions are mainly bad because the business department told the designers to have a "space marine in power armour in power armour" [a decision that could be made in 1985 or 2025]

Still, it's not as if they hadn't done it before... I dare say they've improved their style
