Lol nope.

The codex is effective, but "good" is kinda stretching it.

Space Wolves : Easy to paint to a good standard, good fluff and some of the best units in the game. That and they are rather fun to play!

Which will either be quite OP, or it'll flop as a sales point (by that point, quite a few players will be thinking "If my nids can't win for shiz, why even bother at this point?").

Not really. To each his own though. I can certainly win with it..

Oh, I don't dispute their win-power, I dispute how good the book is.

TN/AL/MS state line.

I voted Space Marines because they're usually a good starter army, and their codex doesn't really bend too many rules(Deldar ignore toughness values, Tyranids have no vehicles).

Note- I understand what the OP was going for, but I assumed voting for what you would normally recommend was the basis of this exercise.

If I voted another way I would not recommend sisters of battle seeing as how they don't really have many models, or a physical codex.

Black Bases and Grey Plastic Forever:My quaint little hobby blog.

40k- The Kumunga Swarm (more)
Count Mortimer’s Private Security Force/Excavation Team (building)
Kabal of the Grieving Widow (less)

Plus other games- miniature and cardboard both.

Grey Knights. They were broken last edition and for quite a bit in 6th. They were everywhere, now Tau has taken their place. So why not Tau?

I hate the aesthetics of both armies, but I hate Tau in a a lighthearted Chaos Dave way. (Amine is for noids... just kidding Duff. )
Even aside from the babby carrier, Grey Knights look like Centurions that a 5 year old decorated for Christmas.

I actually like Tau fluff. They're just as grimdark as everything else, once you realize how deluded they are about their place in the universe.
The fluff of GK is that they're supposed to be the fearless monster slayers of the 40k. Thanks to a certain someone, they are now girl slaughtering cowardly sociopaths who started worshiping Khorne (poorly and without martial honor) and are too inbred to realize it.

Tau gameplay is designed to excel with powerful and flexible shooting but be balanced with poor close combat. It fails because cc means little in this edition compared to shooting. When you face Tau you have a (unfair?) challenge ahead of you. You have to rethink your whole strategy and focus your tactics on selective targets, taking the army apart while closing the gap between you.
GK are designed to be an unbalanced cudgel against chaos armies. While Daemons took it hard from them for a while, they are now laughably bad at this. Want to beat Grey Knights? Play like Tau. Sit back and pepper their overpriced slow moving units with special weapons. Boring for you, frustrating for them

Still, I'd rather see a Tau gunline targeting me and knowing that I have a hard game ahead than see Draigowing and know I'm going to have a tedious one. They're a terrible army for a beginner as well; you can use them intelligently especially with allies, but most builds favor either straight cheese or non-synergized 'look at this kewl thing' builds.

Eh?

This is the reverse of the norm - people have to vote for what they don't reccommend. In the hope of getting an interesting trend going... (I don't even know what to look for in it, though).

I voted CSM.

I've played CSM for 13 years. It's my main army and the biggest one I own. That said, the last 2 codex have been junk. There is so much opportunity for the writers to give the legions some love, but sadly what we have pales in comparison to the representation the loyalist legions have seen.

Heldrakes keep CSM slightly competitive, but I would give it up in a second for a good set of legion specific rules.

If a new player asked me which army to choose, CSM would definitely NOT be it.

So apparently our hypothetical new player will be playing Dark Angels by a pretty substantial margin. Interesting.

At least it's not their little known successor chapter the dark angles. They're more known for their contributions to the field of mathematics anyway...
